Hi

I have just watched DIY sos and a perfectly pleasant woman had the most awful tattoos. Why on earth to people do this to themselves.

I do think there is the ocassional taateful tattoo but it is the odd one. Andy while it might look great on a fit 22 year old body a tattoo of any kind will NEVER look great in your 50s.

OP posts:

(apart from that one)

PMSL

Painted ladies can be stunning, end of.

Lynli · 01/06/2010 15:38

I wanted to get a tattoo or even two tattoos.
I think they are quite nifty.
but the tattoo's beauty would be wasted as I am nearly 50.

Or tattoos' if I mean both of them.

feralgirl · 01/06/2010 15:54

"AIBU to point out that most women who like tattoos can't spell or use punctuation correctly?"

Yes you bastard well are Tametiger. I may have missed the OP's mis-spelling of "occasional" in my earlier post but I corrected all her other mistakes.

I have a first in English, I'm an English teacher and I'm lagged in tattoos.

So ner

rimmer08 · 01/06/2010 16:59

buzzy- oops thats a whole new thread right? in my defence i had it done 7 years ago when i was 22 my mum hates it almost as much as she hates my tattoo

tametiger · 01/06/2010 18:06

feralgirl - it was your bastard well failure to spot 'occasional' that prompted my post. I have a First in English, a PGCE, a CELTA AND am a daily newspaper sub-editor. And (although one should never start a sentence with a conjunction) I hate tattoos.
So, poo to you.

(Lifts skirt, drops knickers and flashes bum)

MNHubbie · 01/06/2010 19:28

Wow one word missed. YABU as your username doesn't have a capital letter at the start.

Gitchin · 01/06/2010 19:42

MNHubbie

Serious question. What does your DW think about you flirting on here? Just wondered.

MNHubbie · 01/06/2010 19:51

What flirting?

I have done nothing of the sort. This is just banter flirting is far, far more intense and wouldn't suit MN as I'd be run out of here with pitchforks and flaming torches by some of the mums who believe that sex should only happen once a year with the lights off and that no one should orgasm, ever.

But if I was to flirt she wouldn't give, if you will excuse the expression, a flying fuck as I am me and she is... um, she... her... whatever. Basically we are a partnership but two different people. How on Earth would it effect her if I flirt with someone? Similarly how would her doing it in any way harm me? We love each other, we have kids together and she knows I am hers in so many ways.

MNHubbie · 01/06/2010 19:58

Did you want to flirt Gitchin? I'm not sure you're my type as I prefer a more open mind ;)

BessieBoots · 01/06/2010 20:03

YANBU. I have loads of tattoos, and I am a minger.

MNHubbie · 01/06/2010 20:07

Because of the tattoos or in general?

Snobear4000 · 01/06/2010 20:10

OK I can't remember which tattoo thread is which today, but I decided to change my opinion and do a massive climbdown from my attacks on Gitchin.

The people with tattoos on MN have taken offence at people who think they are gross, ugly, "common" or what have you. So did I. It's a natural and fair reaction to being insulted.

However, as I was out today reflecting on the threads, I remembered why I got my first tatt, and subsequent "jobstoppers" on my forearms. For what it's worth I am a rocker, have always played music and work in the music business. "My people" are mostly in the artistic community (though not exclusively) and tend to be reasonably open minded, sexually liberated, and wary of authority especially government, big business and organised religion. That's just us lot. And there's millions of us. By getting inked up, I was saying to all the Daily Mail readers, Jesus freaks, homophobes, Express Readers, Fox News devotees, Conservative Party activists, monarchists, sexists, and all manner of old-fashioned, boring, judgemental traditionalists, I was saying to them from a distance, "I'm not one of you. We probably have little in common, so don't waste my time trying to engage me in chit-chat as it's unlikely we will be friends".

Half the reason I have the ink is to help keep these fussy old wowsers at arm's length.

So why should I have been offended by all the judgy-pants people here on MN? I am truly embarrassed that I allowed myself to be drawn into taking offence.

I welcome the criticism, the vitriol, and the assertions that myself and my foxy, intelligent wife (who has done such a marvellous job raising our DS and is a well-respected academic) are somehow "common" or chavvy.

Good on you all. I imagine had we not had our tattoos, we may well have met some of you knee-jerk conservatives and had our time wasted with boring conversations about Jesus, immigrants or the price of fuel.

It's fine that you don't like us, that you think we're ugly. We think you're ugly too, but on the inside, where it counts. Keep avoiding us, keep away from us. You're only doing us all a favour.

BessieBoots · 01/06/2010 20:12

No, my tattoos are great, it's just my face!

Funny, this tattoo business. I have a few, and I love them because it makes people think I'm the opposite of what I am. I love the look of shock. There is one that I got when I was 17, I would NEVER choose it now- But I love it, because it was a part of who I was then.

BessieBoots · 01/06/2010 20:16

But Snobear, not everyone is inked for those reasons. I have tattoos because I think they're nice and the things I have tattooed on my body are things I want to see every day.
I think your attitude is pretty cool, and welcome it, but I welcome most conversations- I dearly hope I don't keep certain people at arm's length because of my tattoos. I have no problem with authority. I just like pretty pictures

(God, I am such a bloody hippy...)

tametiger · 01/06/2010 20:21

Don't really give a monkey's about tattoos, just mooching about and wasting time on MN while housebound at the mo.
But,I have noticed that whenever men post on MN (you know who you are) they seem to get really worked up really quickly and start with the name-calling and sexist comments. Why's that?
I expect to get flamed here, but it's just an observation.

MNHubbie · 01/06/2010 20:32

Examples of sexism or insults please?

Here's a sexist comment:

tametiger · 01/06/2010 21:58

That's not sexist Snobear, as I said before, that's my observation. I suggest you reread some of your posts on this thread eg:

'Good on you all. I imagine had we not had our tattoos, we may well have met some of you knee-jerk conservatives and had our time wasted with boring conversations about Jesus, immigrants or the price of fuel'.
Insulting and OTT IMO.

MNHubbie:
'I'd be run out of here with pitchforks and flaming torches by some of the mums who believe that sex should only happen once a year with the lights off and that no one should orgasm, ever'.
Ditto.

harleyd · 02/06/2010 00:43

i dont think my tattoos have ever stopped someone approaching me, in fact its usually the opposite
people have stopped me in the street, in shops, in the pub before to comment on them. i get asked about them pretty much every day in life, by all sorts of people. i was standing waiting to cross the road recently when 2 very conservative looking ladies asked could they see the piece on my back properly
i love when that happens, and not in an attention seeking way, but because it shows that lots of people these days can appreciate art in the form of tattoos

Snobear4000 · 02/06/2010 10:27

I thought it quite fair. Tametiger. You just don't lie men. That's ok. We can't all like everyone.

Snobear4000 · 02/06/2010 10:28

"like men". Ok.
