Yep it's right - BBC is all run on regional networks - some content is shared and some is region specific, but it's up to the regional network administration to determine programming.

Maisiethemorningsidecat · 10/06/2010 22:01

Yes, just interrupted DH's TV viewing, and it's on here in Scotland as well.

I can believe the Ofcom report. Perhaps why we have to suffer the dubious delights of River City.

Maisiethemorningsidecat · 10/06/2010 22:02

Yes, I see what you mean now re regional programming. I was referring to UK wide BBC programmes and their bias.

Crazycatlady · 10/06/2010 22:03

Oooh, have discovered I CAN watch River City afterall, have just found BBC Scotland is channel 990 something on my Sky Digital...

Off to search for Pobol y Cwm now and relive many a lazy afternoon in my student house in Cardiff.

Saltire · 10/06/2010 22:05

I blame James 6th for all this

Maisiethemorningsidecat · 10/06/2010 22:08

You know what? I'd do what the majority of Scots do and just give it a miss!

Agree - Jamie has a lot to answer for. Him and Alex Salmond.

mankyscotslass · 10/06/2010 22:09

I'm a Scot living in Manchester. I'm married to a Mancunian.

I would agree that Sectarianism is a bigger issue in Scotland than hating the English, but I do feel it's an issue.

I may have to move our family back to Scotland to care for my mother, and I worry about how my children would be treated by peers.

I will, however, be supporting England in the world cup, my DC would disown me if Idid not!!

Maisiethemorningsidecat · 10/06/2010 22:12

Manky - honestly, they will be fine. Do not believe everything you read in the papers. There are people everywhere who will use the colour of your skin and hair/class/religion/sexual orientation/country of origin/name of your gerbil as an excuse for bigoted remarks.

8Ace · 10/06/2010 22:12

Its got nothing to do with Braveheart is a lot longer and deeper than that. I was brought up in the 80's and a lot of the hatred was caused by Thatcher. Altho Mel Gibson did help stir it up. In fact the SNP used to stand outside the cinemas when Braveheart was on to spout their bullshit to impressional youths.

when friends of mine were in London trying to shift a squatter out of their sister's flat the police were called and they said to each other "who will we help the Jock or the Wog" the squatter was a black french guy. They decided to help the Jock because "at least they are white". Nice attitude from the metropolital police.

Or maybe they thought better than to mess with the "Jocks" as we're all hard as nails cos we eat porage for breakfast and dwell in caves.

All together now... land of the tartan granny great big tits and a hairy fanny...

Crazycatlady · 10/06/2010 22:13

Yes and Queen Anne...

On a slightly separate but connected point, I find it intriguing that we don't put up a GB team for the Olympics, but have 'team GB' for other sports. Apparently there were proposals for a UK/GB football team for the 2012 Olympics but the NI, Welsh and Scottish football associations declined to participate.

Saltire · 10/06/2010 22:14

They will be fine - we're not all bad. Just like I encountered a lot of racist abuse when I lived down on the south coast of England, but don't think all English people are racist towards the Scots. Likewise, the majority of Scots don't hate the Englsih, it's the media and the way they carry on that gets to us all all

Saltire · 10/06/2010 22:15

carzycatlady - probably because the chances are high that there would be no Scots, Welsh or NI players in the team. Maybe

Maisiethemorningsidecat · 10/06/2010 22:16

Crikey, I'm getting very confused - I thought we did have Team GB in the Olympics? There's a link to it here

Maisiethemorningsidecat · 10/06/2010 22:18

Agree Saltire. There may be a token non-English player - if we were very lucky.

Crazycatlady · 10/06/2010 22:18

You may well be right about that Saltire but the sad fact now is that it will certainly consist of only English players since the other nations have pulled out!

Maisiethemorningsidecat · 10/06/2010 22:20

That's because it's a team from England. If it were a UK team, there would be very little representation from the rest of the UK, so it would still be an English team!

Crazycatlady · 10/06/2010 22:24

The reason the NI, Welsh and Scottish football associations declined to participate was not to do with team selection criteria, instead it was over fears for their future independence and a concern that for all international matches in the future that four separate associations would be deemed unnecessary.

mankyscotslass · 10/06/2010 22:26

I meant to add, all my DC have been born in England, but eldest Manky has been told by his friends he is not English because I am Scottish, he is a bit confused.

He seems comfortable with his identity though.

Interestingly enough, DH, English through and through, feels I am more in touch with Scottish history and identity than he is with English.

He is still a rampant England supporter though!

Maisiethemorningsidecat · 10/06/2010 22:28

And they would be unnecessary why, do you think? Because it would become English dominated, perhaps?

Crazycatlady · 10/06/2010 22:31

Probably yes Maisie, since 85% of the population is English, unless the teams were deliberately more heavily weighted to reflect Scot/Welsh/NI then yes the team would probably end up being majority English.

Not great for inspiring pride and support from all the home nations, but a shame we can't put forward a proper team gb to the Olympics as a result, when it's being hosted on home turf and the only chance we've had in 40 years to put forward a team!

Maisiethemorningsidecat · 10/06/2010 22:33

Which is probably the reason for NOT wanting a GB football team - each country in the UK is very proud of their national team, winning or losing.

What do you mean a proper Team GB?

Crazycatlady · 10/06/2010 22:35

By proper Team GB, I mean a football team that represents all the home nations at the 2012 Olympics, rather than just England, which is what it will now be.

Agree with you that national pride around football probably means it's a non-starter. I still think it's a shame though.

Maisiethemorningsidecat · 10/06/2010 22:41

The rest of the sports are GB wide though - and hopefully we'll wipe the floor with the rest of the teams.

Crazycatlady · 10/06/2010 22:43

Yes it would be great if we can really do well at 2012, put on a good show and win lots of medals.

on that note, I think it's time to hit the hay, night night!

TiggyD · 10/06/2010 22:49

All the home nations are worried about the world football dudes telling us we can't have individual teams. We never enter the Olympic football competition because of it. As we're host we can't avoid it any more.
It also annoys the other footballing countries that the UK gets 4 votes on things.
