Fruit shoots are evil............

posieparker · 25/05/2010 10:16

So I never buy the things, but yesterday all children were thirsty and I hadn't prepared by taking water. Anyway the shop I chose to go in ONLY had fruit shoots with a good lid thingy, no water, no juice, no milkshake....NO alternative.

Now my dcs didn't go crazy with the mythical sugar rush......but dc4 has just found one that he must have thrown under something and squeezed it all over my lounge carpet. EVIL EVIL THINGS!!!

DDs homework (she is 8) is to COLLECT fruit shoot bottles for some class experiment or other!!

I didn't know whether to or or

she wont be taking any in as we dont buy them

does that mean a black mark in the homework record book?

posieparker · 25/05/2010 11:04

Rather specific!!

They are the sweetest substance every created - lord knows what they use to meet their low sugar claim!

Diluted fruit juice in this house with the odd Capri Sun for a treat when we are out (strangely, apparently they are higher in sugar but to my taste, don't seem as sweet)

honeydragon · 25/05/2010 11:28

UANBU

I do not believe for one moment they quench thirst - know that sounds stupid as they are liquid - but does anyone else notice that they will GUZZLE (no other word for it) one down and then 10 minutes later they are thirsty again.

My ds has lovely manners but I cannot stand to be in his vicinity if he is drinking fruit shoot (they slurp more than water as they drink them faster), so we only really get them very occasionally as a treat after school for on the way home ( he sometimes wants one instead of ice cream).

My dh sometimes comes home with them as well when they are on special offer at the wholesaler - despite being told not too and I sulk and strop for at least a week, ds only drinks them as they are there and then 10 minutes later wants another one!!!! Or asks for a glass of water because he is thirsty. Hate them!

posieparker · 25/05/2010 11:28

They had Capri sun, but my youngest is eighteen months and so I thought it would go all over him.....I thought the sports cap was a good idea....

I took DS to a cafe last year assuming that they would sell fruit juice that I could dilute with water (will not touch plain water or milk) but they only had the dreaded Fruit Shoots. I relented and bought one for DS. Never again. He was leaning over his highchair and grabbing me by my jacket lapels and he tried to headbutt me, I shit you not.

Never

toccatanfudge · 25/05/2010 11:29

honeydragon - my DS's guzzle anything down and are thirsty again 10 minutes later

OrmRenewed · 25/05/2010 11:30

I quite agree. If you read the contents list on the label of the strawberry one backwards whilst listening to Black Sabbath the devil will appear. Honest!

cupcakesandbunting · 25/05/2010 11:32

Mindy, they contain aspartame which is sweeter than sugar.

campocaro · 25/05/2010 11:38

DD was given one at a party. We kept the bottle and put diluted juice/water in from then on. Everybody happy.

lovechoc · 25/05/2010 11:39

DS has only had one when at a friend's house because her children all drink them. I don't buy them for DS but he has had them v rarely in restaurants when there's been no alternative.

not a great fan of them either OP.

toccatanfudge · 25/05/2010 11:40

the normal fruit shoots don't contain aspartame do they? Thought it was only the "low sugar" ones that did (as with just about every other "no added sugar" product on the market

cupcakesandbunting · 25/05/2010 11:40

Don't want to sound all MNetty preachy but campocaro, please don't re-use those bottles

posieparker · 25/05/2010 11:41

I am going to keep the bottles, as my dss lose their proper ones all of the time. My dcs looked at me as if I'd given them £20 when i handed them out!!

TBH, they don't have them and I make no judgements, honest guv, about people that give them to their dcs....

I am super pissed off about my carpet!

Ah, I've only checked the back of the no sugar one I gave to DS and it had aspartame in (shoot me now) I kind of assumed that the normal ones did too since they claim to be low in sugar they have to make them uber-sweet somehow...

Morloth · 25/05/2010 11:50

Haha DS asked for a fruitshoot the other day from a vending machine (which was really cool by the way - we ended up buying another bottle just to watch it go ).

He had it, there was no fallout, it tasted like bubblegum - but because of Bloody Mumsnet I had to read the ingredient guide and.....it wasn't that bad, the aspartame is obviously a bad idea but given that he doesn't get anything else like that I figured it wasn't going to kill him.

Everything in moderation.

toccatanfudge · 25/05/2010 11:50

normal fruit shoot ingredients (still full of crap - but I don't see it on that list?)

I think they're so sweet because of the Glucose-Fructose Syrup and Sugar on the list LOL

cupcakesandbunting · 25/05/2010 11:52

OK I stand corrected.

WillowM2B · 25/05/2010 11:59

What are vintamins?

stressheaderic · 25/05/2010 12:00

Why shouldn't you re-use the bottles?

My nieces don't really notice what's in them (usually very weak fruit juice), they just like the sports cap style bottle, perfect size for little hands.

mumto2andnomore · 25/05/2010 12:05

Did you see that Jo Frost programme where she gave half the group of children a sugary tea and half a healthy tea but even the mums of the healthy group said their children behaved badly afterwards ? Just wondering if children really are affected by these-or just that some parents expect it.Mine never have been.

Saying that I hate fruit shoots, they are so sweet, yuk.

wonka · 25/05/2010 12:08

I cant see the problem with washing them out well and reusing them either?

posieparker · 25/05/2010 12:16

I watched some body myth program where it dispelled the myth of 'sugar rush' in children. The human body is well equipped to take the hit!
