Just a moan really

Went work in a summer skirt yesterday for the 1st time in i dont know how long, i had 'jokey' comments all day that i shouldn't get my legs out as i look too pasty, i was even asked if i was allergic to the sun and if i was a vampire . I dont tan at all, cant be arsed with faking it and its my natural skin colour.
A bit pathetic i know but it was bugging me.

How extraordinary that people think Its acceptable make such personal comments!

"You're too fat/your arms are too boney to wear a skimpy summer top" would be considered unacceptable and rude, so how is criticising a person's lack of tan acceptable?

YellowDaffodil · 21/05/2010 09:58

I usually find Fuck Off is an effective comeback when mocked about my beautiful pale limbs.

A friend who had a nasty habit of doing this had a spray tan last year. She was still orange (think David Dickinson)days later, I casually mentioned that a girl (late teens) we passed with similarly orange skin looked a ridiculous colour, then added that at least she had an excuse as she was young! Funnily enough my skin colour hasn't come up since.

crumpette · 21/05/2010 10:01

YANBU I am very pale out of the sun (ie most of the year) but I have sort of olive skin that goes very dark in the sun. However, working in an office all the time in England means I am acually a peculiar shade of blue-green. I hate it when it gets warm, as I still feel like I should be covering up my pasty limbs! Last summer on one of the hottest days I wore a skirt and sandals and NO TIGHTS to work and was met with a few 'you need a holiday' and 'I use st tropez' comments at work, but also real points and stares when I took my lunchbreak out in central London by orange girls who were clearly aghast at my avoidance of fake tan! Crazy- this is my skin colour, I shouldn't have to hide it !

minxofmancunia · 21/05/2010 10:12

YANBU, I'm dark hair, grey/blue eyes pale freckly skin combo. I wore a sun dress for dds christening in August 2 years ago and my legs look literally blue in the photos! I've always been v self conscious about my legs and tunny and have had a fair few comments over the years.

it's a shame as legs are in good shape and pre dcs had v v flat tummy just too shy to show it off in the sun! I used to be a st tropez addict but again, looking back at photos I looked ridicuous, faking it does NOT suit me, as dh says I look dirty (and not in a good way!) and even applied professionally it looks patchy.

So this year i'm going to be confident and proud of my paleness. Has anyone seen madonna live?? She's not shy of showing it and she's the palest person i've ever seen! Admittedly the work she's had done helps 9and the daily 2 hour workouts) but she's apparently fanatical about staying out of the sun due to the aging risk and the benefits are clear.

Tanned skin is v v ageing ultimately, you pay the price!

Downdog · 21/05/2010 10:16

I thought it was very cool now to be pale & untanned - think Nicole Kidman etc.

I used to be paranoid about getting my white legs out - and I do have some colour & will tan albeit very slowly. But I think white legs/skin look great in a slightly dramatic & surprising way.

Certainly preferable to orange. The obsession with tanning/fake tan does puzzle me.

worldgonemad72 · 21/05/2010 17:20

At least im not alone, i have very dark hair and blue eyes aswel! i chickened out and wore trousers today. Im going try and embrace my paleness and if anyone comments im now armed with a good amount of comeback comments, so thanks everyone! btw my mum has my colouring and she is wrinkle free at 56

traceybath · 21/05/2010 17:25

YANBU but lol at Nicole Kidman looking so good for her age because she doesn't sunbathe.

She may not but she has had way too much botox.

I'm pale and do use fake tan but just to take me to a normal colour rather than tanned if that makes sense.

As long as skin is well moisturised I think pale can/does look lovely.

2blessed2bstressed · 21/05/2010 17:26

Not alone! I'm Scottish, with the traditional dark red hair, green eyes and freckles. I'm pale blue at worst and freckled on alabaster at best - up til last year I faked it, but this year I really just can't be arsed so I'm white, white, white! And so's my lovely duvet cover - where last year it permanently looked like I'd just returned from Glastonbury and decided not to have a wash!

silverdogflower · 21/05/2010 17:37

I was so happy to see this thread! I thought I was the only one. I have dark hair and eyes and very plae skin and have always been self-conscious about it. Drs and midwives etc always asking if I feel Ok etc ('Yes I am always this colour' I reply wearily)

Feel lucky that lovely DH says he likes me pale; now i am past 40 i've don't do fake tan, and have decided to be 'proudly pale'!

Agree with other poster that people feel it's Ok to be rude to you if you are pale-skinned, they wouldn't dream of saying stuff to someone darker-skinned.

I am not only white but look quite mottled and veiny on my legs!!!

GetOrfMoiLand · 21/05/2010 17:40

I have whiter than white skin.

I never g brown, and gave up on that fake tan crap a couple of years ago. Funnily enough never get any snide comments (perhaps I look scary or something).

HairExtensions · 21/05/2010 17:52

Totally YANBU.

I gave up fake tan when I had the DCs as sleep was far more important, and I don't intend to start again even now I have the time. Being tanned actually does not suit me at all anyway.

PreciousCargo · 21/05/2010 18:00

We seem to be obsessed with tanning. I am afraid to say I do use fake tan on occassions, but feel this is better than damaging my skin. I have blonde hair and pale skin and am constantly reminded of the damage I have done to myself through sunbathing. It is just not worth it.

I agree with others on here that say pale does actually look nicer, models are always natural looking. It is a shame we feel pressured to be tanned to look good.

blackcurrants · 21/05/2010 18:10

another Proudly Pale here! Sod it, I don't have the time or energy for faking it OR sunbathing (plus, skin cancer in my family too - factor 50 for me, then). I've not had comments on pasty limbs since I left school, but I think I'd have a handy disbelieving smile and "how rude you are, to make personal comments!" ready if someone tried it!

pregnant, too hot, and easily enraged emoticon

darkandstormy · 21/05/2010 18:20

Pale is interesting, imo. Each to their own of course.

Macforme · 21/05/2010 18:23

As someone who had a keratoacanthoma ( 'mild' skin cancer) removed from my face 3 years ago aged 38 .. I would say be proud of your whiteness..it beats the alternative!

I am a typical English skin.. reddish brown hair and freckled and often burned as a kid. Never been a sunbather but I can fry just walking to the shop. 3 years ago this THING appeared on my face (google it.. really horrible) and when I was seen at the hospital they had me in the little operating room and it whipped off within 20 mins! I now have a scar on my face forever, and have been warned my skin is the sort that needs to stay white.
Never used a sunbed, never oiled myself to fry (except as a teen of course!) but it was a real wakeup call to getting my factor 50.....

SarfEasticated · 21/05/2010 18:29

I am a pale, freckly red-head, and have spent most of my formative years trying to get a tan, now quite honestly can't be arsed. Why deny our racial heritage! I am pale and proud (and too lazy to put fake tan on!)

BritFish · 21/05/2010 19:04

whiter than white, with a few freckles, fake redhead, and proud.
fake tan just looks like make-up on my legs, im proud of the paleness!

NormalityBites · 21/05/2010 19:09

I am whiter than white. And yes I do get comments. However this summer I have a new weapon. All I need to say is 'well, my mother died from skin cancer earlier this year, so...' And then they shut up

NormalityBites · 21/05/2010 19:10

Forgot to say YANBU, at all.

echt · 21/05/2010 19:11

Shocked at how rude people can be, handing out "advice" to the pale and interesting.

LadyBlaBlah · 21/05/2010 19:22

Nothing worse than orange fake tan on pale skin.
YANBU

AndieWalsh · 21/05/2010 19:25

YANBU. I'm as white as a sheet. I have long been a user of fake tan - used to do it religiously, in fact - but these days I find I have better things to do with my time than to stand around air drying fecking St Tropez , so am faking it less and less.

Be pale and proud, I say.

sungirltan · 21/05/2010 19:33

op - are all your colleagues flawless nad perfect looking? (not implying non tanned is a flaw) no didn't think so :-)

Kaloki · 21/05/2010 20:30

Dress Goth, no one will question your skin tone then!

notthatfunnyreally · 21/05/2010 20:30

YANBU
