To think that babies should not eat macdonalds?

Ok I went shopping and popped into MacDonalds on the way home for a drink and a filet of fish, while there I got out a high chair and fed my baby some solids (that I had bought with me).

Next table across I see a baby who at a guess looked about 8-9 months old in a high chair - and see that she is being fed french fries, lemonade and chicken nuggets?? I was very shocked at this - at one point I heard the parents say come on now, finish your lemonade as they fed it cup like to her?

.. and yes I have decided not to go anymore as I obviously am not setting my child a good example.

.. out of interest those of you who have children, what was the youngest age that your children had french fries??
.. is it common practice??

Thanks Scottish Mummy, I am obviously far too virtuous and should stop cooking for my baby, I should ofcourse buy more McDonalds and give up carrots entirely...

Im lovin it!

Oh and funny do McDs still put sugar on their buns to brown them quicker? I seem to remember that Diabetics could not have burgers because of the sugar??

My 3 have McD's sometimes as a treat. DD1 ate organic, didnt have any crap, not even a piece of her bloody birthday cake when she was 2! Then there were 2, then 3. I cant tell my 2 yr old "You cant have what your sisters can have until you are older" Ridiculous!
Think the lesson is to not make assumptions about others.

scottishmummy · 29/05/2010 00:15

Lord V au V. I got the sack partly because I was rather uncommitted, but mostly because I wanted to go on holiday, they didn't want me to, I said Fuck You, and they sacked me, the Cunts.

If I had been on more than 3.20 per hour then I might have taken them to an industrial tribunal..........

funnysinthegarden · 29/05/2010 00:18

PF, not sure about MD's bun, sugar policy these days. I got the sack when I was 16, am now 39......twas a loooooong time ago

toomuchmonthatendofthemoney · 29/05/2010 00:21

ds had his first chips just before he was 2, i think.

I was very careful with salt until he was 20 months or so, then he hit fussy stage and getting anything down him became a problem so occasional chips didn't seem too bad. He is now 4 and has chips approx once a week i'd say, if they are McD or chipper i ask for no salt, if oven chips at home no salt added obv. He LOVES them and sees it as a "weekend treat".

No fizzy drinks EVER tho. He has watered down apple juice with meals, water in between and milk first thing am and last thing pm. He thinks Coke is a grown up drink like wine or beer and was very shocked to see a girl of about 8 or 9 drinking a can in the street and asked me if she would have a really sore tummy now (loudly)

LordVolAuVent · 29/05/2010 00:21

The best thing about MacDonalds was when they had that Indian themed month, like they do, and had those adverts saying "korma long to MacDonalds" and "poppadom to MacDonalds" - I used to pmsl at those.

funnysinthegarden · 29/05/2010 00:38

loving the indian themed puns, BTW what is it about fizzy drinks? I have no objection to them, but DS1 simply won't have them. Much prefers water. What is so evil? I drink diet coke like it is going out of fashion

LemonMelon · 29/05/2010 00:51

lol at Mc'Donalds being considered a "treat"

pinkfizzle · 29/05/2010 00:55

Children who have lots of sugary drinks, such as fizzy drinks and squashes, are more likely to be overweight and to put on weight.

Anyhow I realise this was not a good thread for AIBU.

But I will try find out whether sugar is still in the buns.

I took my children in today, three year old daughter had milk, fish fingers and fries, 11 month old son had a go on one of the fish fingers. What is wrong with that? I think maybe there was salt on the fries, but we only go in there once or twice a month, and how often do you see kids eating crisps with more salt in, also some of the cheeses that is aimed at kids, like cheese strings are loaded with salt. The fish inside the fish fingers is fillet and there is loads of it so no harm done.

OnEdge · 29/05/2010 01:06

Wunt give them sugary drinks though, no need.

LemonMelon · 29/05/2010 01:20

maybe there was salt in the fries?seriously?

the fish fingers contain 0.8 grams of salt which is nearly 27% of the rda for children.
the chips (i assume it was a small portion)contain 0.4 grams of salt which is just over 13% of a childs rda.
Milk has 0.3 grams of salt, 10% of a childs rda.
Not to mention the 25g of fat they contain in total.

I dont feed my children crisps etc. Until they are old enough to go buy their own,I wont be paying for them to ruin their teeth and bowels

RobynLou · 29/05/2010 01:30

I'll get told off for this I'm sure, but I don't think it's ok for babies to be given mcdonalds, the amount of salt is shocking, and lemonade aswell? I find it amazing that someone would even consider giving a baby lemonade, rotting their teeth before they've even got them all!

pinkfizzle · 29/05/2010 01:34

Salt content of 140 grams for a small fries is what google is telling me??

OP posts:
LemonMelon · 29/05/2010 01:42

I used this to work out the salt content, worth having a look.

I think you've mistaken grams for mgs's fizzle but it is still alot of salt

Ben281 · 29/05/2010 01:43

pinkfizzle: you are completely right, it is totally unnacceptable to give babies mcdonalds food, but is completely in line with a culture where no one checks what is in the stuff they give to their kids. First of all it will not be 100% chicken and even if it is can you imagine what quality chicken that is for that price and how many antibiotics it will have been fed! Then you have the insane amount of salt already in all of the foods, not to mention the fat, the additives, the ethics of cutting down rainforests, etc, etc, etc.

LemonMelon · 29/05/2010 01:50

But by buying from McDonalds you are supporting them selling food that is not 100%chicken, and that the chicken when alive has had a crap life spent in a cage before having its throat cut and being pumped full of water. If parents choose to eat that and suppport that kind of thing then good for them I guess but don't feed it to your children who have no idea what is being put down their throat and the effects it has.

Fnd it hilarious that this site is full of people who have issues with their out of control kids yet will happily feed them sweets and shite like mcdonalds.

LemonMelon · 29/05/2010 01:52

Fnd Find

Tryharder · 29/05/2010 01:57

I have to admit that DS2 had eaten in both McDonalds and Pizza Hut before the age of 1 and I'm fairly sure had at least once tucked into Chinese takeaways and takeaway fish and chips as well. Luckily he has survived with all teeth intact.

I dunno really. McDonalds at every meal or frequently = clearly unacceptable. McDonalds as a one off treat = no biggie really. I doubt you will find many people who take their PFBs to McDonalds; most babies who consume junk food are only doing so because they are accompanying older siblings to said junk food emporium.

pinkfizzle · 29/05/2010 06:20

Thanks Lemon - I noticed when you google you find an awful lot of pro MacD sites.

Also the amount of advertising towards parents and kids is extensive.

My ds had his first (chip shop) chip at about 18 months. He tried it, spat it out and has refused them ever since.

Having said that, having got marooned with a broken down car, he has had a Greggs sausage roll before now and that's probably disgusting mechanically extracted meat puree. But in an emergency......

SilveryMoon · 29/05/2010 07:20

Ds2 had his first McD's meal when he was about 7 months.
Everything in moderation, won't do him too much harm, his diet the rest of the time is quite healthy so i am quite happy for my ds's to have McD's every now and again when we're out.
