Its dull, ridiculous waste of time and money, brings out the worst in people (though these England Tops Banned rumours are hilarious), we always make idiots of ourselves when supporting abroad... And generally I am sick of seeing prissy men who whine and throw themselves on the floor when they find a split end plastered everywhere and being hailed as hero's when all they do is kick a ball around a field.

As a family we are pretty sporty, we are looking forward to it. We also love Wimbledon, which we go to regularly, and cricket, so whoever says it's a style thing hasn't met my family. I don't think it's been rammed down my throat in the slightest. It's great fun, And whether you like it or not football is our national sport.

This is all just warming up for the Olympics, which quite rightly will be 'rammed down our throats'. Better get used to it! Can't wait.

re. the salaries, the players are donating all their world cup match fees to charity:

Urgh, YADNBU. Can't stand it, and really don't find it exciting. But I have never liked football, rugby yes, football no. And it isn't a class thing...which is a bizarre statement to make just because someone likes one thing over another...

Luckily neither DH nor any of our friends are into it either so it will be easy to escape for me.

thumbwitch · 24/05/2010 08:48

YANBU - even though I'm the other side of the world I still have to put up with it because DH lurrrrves football. Thankfully he is pretty unpartisan about it generally (although will of course be supporting Australia for the short time they are in it ) but in some ways that's worse - means he wants to watch EVERY match

I believe MRsR's attempt to turn this into another class war thing is down to the fact that rugby was mostly played at boys' public schools, and football was played by the town oiks. However, this factoid is a couple of centuries out of date really.

They were giving out free stickers in the local Morrisons and my girls said "Sorry, we don't like football"
The lady looked at them as if they were mad
I just hope that all these fans notice how much money is being spent on football and notice how much poverty is going on right next door
I've been to Cape Town and you can't escape the fact that there a more slum dwellers than people in proper housing
Oh yeah and Cape town beaches...watch out for the people who want to 'mind' your car and the sea is colder than the UK's

Saggyoldclothcatpuss · 24/05/2010 09:37

I object to anyone being paid 150k a week! It is ridiculous!

Rollmops · 24/05/2010 09:40

What football? Where?
Aaaah, the blessed living in the countryside, no football or hooligan in sight....
Long may it continue.

Exactly- plus when Wayne gets paid £150k a week he pays about £75k of that in tax which pays for the heart surgeon, nurses, teachers, firemen etc.

It's not as though if the people who fund football weren't indirectly paying footballers' wages they'd give it all to charity or something.

LordPanofthePeaks · 24/05/2010 10:52

is there a football match coming up??

mrsruffallo · 24/05/2010 11:25

Def a class issue

Kaloki · 24/05/2010 12:32

I hate football, brought up in a house of football fans, it's nice that I don't have to listen to the shouts when people score.

It really does bore me.

Why is it a class issue mrsruffalo?

Also - further to my post last night - We (England) cannot even get a proper top squad together for major tournaments. Bloody lucky to be in the world Cup this year, judging by past performance. Add in the injuries galore plus shite morale etc... (cos none of the damn players can keep their cocks in their shorts) and we are doomed from the start.

I hope I am wrong and we actually DO make it to the final, or at least near the final stages (bloody very very big and brave of me considering my due date is World Cup Final Day - yay me for timing) BUT I am fed up and embarrassed by all the t-shirts being sold with 1966 on.

If the players played for glory and actual 100% love of the sport rather than money and fast cars and fast women maybe England would emanate the "glory" of 1966...

!!!

MrsC2010 · 24/05/2010 14:02

Can you imagine if it was the other way around? Rugby lovers looking down on football lovers and declaring their love of it to be a 'class issue'. That wouldn't be popular!

But this isn't a rugby vs football debate. Just an 'I hate football' one.

I think Mrs Ruffalo's point is that most people who are critical of football are middle class and what they dont like about it is all the bling/ nouveau richeness/shagging glamour models and the shouting/ chanting/ general rowdiness/occasional violence of the crowd. It's seen as all a bit uncouth.

i.e. not liking football is actually a middle class reaction to working class culture

WillowM2B · 24/05/2010 14:52

Ahhh, that could be it TheBride

Wonder why everything has to be a class/race/age/gender etc... (delete as applicable) issue these days

Why can I not just find something plainly and simply fucking irritating for no other reason than its plainly and simply fucking irritating

mangoandlime · 24/05/2010 15:05

WillowM2B , In all fairness, the majority of players actually DO play for the love of the game. They have worked hard to get where they are..they are extremely, extremely talented players. For most the money is a nice bonus, (very nice!) After all, you can't choose to be a top footballer...and it isn't a job for life: Make hay while the sun shines...

I wonder if people think the current team is crap because we have such high expectations of them?

As for keeping their cocks in their trousers...there has been a spate recently, agreed..Not only football though...Tiger?

mayorquimby · 24/05/2010 15:18

"International and Premiership footballers are an absolute disgrace. Give me the Sunday football league down the park any day. Proper football goes on there, no vacuous players mincing about having tantrums left, right and centre."

Nope just 20 stone 35 year olds who think screaming to show how passionate you are, startig fights and trying to break 20 year olds legs makes you an identikit of John Terry and a good player.
I can't wait till the first kick off. I can't wait for the world cup going to make my summer.
4 years is too long to wait and I'm already far too excited about this year.
Footballers are no better or worse than any other competitive athletes, anyone who says differently either doesn't watch football and gets their opinions from the tabloids or doesn't watch other sports.

Saggyoldclothcatpuss · 24/05/2010 21:25

Where I live I am most definitely considered one of the lower classes! And before we go any further I just want to say I hate rugby as well! Anyway, I totally agree with willow, it has nothing to do with class, I just fucking hate football!

MNHubbie · 24/05/2010 22:18

Explain exactly how it is a class issue? My parents and siblings are all fans and it is fair to say we're of the same class.

I don't get how liking sport is a class matter especially since those disliking it are talking about it being everywhere. I'm trying to give the benefit of the doubt to you but in one post you attack women who don't like sport as cliche but give no further details of why that would be so nor give no consideration to how utterly sexist such a comment is. Then you ignore my question about whether it is ok for me as a man to dislike football. Then you make blanket statements about it being a class issue without giving any further information or reasoning to your argument. Such behaviours seem to add up to one conclusion. Please allaborate more or we'll be forced to draw our own conclusions on your behaviour which is seeming quite trollish (sorry if you are not).

thumbwitch · 25/05/2010 00:25

MrsR is fond of pushing the '-ist' buttons, I seem to remember. Classist is just another one. I doubt she has any rational arguments for it, just likes to wind others up - therefore 'troll' would be an apt description here.

SirBoobAlot · 25/05/2010 10:02

I'm not classist - anyone who actually knows me (on here or in RL) would know that quite blindingly. I just hate football!
