I have something that bothers me, in fact it really, really bothers me. I find myself getting angry when put in this situation.

When I pay for something and its something 99p and the person you are paying doesn't give me the penny and assumes it ok for them to keep my money. I've not had it happen in shops, but have at stalls, car boots, pizza delivery, and even a charity clthing website WTF is wrong with these people why do they think they can decide what I do with my money????

Last night we ordered a pizza and I paid, the only thing that stopped my mouth running away was the fact that I had already decided not to tip but the fact they can steal, yes steal it's not too strong a word, my money to my face I think is not on. I know it's only a penny, but it's my penny. I am a generous tipper normally.

So AIBU?

YANBU - the change is yours no matter how much it is. They are in effect stealing. Your DH is wrong.

Mingg · 07/06/2010 10:22

YANBU - it is your money

Fluffyone · 07/06/2010 10:23

I like to get my pennies, and they all go into charity collection boxes. Those pennies add up don't they?

said · 07/06/2010 10:24

YANBU in theory. But I do feel a tit when I catch myself realising I am waiting for my penny change. I will hoover up pennies in the house rather thann bother to bend over and pick them up.

DuelingFanjo · 07/06/2010 10:24

yanbu

iwasyoungonce · 07/06/2010 10:25

Tight arse.

BessieBoots · 07/06/2010 10:25

YANBU! This has never happened to me, I put all my coppers in a money box, and over a year it comes to a lot.

iwasyoungonce · 07/06/2010 10:25

Only joking! YANBU!

ABitBatty · 07/06/2010 10:26

LOL@hoovering up pennies rather than pick them up. I thought that was only me....

No-one has ever kept any of my pennies.

Plumm · 07/06/2010 10:27

YANBU - if they want to keep a whole pound they should charge a pound, not 99p.

FabIsGoingToGetFit · 07/06/2010 10:27

YANBU.

It is the principle.

If someone keeps your money it leaves a nasty taste, if you decide to tip them/let them keep the change then you feel happy about it.

DramaInPyjamas · 07/06/2010 10:31

YANBU. But I also feel a wee bit embarrassed waiting for a penny, so fumble about in my purse/bag looking busy.

Every penny helps!

PandaEis · 07/06/2010 10:39

YANBU

i have had this exact discussion with DH who never bothers to wait but i think that if everyone didnt bother to wait for the penny then at the end of the working day that particular shop may have made an extra £4 if they had 400 customers for example

the penny belongs to you and you could in theory, prosecute for the theft of your money. its yours regardless of the amount

i agree it does seem silly as it is only a penny but i look at it this way... if you had no milk left and only had 41p in your purse and the mik was 42p (thats how much it costs by me) alot of places wont let you off for the penny so you would have to go without its yours to wait for or do with as you wish, not the trader

Rejessta · 07/06/2010 10:54

What irritates me more is that they charge 99p in the first place. I know it is meant to look cheaper and make the deal more attractive somehow but surely we're all wise to the practise by now? It's one of a long list of marketing ploys that get up my nose because they inconvenience consumers to serve the ends of the retailer. The urge to market to us induces them to treat us like idiots, waste our time and annoy.

said · 07/06/2010 10:56

I thought the 99p thing was to reduce staff theft - ie have to key it into till to give change

ProfYaffle · 07/06/2010 11:01

YANBU - When given the odd penny change in a shop I tend to drop it into a charity box on the counter (if they have one) but it's still my penny to decide what to do with.

I agree though I don't get why so many prices end in .99, especially market stalls, car boot sales etc.

biddysmama · 07/06/2010 11:03

any brown pennys are stolen from my purse by small people for penny boxes, it does add up!

minipie · 07/06/2010 11:16

YANBU

I wait for the penny change, unless I'm in a hurry. It all adds up.

GetOrfMoiLand · 07/06/2010 11:20

I wouldn't wait for the penny. I wouldn;t think about it tbh.

debka · 07/06/2010 11:33

YANBU but can you imagine men ever having this discussion?

muggglewump · 07/06/2010 11:36

I always wait for the penny. I pick money up off the floor too, it all adds up.

BigFatSepticToe · 07/06/2010 11:41

yes, if you pay 99p and give them a £1, they should give you a 1p back

on occasions i have been offered a 2p instead if they are short on change, sometimes i take it sometimes i dont, sometimes i take it and give a 1p to settle up with them

if its a car booter, they should charge sensible prices, in multiples of 5p only and have a sufficient float of small change! or keep a pot of penny chews to hand out instead

but I dont get how the website did not give you change? surely that was not paid in cash??

what annoys me is adverts for something "under £500" when its £499.99, as if 1p makes a differnce

savoycabbage · 07/06/2010 11:45

In Australia we don't even have pennies. The smallest coin is 5 cents so they 'round' everything so if it comes to 43 cents you have to pay 45 but if it comes to 42 you pay 40. It's madness.

muggglewump · 07/06/2010 11:50

Do they still price things at, say, $2.99 in Australia?
It drove me mad when I lived there and I never did get it, well that and pretending it was hot all year round in Home And Away.

bunnygirl80 · 07/06/2010 11:57

mugglewump yes they do still price things at $2.99 etc here. I keep thinking I should start a spreadsheet to see if over the course of a year I end up in making a profit or a loss from the rounding up/down.....then I remember I actually have a life

op YANBU. I used to hate it when pizza delivery people didn't give me my 1p change
