Ok we all know that family dont always buy us what we want but have been waiting for weeks for a present from a family member. They have just told me it will be at least another 2 months as its an ebook reader and hasnt been released yet, It has been put back. It was my birthday 2 weeks ago.

Anyway i think its like a computer thing that has books on it. From what i can gather they are not that small and i dont know about others that read books but i like the book part and think its crap to have it on a computer. To me its about looking at covers trying to figure out what i might like and then reading it in the bath, getting the pages all wet and creased.

Am i on my own or does anyone like these?? Genuine question i dont really know much about them??

Definitely don't take it in the bath

I think it would be very handy for holidays - packing 4 or more novels takes up so much room, but I'm not sure the price warrants it for that reason alone.

GoldenSnitch · 26/05/2010 22:45

It's never appealed to me. I hate reading long texts off a screen. Can cope with posts on here but not whole books.

Plus, real books don't run out of battery when you get to the good bit!

And it's not the end of the world if you drop them in the bath.

Plumm · 26/05/2010 22:46

I love books but would hate an e-reader. What will you fill your bookshelves with?

larks35 · 26/05/2010 22:52

My DP bought a Kindle for christmas. Now, I am a verocious book reader/lover. I always thought that I'd miss the page turning etc. But, I've loved my Kindle! Mainly because I've downloaded the complete works of Edith Wharton for $3.50 and complete Henry James for $6.99! Oh my goodness! what a bargain.

I will say that if you want the latest books you may struggle or may find they are no cheaper than their hard/paper backed counterparts, but if like me you love a good classic then you are in for a treat! It does take a little getting used to but I love my Kindle.

Lonnie · 26/05/2010 22:55

I have a Sony E reade rand OMG I LOVE it. I thought I would miss turning the pages but you get the same snuggly feeling when you pull the reader out of your bag and it fills very little I have it with me in my handbag all the time I wouldnt usually carry 36 books around with me but I doooo

I would love to be given a present like that i am so completely taken by mine I cant say 1 bad thing about it

larks35 · 26/05/2010 22:56

WRT taking it in the bath, just keep one hand dry (as you would with a normal book really). Also, the one I have doesn't have a backlit screen so reading off it ain't the same as reading off a computer screen.

Nyx · 26/05/2010 22:59

I don't have a kindle-y type thing but have been stunned at how much I enjoy reading books on my iPhone. I was like you, I loved actual books, however when I got the iphone I downloaded some classics and proceeded to get absolutely lost in them - same as I did with paper books. It has advantages, you can read in the dark - so when DH is watching a movie, for example, I don't have to have a light on to read my book. I think if you like reading, which you do, there is a big chance you will love your present. Bummer that you have to wait so long for it though!

hester · 26/05/2010 23:04

I would LOVE one of these. Lucky you!

Rockbird · 26/05/2010 23:06

I'll give you a fiver for it

shockers · 26/05/2010 23:19

The guy in Waterstones told me that they are fab. I am thinking of investing myself.... enjoy your present when it comes.

Amapoleon · 26/05/2010 23:25

i'll have it , if you don't want it, hahaha

secunda · 26/05/2010 23:30

I really like mine. You can download most classics free from Project Gutenburg, so if you download 20 it's the same cost as buying them as real books! I love how I can carry around 50 books so lightly. The screen is also very clever, so you can read in direct sunlight. Also the battery lasts a long time, something like 6000 page turns, and is easy to charge up on the computer like an Ipod.

I love mine (and do take it in the bath when dh isn't looking!).

Jux · 26/05/2010 23:48

Oh I thought exactly like you. Then my brother was given one and I wanted it. All those times you go on holiday but you can only take a few books because they take you over the baggage allowance, or they're just too heavy to lug around. All those long train journeys when you're nearly at the end of a book and so you have to take another with you for the return, but you don't know which one you'll be in the mood for so you've got to take 2 (or 3!). Oh I can think of hundreds of reasons why I want an e-reader now.

When my bro died, I thought I'd have his, but he'd broken the screen, and the cost of repair is almost as much as a whole new thing.

Oh I am so jealous.

trixymalixy · 26/05/2010 23:52

YABU, I really want one!

BitOfFun · 26/05/2010 23:55

So the Sony E-reader is better than the Kindle then, I gather?

I am very interested.

mummc2 · 27/05/2010 10:02

Thanks for all the replys i will remain optimistic then til i get it. I may just fall in love with it just like so many of you. Its an elonex ebook reader im waiting for and its been put back because they are trying to squueze more things on it like photos etc....

Jux · 28/05/2010 22:49

Ah now you seriously don't want one of those. I'll take it off yer hands for a reasonable amount, but I have overheads etc, y'know? Name me a price, and I'll consider it.

ChunkyMonkeysMum · 28/05/2010 22:59

I love my eReader!! I have the Sony Pocket eReader (PRS-300) in pink (). It's fab. I bought it for my holiday as I hate it when the sun melts the glue on the spine of a book making all the pages fall out. It was great as there is no glare from the sun, and the battery lasts ages (didn't need to charge it all week).

NetworkGuy · 29/05/2010 19:59

If you're serious about reading in the bath, and don't expect to use it when going away on holiday (or at least don't expect to need several books) then IMO it would make sense if you can to hint that because of the 'reading in the bath' aspect, is there a chance of something else ?

I know I've read engrossing (mostly Sci-Fi) books in a day or two, pretty much ignoring absolutely everything but the odd drink or meal, but do people really read several books while on holidays? Are these 'laze by the pool with a long cool drink and lots of suncream' hols where reading fills 10 hours a day?

sunshine2010 · 29/05/2010 20:02

I wouldnt want one of these either. I think it would hurt your eyes, and if I was carrying it around I would worry about dropping it or it getting smashed up in my bag. I would rather read a book any day. I think it would be a lot of money when you can get books so cheap from the charity shop or borrow from the library.

badgermonkey · 29/05/2010 20:04

I read books on my iPhone and love it. It doesn't replace normal Reading but it's so fab to know I've got 100+ books to read if I'm waiting for the train or something. We're going away for a month in summer and I can read a novel in an hour so I usually bring lots and lots of books on holiday with me and get through all of them (over 30 in two weeks last time! Thank goodness for hotels with bookcases). And You can get lots of stuff free - like the other day I was thinking about Great Expectations and I downloaded it free from Project Gutenberg 30 seconds later. So cool.

iloveasylumseekers · 29/05/2010 20:05

Pre-children, I used to take two books for every day we were away and I usually ran out. Even with children, I can usually get through 5 or 6 in a week. Something like this wold be fab, and I want one.

diddl · 29/05/2010 20:06

They are very expensive, aren´t they?

How much does it cost to download books onto them?

OP-why are they waiting for this particular one rather than getting one that is already available?
