To be fed up of the bloody football already?

Its dull, ridiculous waste of time and money, brings out the worst in people (though these England Tops Banned rumours are hilarious), we always make idiots of ourselves when supporting abroad... And generally I am sick of seeing prissy men who whine and throw themselves on the floor when they find a split end plastered everywhere and being hailed as hero's when all they do is kick a ball around a field.

Yes, it irritates me that they earn a lot of money for doing something to stupid - when people who are savings lives, and risking their own, earn nothing in comparison. That's not a "class" thing - that's a common sense and desire for fairness thing.

SirBoobAlot · 23/05/2010 23:00
  • so stupid, even.

sungirltan · 23/05/2010 23:00

no i mean why the likes of me take such issue with the ghastly football shirts. euw

Saggyoldclothcatpuss · 23/05/2010 23:00

AHEM! It is a few grossly overpaid men chasing a ball about!

mrsruffallo · 23/05/2010 23:01

Do you avoid over bonused bankers then?
Do you snarl when you pass adverts for banks?

Saggyoldclothcatpuss · 23/05/2010 23:03

Yes!

SirBoobAlot · 23/05/2010 23:03

... Well, yes, actually, I do.

I'd probably snarl more if they were throwing themselves around so that they got to play with the ball a bit more, too.

OP posts:
MNHubbie · 23/05/2010 23:14

Ok MrsRuffallo is it OK for me to say that the OP INBU then? Is it ok for a man to say he is sick of football because it is just a bloody game and I don't want to have a pathetic waste of time being on every newspaper cover, newsagent window, etc etc. Is it OK as a man to say I just do not give a shit about a bunch of men prancing about on a field? Am I all right to be annoyed about not being able to avoid a stupid game everywhere I go?

OP YANBU people are free to watch football if they want but we should be able to leave them to it and not have it rammed down our throats.

And on a related point how come all this fanaticism doesn't get labelled as being even geekier than the stuff usually labelled as being geeky? At least most geek stuff is thought provoking and requires a degree of intellectual processing. All this mind numbing recall of footballers' names and so forth is just rather... well fill in the gaps yourself.

yondan · 23/05/2010 23:14

SirBoobAlot

I'm guessing you were no good at sports at school. Am I correct?

SirBoobAlot · 23/05/2010 23:18

You're very wrong. And, in reference to your thread, I had counselling. Next assumption?

OP posts:
WhereYouLeftIt · 23/05/2010 23:28

YANBU. It is inescapable. I will probably watch the football, but could do without the surrounding tripe, especially the commercial tie-ins. Did I really need to learn that John Barnes has grown a pot-belly through reprising his World Cup song in an advert for Mars Bars FGS?

Saggyoldclothcatpuss · 23/05/2010 23:39

My dd is even being made to take part in a world cup related project at school. Surely this is taking it a bit far?

SirBoobAlot · 23/05/2010 23:59

Saggy - not the first time I've heard it I could understand if the school were using it as an excuse to educate about different parts of the world, but from what I've seen its not.

MNHubbie - you and my DP might get on fantastically well

OP posts:
Saggyoldclothcatpuss · 24/05/2010 00:08

GRRRRR Bloody Football! I heard today, that some of the players get 150k a week! this can't be true surely?

SirBoobAlot · 24/05/2010 00:12

Sickeningly, I think it is According to Answers.com, Rooney and similar are "likely to earn in excess of 100 grand a week". Disgusting, really, when you think about it...

Hey, I think I've just found the solution to the deficit!

OP posts:
Saggyoldclothcatpuss · 24/05/2010 00:14

JEESUSS! The money that gets wasted....

SirBoobAlot · 24/05/2010 00:16

Its crazy, isn't it?

OP posts:
Oblomov · 24/05/2010 00:23

Its everywhere ?
Really, we were having a discussion last night about how the atmosphere is quite subdued and its isn't that bigger-deal , compared to previous world cups.
It hasn't be as hyped as it was for the last few world cups.

Rammed down our throats ?
you could say the same about loads of things. general elections for e.g.

when other world events or other sporting events are everywhere, doesn't bother me.

SirBoobAlot · 24/05/2010 00:29

Lucky you, Kerry

Oblomov - maybe we are in different areas, it really is everywhere here. Agree the election was also the same with its publication, but the difference there being is that the election actually will have had an effect on people's lives for the next four years.

OP posts:
Saggyoldclothcatpuss · 24/05/2010 00:34

Still going in here then?
I am sorry, but it doesn't matter what anyone says. I hate football, and am fed up of the world cup already, although unlike Kerry, I will be sitting in the lounge trying to find something non football to watch on the big telly, whilst everyone else watches football upstairs on the portable!

Oblomov · 24/05/2010 00:37

you may not be interested in the general election. you may think that life will tick along pretty much as before. you may not be interested in wimbeldon and be fed up of hearing about henman etc.
you may not be interested in snow affecting travel, or volcano's affecting flights, or tsunami's etc etc .
but to object to it being shoved down your throat ??

TheBride · 24/05/2010 01:03

Football players are grossly overpaid but it's a private enterprise that pays them so it's not as though they are wasting "your" money. The clubs get their money from

  1. Russian oligarchs/ Arab oil barons etc- you shd be happy about this as basically foreigners are giving UK residents money which they then spend/ pay 50% tax on. Think of it as a kind of export.
  2. Gates
  3. Sponsorship
  4. TV fees

I like the World cup itself, esp if there's penalties (I quite like any international sport- I'm not that interested in football per se) but agree that the build up and ubiquitous "tie ins" are overkill and a PITA.
