To expect the Doctor to respect my wishes?

I have not vaccinated my youngest child. I have done this after much research and made an informed decision. The Doctor's surgery has phoned me several times now and written requesting I go in for a discussion about this. I haven't got time for a visit to discuss this, nor do I want to so I said if I had to, I could talk about it on the phone....I have had the Doctor on the phone this afternoon grilling me about my choices, really trying to scare me into having the jabs done and trying to make me feel bad. She cannot see my point of view at all and has been very rude.

Is is really too much to expect a Doctor to respect the decisions I make about my own children ?

Has anyone else experienced this ?

Tokengirl- I am also very very sorry for loss, i do know someone who had a similar reaction when they were a baby- they didn't die but her mind never grew older than a 6 year old. It is very rare.
However reactions like that happened from the original diseases as well and probably at
When I was younger I wasn't given the measles jab because my sister still had febrile convulsions past 6 years old, we have a long family history of them. I spoke to my gp and she pointed out the risk of FC is far greater from the disease than from the vaccination.

MY DSs last febrile convulsion was a year ago when he was 13 and has 20 or so of them.

Roald Dahl wrote a very moving pro measles vaccine piece. His perfectly healthy daughter caught measles when she was 7 and died of measles encephelitis www.blacktriangle.org/blog/?p=715 it was written in 1986 when 20 children a year were still dying from measles.

My kids are fully vaxed (and when I say fully, we are off-the beaten-track travellers so I'm talking typhoid, HepA/B, Rabies etc ...). My husband is a Gp and I take great offence at people saying he only vaxes other people's children due to being paid. He would do it even if there was no payment as he believes it is best for the children (he didn't do Swine Flu vaccines as wasn't convinced!).

can I note that the link saying vaccines cause anorexia says 'anorexia' meaning weight loss, not 'anorexia nervosa'. I think the whole thing is OTT, but it is not saying that the DTaP makes people develop a mental illness.

Just one more reason why you really need to knwo what you are talking about....

mamasparkle · 22/05/2010 11:03

Excuse me but regardless of what your opinion is,a lady has just posted on here saying her baby DIED and the majority of you have not even had the compassion or manners to commiserate! And those of you who did, then followed it with a but....sorry there is no BUT when you are offering someone condolences! You should be ashamed of yourself if you ignored her sad posts...just backs up my view that there are some real nasty unfeeling people on here.

TheBride · 22/05/2010 11:05

You dont, but your failure to combat my arguments in any way clearly supports my argument that critical thinking isnt your thing.

You know I'm right basically and you dont want to publicly admit that everyone else vaccinating their child gives you the luxury not to vaccinate yours.

expatinscotland · 22/05/2010 11:06

Most GP's I've met are parents themselves who vaccinate because they feel it's in childrens' best interests, not due to monetary interests.

Mine had all theirs, although not swine flu because they actually had swine flu.

healthymum12 · 22/05/2010 11:06

My brother nearly died when he caught the measles - this was in the days before the MMR. I can't imagine how a responsible parent can make a decision to allow their child to get a life threatening disease when there is a simple painless and safe solution to avoid putting your child in that position. It a bit like holding their hand in carpark! If more people were as selfish as you are then there would be more children dying of these diseases.

expatinscotland · 22/05/2010 11:07

I had the rabies vaccine and it sucked.

But I also contracted HepA in Venezuela, there was no vaccine for it then and I don't know if there is one for it now, and it sucked even worse than any vaccine could have.

My mother lost 50% of the hearing in her right ear from measles. She was lucky. One of the girls in her class (Y3) died.

Now she's nearly 70, she has all sorts of problems with that ear and has a grommet in it. Her hearing is much diminished in it now.

My dad's two cousins died from pneumonia as a complication of whooping cough in the 1930s.

Born in 1936 as he was, he personally knew many who died or were permanently disabled/left in fragile health following polio.

They both also know several who became permenantly infertile following mumps.

TheBride · 22/05/2010 11:13

Not really. I suspect you are a little afraid that I will trump you, but I do have an IQ of 141 so that's to be expected I guess.

However, at least I've proved to my own satisfaction that you're one of these people that reads an academic paper you found on google that supports your closely held and paraniod view, then claims you've done your research and quickly clams up in the face of any dissent.

Anyway, go off and talk about it with the people that agree with you, convince yourself you're right, etc.

Youre welcome. Anytime.

ding ding. End of round 1.

bruffin · 22/05/2010 11:31

mamasparkle. - what are you supposed to say. It was hugely tragic for tokenfemale, however deaths that are preventable from the original diseases are tragic for their parents as well.

weegiemum · 22/05/2010 11:40

Dh just asked what I'm reading. I explained.

He is personally very offended that anyone would think he vaccinated children for financial reasons.

His comment - "there are a lot of better ways to make a lot of money in GP than vaccinantions". You can cream off the profit in a lot of more subtle ways than sticking needles in babies.

Gps vaccinate children because they believe it is right!!!

expatinscotland · 22/05/2010 11:42

DS just had a Hib booster yesterday.

weegiemum · 22/05/2010 11:45

Expat - there is now a HepA jag - we have all had it - it gets linked with typhoid as they often go together. A 10 year protection thing these days.

So if you ever feel the need to revisit Ven, then get it (hey, we loved Caracas!)

expatinscotland · 22/05/2010 11:48

Ah, see, this was in 1988 that I got HepA.

Haven't been back to Ven since .

Would rather have had a jab if there had been one, though.

My dad got typhoid. Being nearly 74 and having worked abroad, he's had a lot of shit over the years.

weegiemum · 22/05/2010 11:53

Ah expat it wasn't my dh sticking the needle in though was it !!!

CantSupinate · 22/05/2010 11:53

I wonder if it works if anyone like OP, who has obviously researched her decision carefully and has even face-to-face told the surgery of her reasons and resolve -- ever changes their mind? Because if it doesn't often change the minds of resolved non-Vaxers like OP, then it's a complete waste of NHS resources to keep pestering her about it.

I'm a satisfied vaxer and would urge almost everyone else to get standard vacc too, btw. I hope you have left the thread OP, not much in it for you now!

Nellykats · 22/05/2010 11:54

"Sunscreen? Yeah, the chemicals in it"

Leonie ,I now see you fear "chemicals", in which case you should really avoid everything around you as everything has chemical properties. The term "chemicals"means nothing and shows that you really have no clue what you're talking about...
The only reason you can happily go on with your children not getting vaccinated is
a) others do
b) if you or your children get ill you will all get treated for free on the wonderful nhs and get a few "chemicals" that will sort you out.
Just see what happens in developing countries where health provisions are dire or in countries where there is no free doctors and hospitals for you to complain about.

And all of that would be fine if it was only about your family, but when your child gets a pregnant woman or another child ill then it will be far more serious than "your choice"

OldMacEIEIO · 22/05/2010 12:09

well I have an IQ of 141.5, so you should all jolly well listen and agree to what I say

mind you, I also have an ego.quotient of 150
so maybes you shouldn't

expatinscotland · 22/05/2010 12:09

I have to say, weegie, having been on the receiving end, he's WAY better at giving jabs and taking blood than many. And I've unfortunately had to have many jabs, canulas and blood draws in my time.
