I have just been diagnosed with acute tonsilitis. I feel like im dying.
I have brief moments where I get all panicky because im finding it very hard to swallow.
The little dangly hitng in my throat has swollen to about 4 times its normal size.

One good thing is I cant eat anything. So I maybe a couple of pounds lighter after my ordeal.

Ohhh its horrible You have my sympathies. I hope you feel better soon.

Jelly and angel whip were about all I could manage.

winnybella · 05/06/2010 13:43

Poor you. Tonsilitis is a fucking nightmare. Are you on ABs? You shuld see some inprovement in the next 24 hrs.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 05/06/2010 13:46

Im on some awful orange flavoured liquid AB. Two spoonfuls, four times a day

Ive had it once before when I was 15, the AB gave me thrush. Sooo hope that wont happen this time.

This is as good a time as any to lie on the sofa like a swooning victorian lady, and get people to wait on you hand and foot. (possibly get a little bell to ring) Hope you feel better soon.

AgentZigzag · 05/06/2010 14:38

I had it a couple of months ago, and it's fucking nasty.

I resolved never to take swallowing for granted again, which lasted about a day after I'd started to feel better

More than agree with Kurris advice

ShowOfHands · 05/06/2010 14:48

Oh how miserable. I'm sorry.

Acidopholus is a good idea when you're taking antibiotics, but if you can't swallow I'm not sure if it comes in any other for than tablets. I get upset stomachs and raging thrush with ABs.

Feel better soon.

nickelbabe · 05/06/2010 15:35

YADNBU.

wail away.

and eat lots of custard, that does it for me.

get as much liquid down you as you can, and lie down, wail and ask for things to be brought to you.

do yo uhave a poorly blanket? it's definitely the time to use it. wrap it round you and plonk yourself on the settee.

3littlefrogs · 05/06/2010 15:40

Ice lollies, crushed ice cubes, gargle with Oraldine mouthwash. No other mouthwash is as good for tonsillitis.

Cold yogurt, ice cream are much easier and less painful to swallow than liquids.

I have had tonsillitis many times and it is grim. I hope you feel better soon.

littlerach · 05/06/2010 15:45

Dd2 had tonsilitis 3 weeks ago and had the foul a/bs for 10 days.

2 days after finishing them, it cam eback and she has different ones for a week.

Poor little thing (she is 5) couldn't swallow or barely opne her mouth

She finds cold things as painful as warm foods.

It is the 4th time in a year for her.

nickelbabe · 05/06/2010 15:47

really, 3littlefrogs?

i can't take anything cold when i've got tonsils.
i have to have custard (because it tastes like ice-cream but warm) and warm drinks (not hot!) my mum always makes me drink honey and lemon because it's good for the infection.

but she does always try to make me gargle with TCP, which is disgusting and not to be recommended....

3littlefrogs · 05/06/2010 15:49

I found the numbing effect of the cold things soothing, but I can understand that that might not be the case for everyone.

Oraldine is really good for mouth and throat infections though.

sanielle · 05/06/2010 15:50

yabu you get to eat icecream all day long.. It's what you always dreamed of.. when you were five.

nickelbabe · 05/06/2010 15:56

i like the idea of oraldine, i'll look out for that the next time i'm infected.

i get lozenges called Merocaine - they really make your mouth numb! it's weird.

rastababi · 05/06/2010 15:57

YANBU, I've had it 3 times this year, it's horrid and excruciatingly painful I spent the first 3 days silently sobbing into my pillow (was too painful to wail )

Hope you feel better soon.

lazarusb · 05/06/2010 16:06

Definitely recommend merocaine and a good dose of abject misery...hope you feel better soon

kreecherlivesupstairs · 05/06/2010 16:10

YADNBU, tonsilitis is one of the most painful things I've ever had. DD suffers with hers and she just looks really miserable until the antibiotics kick in.
Can I lay and be wafty with you? I have a slipped disc and it is fucking agonising.

menetta · 06/06/2010 08:58

YADNBU.. Wouldn't advise the wailing thing though could be a bit too painful methinks .

The swooning lady idea is defo a good idea, as is the honey and lemon thing as you can drink hot and cold. If you can tolerate it icepops are good (especially as is so hot too).

Feel better soon

YANBU Poor you, it's the grimmest of grim. But YABU for wanting to wail, it will hurt.

Try gargling soluble paracetamol.

Best excuse ever for eating ice cream - it does something to your core temperature as well as getting some 'food' in which helps to manage the effects of the antib's

Feel better soon

BouncingTurtle · 06/06/2010 09:19

You poor thing!

Get some live yoghurt to help prevent the thrush and store it in the coldest part of your fridge.

Defintely stock up on the ice cream too!

AmazingBouncingFerret · 06/06/2010 09:24

Thanks all for your words of advice etc. I am unable to eat anything due to feeling very sick and am not able to keep much down, TMI but the pain when heaving with swollen tonsils is akin to childbirth but through the throat and not the fanjo.

I have been taking soluble paracetamol for the swelling.

I think the AB are working there is a definite improvement to the size of tonsils. Still feels like im swallowing razorblades though!

roomonthebroom · 06/06/2010 09:31

Oh poor you, hope the antibiotics are starting to work.

I usually get it a couple of times a year, although never had it as a child. The last time I had it FIL was coming to do work on our house and he is a retired GP so he insisted on looking at my throat with the back of a spoon to hold my tounge down and a torch. As he pressed my tounge down loads of foul pus shot into my mouth. Don't think he'll offer his services again

He did suggest 3 dispersible asprin- which were a struggle to get down- but which really did help with the pain. Although not if you're allergic to them obviously.

Hope you feel better soon.

Yanbu, but the wailing might hurt your throat! i sympathise because I had acute tonsilitus three years running once, it's horrendous.

Gargling with salt water gives some respite.

ZacharyQuack · 06/06/2010 11:25

Try gargling with soluble asprin, then swallow it (if you can).
