VUVUZELAS

Is anyone else finding that annoying buzzing noise at the South African matches annoying? I'm not sure i can stand to listen to the vuvuzelas for several hours. Either they need to ban people taking them into the games or the sound engineers will have their work cut out because that constant buzzing sound is intensely irritating!

Are they those long trumpet things?

If so ds has one ,fil brought back from SA, i wondered wtf it was

Wordsonascreen · 11/06/2010 16:33

I have tinnitus

So its pretty normal for me.

But yes its fecking annoying.

And the word is too much like vulva/vagina I do a double take each time I see it.

Themasterandmargaritas · 11/06/2010 16:37

haha they won't ban them since most of them have come from Coca Cola, the official sponsor.

They are bloody loud when you are near them though.

nagoo · 11/06/2010 16:37

I clicked this link thinking I'd learn some new slang .

cryingfoul · 11/06/2010 16:39

time to switch to pepsi by way of protest then!

"South Africa 2010 might just possibly be the first World Cup that most armchair fans prefer to watch with the volume turned down."

I just found a newspaper article about them and this was the opening line! Couldn't have said it better myself!!

Ha! Just had a conversation about those in the office. Bloody awful racket.

strandedatsea · 11/06/2010 16:47

Oh my god I thought it was my tv! It's appalling.

strandedatsea · 11/06/2010 16:48

It sounds like a million wasps buzzing in my ear. Will this happen at every match?

DramaInPyjamas · 11/06/2010 16:49

I just quickly glanced at the topic/title and actually thought it was on the baby names thread!

cryingfoul · 11/06/2010 16:56

I've just been reading up on them. They seem to be pretty much disliked by everyone except the africans, but Fifa won't ban them as the tournament is supposed to be an African experience.
Vive la difference??

potplant · 11/06/2010 16:59

I only clicked this link to find out what the word meant.

Thought it was something mucky

wannaBe · 11/06/2010 17:05

why should they be banned? They are used across south Africa at all football matches, Fifa are quite right - if there's going to be a tournament in Africa then that's what you get.

Can you imagine if there were calls to ban football fans from cheering/chanting/singing/playing a drum/trumpet (as happens at many matches) because some other culture objected.

yabu.

ExitPursuedByABear · 11/06/2010 17:06

Agree - it does look like something slightly murky. Another good reason not to watch a single bit of World Cup coverage imo. Always a good time to go horseriding as the roads are quiet.

cryingfoul · 11/06/2010 17:07

murky?

MaisieBean · 11/06/2010 20:02

YANBU - they sound like a swarm of angry bees! My DH is a football nut so I think I am going to go insane by the end of the tournament!

notquitenormal · 11/06/2010 20:12

I imagine they are irritating if you're not used to them. Must put off the opposing team a bit too...an advantage for the african teams I suppose.

They are still a massive improvement from when I used to live next to a football ground and was treated to an hour and a half of 'shiiiit on the Villa! Shit on the Villa tonight!' every match.

BrigitteBardot · 11/06/2010 20:14

It's unbearable. I really want to watch the matches but this might ruin it for me.

hannahsaunt · 11/06/2010 20:14

I'm loving it Now we may not have to suffer just so many matches as dh and ds1 can't thole the buzzing.

SongBiird · 11/06/2010 20:14

YANBU to find the buzzing irritating it's driving my dh mad although tbh I'm not that bothered by it It just sounds like background noise.

YABU to want it banned. The S Africans love them and it's their world cup!

DorotheaPlenticlew · 11/06/2010 20:57

GOD it's annoying. I was interested in watching some matches, but not if the whole experience is about being buzzed by what sounds like a cloud of angry wasps.

DorotheaPlenticlew · 11/06/2010 20:58

Why do the S Africans love them, though? Don't they have ears?

Come on SA mumsnetters, justify yourselves.

CuppaTeaJanice · 11/06/2010 21:03

I'm with hannasaunt - I love the fact that something is irritating football supporters!!

I find them less annoying than the football itself.

serin · 11/06/2010 21:37

We watched with the volume down on the TV and the radio on in the background, they had managed to cut out some of the buzzing.

Whoamireally · 11/06/2010 21:39

I have just got back from tending to my bees and in fact, did look up from MN to make sure there wasn't a swarm in the garden.....having said that I did get DD1 one from Sainsburys as it's extremely entertaining watching a 3 year old try to play it!
