Exacto Topsy. Seria mas afectado leerlo como si no tuviera ni una palabra de castellano

No tengo el menor idea como se pronuncia Kenya.

skihorse · 20/05/2010 08:23

anonacfr - ah, I'm delighted to see your knowledge of um... those letters with hats on for example - is as broad as my own!

BoldChislers · 20/05/2010 08:24

yes i can't even add an accent. On my old key board it was ctrl+shift plus the letter. Since i got this mac i haven't been able to do a single accent. heaven only knows where they're hidden.

QSnondomicile · 20/05/2010 08:25

So is the idea that you shall pronounce the name of a country in the language of the country? Or in the English name for the name of the country?

ZZZenAgain · 20/05/2010 08:27

well I am going to have problems when we start having to pronounce Korea or Thailand correctly in the language of the country. I don't have a clue what they call their own countries but I am sure I can't reproduce it

BoldChislers · 20/05/2010 08:27

No, but a name you would pronounce correctly!! You wouldn't continue to say seeobawn instead of siobhan after you'd been told it was shuvawn. Being poncey or non poncey not an issue so much wiht names imo.

I don't say Cheeleh. I don't say frahhhhnce either.

QSnondomicile · 20/05/2010 08:29

I concur, by the logic of this thread, that the Germans should not say "Norwegen" about Norway, but Norge, and the British should not say Norway either, they too should say Norge, AND pronounce it correctly? Because otherwise they are ignorant?

Am I right.

BoldChislers · 20/05/2010 08:32

yeah imo that would be stupid. but you'd still make an effort to pronounce mette Janssen correctly? (not at all difficult though)

ZZZenAgain · 20/05/2010 08:32

nooooooooo
if we pronounce it correctly, it is kind of showing of

Go on though, tell us, how do you correctly pronounce Norge?

BoldChislers · 20/05/2010 08:33

noryeah ??

does somebody know?

ZZZenAgain · 20/05/2010 08:33

QS should know

ZZZenAgain · 20/05/2010 08:34

she's Norwegian

BoldChislers · 20/05/2010 08:36

i am going to speak English all day and I will resist the temptation to slip into other languages spontaneously when talking about their country/people!

ZZZenAgain · 20/05/2010 08:37

I am resisting the temptation to slip into Korean today too

ZZZenAgain · 20/05/2010 08:37

come to think of it I got a mail from Dad yesterday telling me how to say happy birthday in Korean.

My dad is enamoured of all things Korean these days...

wahwahwah · 20/05/2010 08:38

It reminds me of the Radio 4 comedy series a few years back, which had a 'Tim-nice-but-dim' type and his gap-year 'adventures'.

"When I was kidnapped in Malawi, or as the locals say 'Malwa'..."

I suppose you had to be there. It was very funny though.

ZZZenAgain · 20/05/2010 08:39

Apparently transcribed it is:
Saeng-il chuk'ha - haeyo
pronounced:
sang -eel chucker - hah yoh

Just to tide us over whilst waiting to hear about Norge..

BouncingTurtle · 20/05/2010 08:40

here's a helpful guide on how to say Kenya

All though I reserve the right to say
Chil-AY
Bar-the-lona
Ba-len-thia
Pae-eya
Chori-tho
Rio Grand-ay

As my Dad is Spanish, I'm not being pretentious, I am more familiar with the Spanish pronunciations!

I often find when I'm speaking I tend to drop pronouns, and chuck in the odd Spanish word out of habit, as although I am not fluent in Spanish, my dad initially wanted to bring me up as bilingual, but was told to stop speaking Spanish to me by a HV who told my mum I had a speech delay!!!

QSnondomicile · 20/05/2010 08:41

So if we cant say it correctly in the language it is spoken in the country we are refering to, why is it so annoying if somebody else cant pronounce the name of the same foreign country correctly in english?

Take me, you have me confused now, because I am no longer sure that I can pronounce Kenya or Chile in a manner that would satisfy you lot.

Yet, I do know how I would pronounce Kenya and Chile in norwegian.

And you would brand me ignorant and annoying.

BoldChislers · 20/05/2010 08:42

Catalans don't say BarTHelona though! they say BarSalona, so saying Barthelona opens up a whole can of worms!

ZZZenAgain · 20/05/2010 08:43

PMSL that it says "forget Norway!" Sorry QS but it fitted so well in the thread

BoldChislers · 20/05/2010 08:43

Look it's going to take a foreigner to sort you all out here.

Say the name of the country in your OWN language.

Make the best effort you can to get somebody's name right.

[gavel]

as they say on MN

QSnondomicile · 20/05/2010 08:45

Nor - Ge

With a hard G. the e pronounced like in Erica

ZZZenAgain · 20/05/2010 08:45

"why is it so annoying if somebody else cant pronounce the name of the same foreign country correctly in english?"

because we like it complicated. Only foreigners think we are tolerant tbh, we all know better.

ZZZenAgain · 20/05/2010 08:47

ooh I can do that

poncey hat on - I can pronounce Norge correctly. Not too difficult really, is it? Have to throw it into my conversation today somehow, earn some dislike
