DS had 2 friends to play. While they were in the garden I sneaked a peek at their book bags to see what they were reading.

Pushy parent or what?

Please tell me you've done the same....

OP posts:
TheFoosa · 14/05/2010 18:39

prepare to take cover....

Lulumaam · 14/05/2010 18:39

YABVU and so nosy and competitive

who cares what they are reading?

if they are on a higher reading level, are you going to think less of your own DS

pointless and nosy

pigletmania · 14/05/2010 18:39

YABU very much so, just chill they might not like the same books as your DS

notnowbernard · 14/05/2010 18:40

I remember this being done a year or so ago

Think it exploded at about 1000 posts

YABcompletelyU

(If this indeed a genuine post)

Silver1 · 14/05/2010 18:41

YABU- Did you also steam open any private letters home, and skim the reading diary for signs of learning disability or ability?

Gibbon · 14/05/2010 18:41

Rather odd thing to do. Do you feel dirty and guilt ridden now?

whatwasthatagain · 14/05/2010 18:42

alaisanon - with you there - I even check their workbooks to see what they are getting. In my defence I was concerned that DD seemed to get A's for pretty crappy work so I compared with her friends and discovered they all got A's for equally crappy work. Felt sneaky, but I am sure we are not the only two

Manda25 · 14/05/2010 18:42

Nope. Never done that !! Bit odd actually.

FranSanDisco · 14/05/2010 18:42

So, who is best then? What did you learn? Is your dc the best?? YABVU but then I think you know that

VengefulKitty · 14/05/2010 18:42

I just outright ask the other parents or children. 'What's your DC reading now?' 'What are you reading now then xxx?' in a taking interest kind of way.

No need to snoop.

But I also see nothing wrong with benchmarking where DS comes in comparison to his peers/,class. Nothing to do with being pushy. Just putting my mind at ease that he is doing OK.

Oh cmon everyone does it, especially if you are feeling inssecure about your own childs ability. YANBU.

SecretSlattern · 14/05/2010 18:43

YABU - none of your damn business

FabIsGoingToGetFit · 14/05/2010 18:43

YABU

I have never done it and never would.

Not sure pushy parent is the word...

notnowbernard · 14/05/2010 18:44

"Everybody does it"

I never have

Am interested, OP: how old is DS and what reading level is he on?

LetThereBeRock · 14/05/2010 18:44

YABVU and I'm quite sure that not everyone goes snooping through other people's belongings.

One of my friends always looks in my DSs book bag, drives me crazy. I am well aware that my DS struggles with reading and is on books for children 2 years below him, I don't need to see the fake look of shock on her face as she exclaims "Oh DD is on blah blah blah book" Its like she needs to validate herself and her DD buy comparing with mine and declaring herself superior

Oh well. Her DD may read at a higher level but my DS gives the best cuddles

BelleDameSansMerci · 14/05/2010 18:45

Well, at least tell us what you found!

Lulumaam · 14/05/2010 18:46

have never and would never do that

i think it is sneaky

if you care that much ask the other parent outright !

if you are worried about your DCs , speak to the teacher or ask to speak to the SENCO.

yabu
no I wouldn't
would you go through thier mums bag as well.

helyg · 14/05/2010 18:49

Was it a clear book bag?

In DC's school their homework/reading bags are clear folders with handles, which makes it pretty difficult to avoid noticing whether they are on the same books as your DC.

YABU if you went rooting through though!

traceybath · 14/05/2010 18:51

I think you are joking/making it up.

Clearly going through someone else's belongings is unspeakably rude.
