I have something that bothers me, in fact it really, really bothers me. I find myself getting angry when put in this situation.

When I pay for something and its something 99p and the person you are paying doesn't give me the penny and assumes it ok for them to keep my money. I've not had it happen in shops, but have at stalls, car boots, pizza delivery, and even a charity clthing website WTF is wrong with these people why do they think they can decide what I do with my money????

Last night we ordered a pizza and I paid, the only thing that stopped my mouth running away was the fact that I had already decided not to tip but the fact they can steal, yes steal it's not too strong a word, my money to my face I think is not on. I know it's only a penny, but it's my penny. I am a generous tipper normally.

So AIBU?

YANBU. We keep all our loose change in a tin, and when it adds up we put it into our DS's savings. My nan has always done the same thing, and it does add up.

I agree that it does come across as a bit petty at times though. The trouble is, if you're in a position where literally every penny counts, and the other person isn't at all, I can kind of see how they might find it grasping. Until you've been there, often you don't get it.

MathsMadMummy · 07/06/2010 12:04

yanbu, as others said it's the principle of it. never happened to me I don't think.

we saved up all 1 and 2p, and some 5s, within a year we bought Wii Fit (£70)

estya · 07/06/2010 12:09

I've always thought its arrogant for people to drop some money and not bother to bend down and pick it up, because 'its only 5p' etc.
And this is the same sort of thing.
Its your money & may be a very small amount, but its rude for someone to disregard the value of your money.

muggglewump · 07/06/2010 12:11

I ask if they mind if I have it if they don't want it.
I have no shame!
I do what others do and save it in a jar.

toccatanfudge · 07/06/2010 12:12

YANBU

MathsMadMummy · 07/06/2010 12:32

I have no problem picking up pennies on the floor. although now DD does it for me

Cretaceous · 07/06/2010 12:38

YANBU! We went out for a pizza, the meal cost £45, we gave £60 and waited for £15 change... and waited... and waited... A tip would have been about £5. In the end, we had to ask for the change and the waiter looked really put out .

gagamama · 07/06/2010 12:39

YANBU, I usually stick 1p and 2p change into a charity box by the til, but I still want my change so I can decide where it goes! I don't want it lining some massive company's coffers, plus you're paying for the service of the cashier, which includes them giving you your change.

Fibilou · 07/06/2010 13:22

You should all educate yourselves on the law ! It is not actually stealing not to give change - from the Royal Mint

"Legal tender has a very narrow and technical meaning in the settlement of debts. It means that a debtor cannot successfully be sued for non-payment if he pays into court in legal tender. It does not mean that any ordinary transaction has to take place in legal tender or only within the amount denominated by the legislation. Both parties are free to agree to accept any form of payment whether legal tender or otherwise according to their wishes. In order to comply with the very strict rules governing an actual legal tender it is necessary, for example, actually to offer the exact amount due because no change can be demanded."

So technically the seller is not obliged to gve change.

Fibilou · 07/06/2010 13:23

And you would have difficulty satisfying the fairly narrow definition of theft anyway

Mingg · 07/06/2010 16:25

And they should have signs saying "exact change only"

ShowOfHands · 07/06/2010 16:32

OP, I am willing to set up a paypal fund and organise donations. I'll give you .0007 of a penny. Don't worry. We'll get you there. This penny is obviously important to you. Anybody else?

LoveBeing34 · 07/06/2010 16:44

MrsRandomRanter · 07/06/2010 17:24

The best way to avoid this problem is to actually pay 99p, or 49p.

toothgenie · 07/06/2010 18:34

YANBU

LoveBeing34 · 07/06/2010 18:43

They have a nice idea in the USA, called (I think) the 'Leave a penny, take a penny' tray. Because tax is added on at the till, the amount you pay can come up very odd sometimes. So if you need say 3 cents extra on top of a round dollar amount you can take 3 cents from a tray of change by the till. And people can also put their odd cents in there if they don't want to carry them around.
Can't see it working in the awful town I work in, people would just take the whole tray!
