Just a moan really

Went work in a summer skirt yesterday for the 1st time in i dont know how long, i had 'jokey' comments all day that i shouldn't get my legs out as i look too pasty, i was even asked if i was allergic to the sun and if i was a vampire . I dont tan at all, cant be arsed with faking it and its my natural skin colour.
A bit pathetic i know but it was bugging me.

OP posts:
Longtalljosie · 21/05/2010 06:58

Yes it bugs me too

ramblingmum · 21/05/2010 07:00

Just to say my legs are the same and you have made me thing it is time to get them out for the summer. Just need to find my razor.

Longtalljosie · 21/05/2010 07:12

And moisturiser. I've found that pasty pale and interesting legs look one heck of a lot better if they're slightly shiny!

BouncingTurtle · 21/05/2010 07:18

Yes I agree totally!

Sadly I inherited my mother's very fair Irish complexion, unlike my DTBs who inherited my dad's Spanish complexion. So where they go brow n as soon as the sun comes out, I generally go lobster red unless I use plenty of sun cream!
So why should I sweat in long sleeved tops and trousers just so I don't offend people with my pasty lily white skin

Perhaps we should flounce around in leghorn hats and pretend we are delicate southern belles

StealthPolarBear · 21/05/2010 07:21

not only am i pale but freckly too, go pink then red in the sun

I think the implication, OP, is that you shuold have had fake tan on! i hate the stuff

ifancyashandy · 21/05/2010 07:23

Channel Nicola Whatsherface off of Girls Aloud (minus the weird hair and make up combo). She looks way better now she's stopped fakin' it.

Tee2072 · 21/05/2010 07:23

I totally agree.

In truth, tan skin is damaged skin. A person's skin darkens in the sun because it is being damaged by the rays. I have never understand how that can be considered 'healthy' looking.

I like my pale skin. And I intend to keep it pale.

Bring back Imperial Japan where pale skin was prized and revered! (but without the foot binding...)

And if they ask you if you are a vampire? Look them right in the eye, says 'Yes.' And walk away.

Wanderingsheep · 21/05/2010 07:34

I agree that you shouldn't have to cover up! (although careful that you don't burn )

It's people who take the mickey like this that make me dread getting my arms and legs out in the summer! I was laughed at by some friends in the park last year and it wound me up. I can't help it if my skin is fair. I do tan a little but it takes ages and long lengths of time sitting in the sun. I know, I'll look like a wrinkly prune shall I, just so that I'm an acceptable colour?

msrisotto · 21/05/2010 07:40

How strange! I'm pale and interesting and never get negative comments! Why would I cover up for other people? Bizzare!

brightyoungthing · 21/05/2010 07:43

I'm pale too but I do go really brown if try but I hate the sun so don't sun bathe. People think nothing of taking the piss out of me

When I was 15 I went to club La Santa in Lanzarote and was watching the windsurf lessons one day when the instructor came up to me and asked if I'd like a go. I replied no as it was too cold, he looked me up and down and said "whats the difference, being blue in the water or out of it?"

Also I endured a year of ribbing from a colleaugue from barbados who loved to ridicule me infront of everyone for being too white. She would come up to me and rub her arms on mine saying I needed a bit of her black to look nice!!!

Before I go abroad I used to use sun beds to brown up but I really don't want to do that this year so am going to unleash my white body upon Greece just as it is !

brightyoungthing · 21/05/2010 07:46

Wanderingsheep, my sunbather friends have started to look decidedly prune like now we are all in our 30's and I have no wrinkles at all!

When we are all 50 glory will be mine !!!

fatoftheland · 21/05/2010 07:56

Me too! I have always been white. Everyone comments on it! I usually make some reply about having lovely unwrinkled skin when I am older and the dangers of skin cancer.

cyb · 21/05/2010 07:58

I used to get those comments whenver I came back from holiday as I hadn't changed colour at all. But truth be told I was scared of getting even a little colour on me so stayed in the shade all the time. Now I dont bother

Maize · 21/05/2010 08:04

I get this. I was getting dressed for work today actually and debated not wearing tights but decided on it because I couldn't be bothered with the blue leg comments!

I am from northern england and have v.british colouring - dark hair, blue eyes, of COURSE I have very pale skin! I don't know why it seems to surprise so many people.

msrisotto · 21/05/2010 08:08

I guess if anyone mentioned my paleness, i'd just tell them that my sister had skin cancer at 27 and my grandad died of it. That'd shut them up pretty damn quickly i reckon.

helyg · 21/05/2010 08:23

I'm the same as you, except with freckles too. My only hope of going brown is if my freckles join up! I'm not a fan of fake tan, especially as a lot of brands irritate my skin. So I slap on a high factor and stay pale and interesting.

As other posters have said, we'll be wrinkle fre when we're older!

Ladyanonymous · 21/05/2010 08:29

I am very pale, I am the daughter of a red head and narrowly missed that joy.

I never ever try to get a tan as when I lived in NZ saw how terribly aging it is, and the high instances of skin cancer.

I do feel self conscious being so white and also hate fake tan but do use a moisteriser with the tanning stuff in which is really subtle but just gives me a little confidence boost.

I see people in the street who are completely orange and really wonder what how they percieve how they look....!!

colditz · 21/05/2010 08:34

We watch too much american and ozzie tv - we have forgotton what white people look like when they live in Englan - ie alabaster

Bucharest · 21/05/2010 08:43

People aren't meant to be orange. If we were, we'd have been born orange. (is my comeback when they start on me, which they do, calling me mozzarella legs)

Then I tell them about Nicole Kidman who never ever no not never exposes her skin to the sun. And look how fab she looks.

I feel self-conscious too, especially here where people go on sunbeds all year round. But then I console myself when I walk behind women with fantastic tanned legs and I think they are in their 20s and they turn round and it looks like they've got an old withered handbag instead of a face.

deaddei · 21/05/2010 09:22

Embrace your whiteness!
I am very dark haired, dark eyed but pale- I come out in all sorts of attractive rashes in the sun, and legs stay as pale as ever.
I slap on the factor 50, I will confess to a bit of ST T gradual tan- which to be honest doesn't make that much difference- but at the age of 50 have much younger looking skin- because ther's no sun damage.
You will all have the last laugh

AngelsOnHigh · 21/05/2010 09:39

My sister came home from a cruise with all white skin and brown hands.

Seems she lay in a deck chair completely covered with a towel but had to hold the towel with her hands to stop the wind from blowing the towel away

minimamoth · 21/05/2010 09:42

I agree with you deaddei. I too am pale, have no pigment, so always factor 50 and big hat etc. but am now 60 and my skin is in much better nick than many 20 years younger.
Embrace your beautiful ivory skin and you will not look like a leather sofa!!

KittyLilith · 21/05/2010 09:44

Hi all...another pale and interesting one here. It used to bother me when people commented on my skin; even had a neighbour tell me to rub gravy on my legs . I now embrace my paleness

McSnail · 21/05/2010 09:44

feels a bit pathetic because I've just slathered my pale blue legs in cheap fake tan

AndreaisSlowlyLosingIt · 21/05/2010 09:47

YADNBU I'm a redhead with the natural paleness or ghost like whiteness and am constantly told to sit in the sun to get some colour! I don't want colour I'd like to be young looking and wrinkle free for as long as possible thanks very much!
