...to find this absolutely disgusting?

Coming out of the supermarket today I was met with a common occurrence - a young mum, loading her MPV with shopping, kids inside, doors wide open, chuffing away on a fag!
I suppose I'm one of those detestable creatures, an ex-smoker, but I'm pretty sure I never did this!
Am I being a complete snob? Incredibly judgemental?

Vivian, as a considerate smoker like yourself, on your behalf. All she had to say was 'Actually if you don't mind not smoking...'

sherby · 26/05/2010 21:31

YABU

it was probably me

I'm shocked and saddened.

Another example of Broken Britain.

My Grandfather didn't fight the Germans so that this sort of thing could go on.

Winston Churchill will be spinning in his grave.

Oh FGS, the only place smokers can smoke now is outside & they still get grief for it!!

ValBollycella · 26/05/2010 21:55

herecomes, I do see your point, really I do.

If someone asked me, and I minded, I would say so. Surely you'd (you in the loosest sense of the word!) judge the situation? Woman asking you if you mind, in a nice tone of voice etc etc. Do you see what I mean? we're not talking about a sarcastic 'Oh you don't mind do you...?!' kinda thing...?

Why should you move Vivian?. You were outside!. If she didn't like it I'm sure she could have moved somewhere else indoors where she wouldn't be at risk of someone lighting up outside !!!

IMO, if you sit near an open window in a cafe/restaurant etc which has a back garden, you are always at risk of someone's smoke because it's the only place smokers can now go. If someone wants to make sure they are not at risk of this they should sit further inside.

oh, and I genuinely didn't mean to have a go at MPV owners - in fact, now we've got a 4th DC on the way, we'd rather like to have one ourselves, but can't afford it. Hope that's sorted that one out!

I dont like anyone smoking anywhere near my kids, inside or out. Surely if you can smell it you are breathing it in. In my ideal world there would be no smoking anywhere but as this is not the case, then I suppose that you have to accept that people who smoke need to do it somewhere and outside is better than right next to their kids indoors or inside the car.

Just13moreyearstogo · 26/05/2010 22:16

Poor woman. Can't you Just FEEL her desperation, both for a fag and for the moment's brief respite from the kids. Reserve your disgust for the tobacco companies.

confusedmummie · 26/05/2010 22:26

sorry to butt in but about the whole cancer and smoking, my nan has just had pancreatic cancer etc etc and she never touched a fag in her whole life!! you smoke you smoke! you dont then you dont get over it! life goes on....

HelenMNisTiredPatrolling · 26/05/2010 22:26

Herecomes, yeah, I see what you mean. But she asked...?

If you feel that strongly (and rightfully) about smoke around your kids

OnEdge · 26/05/2010 22:29

What is an MPV?

Dragonhart · 26/05/2010 22:39

Can I ask Vivian what you would have done or thought had she said she did mind? Genuine question not ment aggressively.

YUNBU - she could have at least passed the fag around the kids and if it were a little herbal, offered you a drag!
