To think that babies should not eat macdonalds?

pinkfizzle · 28/05/2010 23:12

Ok I went shopping and popped into MacDonalds on the way home for a drink and a filet of fish, while there I got out a high chair and fed my baby some solids (that I had bought with me).

Next table across I see a baby who at a guess looked about 8-9 months old in a high chair - and see that she is being fed french fries, lemonade and chicken nuggets?? I was very shocked at this - at one point I heard the parents say come on now, finish your lemonade as they fed it cup like to her?

.. and yes I have decided not to go anymore as I obviously am not setting my child a good example.

.. out of interest those of you who have children, what was the youngest age that your children had french fries??
.. is it common practice??

Worried I am going to get flamed on this thread, but neither of my dc have had a McDonalds. The food is full of salt & fat. My ds 7yrs even says 'eer yuk' when we go past the golden arches as we've described what goes into the food to him, (prob out of date nowadays as they have been forced to change their recipes).

However, I'm not saying they are never going to have one, just I am avoiding it at the moment.

Am shocked a baby was being fed lemonade/ fries etc...

I'm not precious about what they eat, I just think about what I give them, i.e homemade chips / granary bread / sweets without e numbers etc etc..

God I sound boring...

AmazingBouncingFerret · 29/05/2010 09:47

God I wish people would stop posting on here, it keeps coming up on active convos and it is making me want a nice McDonalds breakie!

MiladyDeWinterOfDiscontent · 29/05/2010 09:55

Rollmops I did ditch the mad CM and became a scrounger on income support. I had absolutely no idea that I was entitled to be with dd as a lone parent when she was a baby because I had a job.

I lost my house during that time but there you go, needs must etc

Rollmops · 29/05/2010 10:02

OnEdge, again, ever heard of reconstituted meat?
Also, there's much to be said for the 'science' of marketing and advertising by large conglomerates, it's an artform.

slushy06 · 29/05/2010 10:07

You wanna be grateful You don't have my MIL she asked whether I was buying jars for dd, I said no I make my own baby food.

MIL replied yeah I used to blend up sausage and beefburgers and chips for mine the hv said it was nice to see babies eating proper healthy homemade food . She wonders why I don't let her look after the babies .

I asked dp if she was joking he said no she does that when she is looking after SIL's babys.

Morloth · 29/05/2010 10:08

DS doesn't like Maccas the little freak, he whines and rolls his eyes if I want a cheeseburger and if we sit there for me to eat it, he might have a juice.

I should have introduced it sooner, I have always viewed Maccas as hangover food so didn't spend lot of time there when he was younger.

As for the OP, you don't know if it was a regular occurrence for this family, or a quick stop in a busy day etc. Only the lemonade would have raised my eyebrows.

Also, if you feed your kid too many carrots they go orange, I speak from experience as the mother of a carrot fiend.

sunshine2010 · 29/05/2010 10:10

I have mcdonalds 3 - 4 times a week in my work lunch break and I am 7 and half stone, no stretch marks or cellulite etc, completely flat tummy, and run regularly in my spare time. So personally I dont believe junk food to be as bad as it is made out as I have been eating like this for years. Its never done me any harm so I would give it to my child occasionally. My child is 3 and a half and has it now and again. She has never had fizzy drinks though.

wineismysaviour · 29/05/2010 10:17

Did anyone watch the Dawn Porter documentary when she ate nothing but mCdonalds for a week or so. The docs checked her before and after and the change in her general health was incredible.

I realise to eat it every meal time is a bit ridiculous experiment, but it did highlight how full of crap they are.

OnEdge · 29/05/2010 10:20

Rollmop

err......... what is the relevance of this?

"OnEdge, again, ever heard of reconstituted meat?

I just corrected you regarding the contents of chicken nuggets....

Don`t get your patronising response here, I would like to know the evidence on which you based your
"No, they are not, there's not a milligram of chicken breast meat in nuggets. Fact"

Fact?

wineismysaviour · 29/05/2010 10:20

Sunshine, that will catch up with you, I suspect you are young and your metabolic rate is fine at the moment, when you get on a bit it'll not be as easy. Eating that much processed food is never going to make a healthy body.

btw, your internal organs can be suffering from so much junk food, it doesn't always show on your waistline.

slushy06 · 29/05/2010 10:20

I know a friend who drank two cartons of orange juice a day because he thought it was healthy. Doctor told him he would die if he continued to drink this much oj.

sunshine2010 · 29/05/2010 10:22

wiseismysaviour - my dad is 59 he goes to kfc, mcdonalds or burger king most week days at work cause he doesnt like packed lunches and alays wants omething quick. He ran the London Marathon last year, the doctors say he is brilliant shape for his age as he runs so much. Thats why I have never worried about it. I dont think its that big a deal.

Rollmops · 29/05/2010 10:23

Edgy...., your naivete is astounding.
However, each their own, do carry on; Bon Appetit and all that.

OnEdge...

"yes.......... that is 50% of her RDA for salt........... and your point is what?

What is the problem here?

Oh the fat ??? Children require fat in their diet...............

soo please do judgeeducate me further"

So you are ok for a child to eat 50% of their rda in ONE meal? Really? Um ok you do realise you dont have to make sure they get 100% and more of their rda? Its a safe LIMIT not something to aim for. I personally, would be horrified to be giving my child half their rda in one meal when they have atleast 2 other meals to eat in that day aswell, but guess thats your child and your choice.

Also the whole, I eat mcdonalds x times a week crap dont really wash with me unless you can honestly say you know what the inside of your arteries and bowel lining look like You may look healthy but will most likely be a different story on the inside...

Rollmops...thats exactly what I said. How can processed shit be considered a treat?

MrsVidic, just because you can ask for them to not be showered in salt, doesnt mean they magically take out the huge amount of salt INSIDE them.

Why not make your own burgers and chips, its so easy yet so yummy.

slushy06 · 29/05/2010 10:33

here

Almost anything eaten in large amounts can be harmful which is why I don't mind my dc having the odd mcd.

LemonMelon · 29/05/2010 10:33

Also, we are talking about the rda for children aged 5 to 10. Those who are younger obviously have a lower rda and so makes it even worse imo

Shaz10 · 29/05/2010 10:34

Could you wash the salt off the fries with the lemonade?

Lambriniknickers · 29/05/2010 10:34

Morloth, my DD started to go orange when she was about 7 months. I had just presumed it was glow reflecting her red hair, but paed pointed it out at referral appointment.
Doc- Does she like carrots?
Me(proudly)- Yes. I make all my own baby food, carrots are her favourite.
Doc-Um, yes, well, her nose is starting to look a bit orange...

As for McD's - she has had a few fries once when her father and I were deeply hungover and were resorting to the last ditch cure. Neither of us could stand the screaming that would have occured if we'd said no. Personally I'm more ashamed of being that hungover in charge of a two year old than worrying about a few chips.

That said, she's never had pop, and I am pretty scrupulous about what meat I buy when not ruined by copious wine consumption .

Tidey · 29/05/2010 10:34

That is very young to be eating food like that, and I would probably have judged too. However, both of my DC have had McD's before, I don't see any problem with it as long as they don't eat it too often, like with any other food. If you saw someone else's child eating a slice of homemade cake, would you judge them? Probably just as bad if they ate it all the time, but okay once in a while.

slushy06 · 29/05/2010 10:39

'Also, we are talking about the rda for children aged 5 to 10. Those who are younger obviously have a lower rda and so makes it even worse imo '

If a younger child does unlikely finish the whole meal then yes a younger child would take in more than 50% but most would not finish it and therefor still take in roughly 50%.

slushy06 · 29/05/2010 10:48

Was also unaware that they had changed GDA to MDL (maximum daily limit). I thought it was okay to to eat within the GDA amount.

Aliarse · 29/05/2010 10:57

I think we live in a society awash with food and we have to teach our kids how to navigate through this and make sensible food choices.

So my four yesr old has had two McD's meals now that he is old enough to realise about healthy food and not so healthy food choices. They talk about it at nursery. Nothing is banned but he knows its not so healthy and he can only eat it on occasion.
He never asks to go to fast food places. I hope I can instill the basics before he has other stronger influences.

My two year old is another matter. Even when my oldest has only occasional unhealthy food choices, he has the same and he is mesmerised by the taste of it and wants it more and more. I will have a tougher job with him I think.

FWIW I look at an overall picture of what my children eat over a week and making adjustments over the next week to get healthier.

OnEdge · 29/05/2010 10:57

*Rollmops"

Naive regarding what exactly? I have corrected you and that is the best you can do? Your lack of factual evidence on which you base your argument and judgement astounds me. HOW patronising and condesending.

If I am naive, then I beleive YOU are paranoid.

LemonMelon · 29/05/2010 11:00

Yes within the limit, but if a child is eating 50% in one meal then I find it unlikely that they wont exceed the safe limit if taking into account other meals eaten that day

Nobody said they changed it so don't be sarcastic

Fact is, Mcdonalds is not good for you. I dont judge folk who want to put that in their children but don't try and pretend your not putting shit in your child
