To think that babies should not eat macdonalds?

Ok I went shopping and popped into MacDonalds on the way home for a drink and a filet of fish, while there I got out a high chair and fed my baby some solids (that I had bought with me).

Next table across I see a baby who at a guess looked about 8-9 months old in a high chair - and see that she is being fed french fries, lemonade and chicken nuggets?? I was very shocked at this - at one point I heard the parents say come on now, finish your lemonade as they fed it cup like to her?

.. and yes I have decided not to go anymore as I obviously am not setting my child a good example.

.. out of interest those of you who have children, what was the youngest age that your children had french fries??
.. is it common practice??

Nobody should eat McDee, the way the frankenstain burgers and nuggets etc. are made would make garbage disposal unit weep.
No, not rumors, sadly from the horses mouth.....
Had them as my client and was close to some of the head honchos. Much, that made moi retch, was mentioned rather matter-of-factly...

OrmRenewed · 29/05/2010 08:00

When mine were little they might gum the odd chip if we were eating something that involved chips. It was more as a pastime than nutrition. But I'd struggle to imagine any baby actually eating very much of a MacDonalds

Rollmops · 29/05/2010 08:12

"....Nuggets are 100% chicken breast and yes, the coating isn't that healthy but as a one off, wouldn't do much harm other than make the baby sick due to fat content etc..."
eeer....no....

Ever heard of reconstituted meat, i.e. meat slurry? There's a quite healthy helping of chemicals added as well of course.

jenniferturkington · 29/05/2010 08:28

Both mine have had a McDs twice- once at an airport in Brazil where it was the only option, and the next time after a very stressful hospital appointment where a bit of junk food was the least of our worries. They are nearly 3,and 16 months. Baby just had fries, 3 year old had nuggets too. Both had milk. We asked for no salt on the fries. They seem to have survived!

I once mentioned to my CM that I had spent the weekend making food for dd and freezing it in preparation for weaning when she was five months old ('twas the olden days) and she sniffed and told me that actually she prefers McDonalds fries and McFlurries

Mind you that was the same CM who took her to get her ears pierced after a brief conversation about earrings on babies during which I was so desperate to please her that I didn't mention that I thought it was wrong

Rollmops · 29/05/2010 08:37

Ditch the horrid CM pronto and run for the hills....

MrsVidic · 29/05/2010 08:47

newsflash- you can ask for your fries without salt- many people do- the staff will clean down all equipment and wait for some fresh ones to get made etc- lots of people do this.

You can get a fruit bag instead of chips or carrott sticks.

Anyway- there are many who use mcdonalds as a treat and some I'm sure who use it a lot- would you refuse to shop in tesco or waitrose if you saw a parent with child buying crap food?

Rollmops the nuggets are 100% chicken breast- and are probably far better quality than pubs and cafes serve.

I used to work there and ate it every day for a few years- I lost weight while I was there and have great blood pressure etc- I'm sure the occasional treat isn't that harmful

OnEdge · 29/05/2010 08:47

lemonmelon

"the fish fingers contain 0.8 grams of salt which is nearly 27% of the rda for children.
the chips (i assume it was a small portion)contain 0.4 grams of salt which is just over 13% of a childs rda.
Milk has 0.3 grams of salt, 10% of a childs rda.
Not to mention the 25g of fat they contain in total. "

yes.......... that is 50% of her RDA for salt........... and your point is what?

What is the problem here?

Oh the fat ??? Children require fat in their diet...............

soo please do judgeeducate me further

DD is 9months DS is 4 i have been there because it is the only eating place that is not a pub I don't like taking my children places where alcohol are served.

Ds has chicken nuggets and unsalted chips.

dd recently had her first and I bought her a fruit bag and gave her one of ds nugget.

This is a rare treat and I don't see the problem.

smokinaces · 29/05/2010 08:57

DS1 was about 8mo when he first had a happy meal - we were stuck the wrong side of the M25 bridge and a traffic accident meant we wouldnt get home for hours and he was hungry. I got him fishfingers, fruit bag, carrot sticks and water.

Even now DS1 is nearly 4 and DS2 is 2 and they share a portion of fries (which I take back if they are too salty and change) and a fruit bag. Dont get me wrong, I see nothing wrong with eating them every now and then but as a choice I try and steer them towards the healthiest option in there. DS1 is occasionally allowed a lemonade, but they mostly have water or still fanta.

I dont think an 8/9mo would eat a huge amount of the happy meal anyway - I cant imagine them eating a whole portion of fries or all 4 nuggets so even though the salt/fat is not ideal its not going to be as bad as it could be.

"...Rollmops the nuggets are 100% chicken breast- and are probably far better quality than pubs and cafes serve.

No, they are not, there's not a milligram of chicken breast meat in nuggets. Fact.

It truly baffles me when I hear that people eat fast food as a 'treat'; with so much fabulous food out there why of why choose overprocessed, salt and chemical ladden frankentstein grub?

Rollmops · 29/05/2010 09:09

frankenstein even....

misdee · 29/05/2010 09:12

if i have dd4 with me i go to macdonalds or pizza hut. because i know what items she can have without risk of anaphylatic reaction. do wipe down the highchairs as well because of risk of cross contimination.

btw she can have from mcdonalds, fries, fruit bags, chicken selects (but not nuggets), fishfingers (she doesnt like them), and water or fruitshoot.

misdee · 29/05/2010 09:13

pizza hut she can have the arabiatta pasta, wedges and garlic bread (no cheese)

OnEdge · 29/05/2010 09:14

Rollmops
Actually, they are made from chicken breast meat.

When we go to McDs, Burger King etc my ds voluntarily orders the fruit bag/water etc.

I would feel smug if my 2 dds weren't necking fries and coke!

(we do it mainly when on loooong trek to Grandparents)

KodakTheBat · 29/05/2010 09:30

DS1 didn't have McDonalds until he was about 2.5 and that would be fish fingers, fruit bag/carrot sticks and milk. Now he's four he'll have burger/chips/tropicana.

DS2 had his, I think, when he was about 1, fish fingers and carrots sticks, milk. Now he's 16mo he has chicken nuggets/chips/milk.

Probably 1 a month...when on a long journey usually.

Everything in moderation IMO. You don't know their situation, it could've been the first time and they didn't have a choice. Or they could go everyday, either way, none of your business really. YABU

and surely... what actual long term damage does having a McDonalds once in a while do? As long as children get a balanced diet 90% of the time, there's no harm in an occassional treat?!
