As I said before the election, I will never ever understand why pensioners, single parents, those in the lower wage bracket voted Tory. I think there is a social desirability element to it all.

Well, we have apparently got this for 5 years now.

And to those who say all parties would have provided massive cuts, it is where the cuts are made that are the problem. The Tories cut in the most disadvantaged groups historically, and then start a blame culture - you heard it in Hamhead's speech ".....getting people to take responsibility for themselves..." which is a pretty shit code for "cut benefits" because everyone on benefits of any kind is a scrounger Which is why lefties get so annoyed, because where do these guys come from? Privilege and huge personal wealth ! 5% pay cut? You vacuous arseholes. How about you pay a decent amount of tax on what you have.......and don't even start on Inheritance Tax.

And before you all make assumptions - I/we are in the higher earner bracket. I just hate inequality, and I never, unlike most of the Tories, think that I got here because I am better and more responsible than anyone else. A lot of it was luck of the draw.

MumNWLondon · 14/05/2010 10:26

YABU - the country faces bankruptcy! Honestly from some of the posts here thats what people would prefer to happen!

Neither the Tories nor the Lb-Dems mentioned family allowance in their manifestos - it was tax credits and trust funds that were mentioned.

Of course I'll be a bit annoyed if CB is cut but the government will have to make lots of unpopular decisions. Not making them will reduce our credit rating and push up the cost of borrowing, such that mortgages will be much more expensive and repossesions will soar. Is that what you want?????

And as others have said maybe cutting CB will reduce the number of redundancies they will have to make....

callmeDave · 14/05/2010 10:26

Does anyone know when the budget is going to be?

And yes Expat - I voted LibDem to keep Tories out - for whatever reason, Labour barely even have a candidate around here.

I will never ever never ever do that again. Twats.

ahundredtimes · 14/05/2010 10:31

Starting now though Minty, means that the economy will shrink and there will be high unemployment and perhaps a double dip recession

that's why the LD's and Labour were opposed to it

Everyone knew there would be cuts - but at least Labour were clear on raising NI, keeping inflation and VAT low and the LD's on taxing those on higher incomes more.

The Tories didn't spell it out - and they should have. They just talked about the Big Society. I think this is why they didn't win the election tbh

There will be higher VAT and lots and lots of job losses this way - and perhaps a shrinking economy when it should be growing

camaleon · 14/05/2010 10:31

Sorry, I have not read the whole thread, and someone may have pointed this out already.
I believe CB cannot be cut by any EU government. It is a European Union decision that brought as CB. Tax credits are a different issue.

4madboys · 14/05/2010 10:33

do you really know that many people expat that just make excuses and cant work when they should?

perhaps its different where you live, but i really dont experience that where i live and we have bought a house that is NOT in a nice area, purely because we couldnt afford to otherwise, but i have to say that most of my neighbours work, in many cases both parents work and they juggle childcare etc, none of them are well off at all, yes i do see the odd family who seem to have a lot of money and yet dont do much to earn it, or so it seems? but i dont think you can judge people like that.

all we really get is a snapshot of other peoples live, i KNOW how hard my dp works in an extremely stresful job, with long hours and not great pay, to support his family. we have not been abroad since we had the childrne, they dont even have passports actually. Until recently we only had one tv in the house, our eldest now has his own tv (stricly limited as i am mean!) which was a special deal from tesco as a birthday present.

we dont go out as a couple, if the boys go to the cinema then i take them to the kids club at the weekends where it is only £1 pre child. etc etc

i DO understand what you are saying that there ARE some people who do take state help for granted but i really dont know that many people that do, despite living on a council estate. i know plenty of single parents who bust a gut working as childminders etc to try and get off benefits. NOT everybody makes excuses and i think you are generalising a bit that people do tbh.

hmm stinky nappy to change....

expatinscotland · 14/05/2010 10:33

I agree, Lady.

I wept when GB left office the other day (did you see the support thread ).

But they're in now.

It's how it is.

It's like my dad, he always votes Republican . When I was at home, my mom was bitching about Obama. My dad was silent. I said, 'Dad, how come you never bitch about Obama?' He said, 'What would be the point besdies wasted breath? What a waste of time. I didn't vote for him, but he's the President now. He's the Commander in Chief and that's just how it is till next time.'

I turn over the channel everytime DC comes on.

But he'll still be PM no matter what channel is on.

TheArsenicCupCake · 14/05/2010 10:34

In the old days..( when I had ds1).. we didn't get things like wtc or ctc.. We did get married mans tax allowence but that was it. We worked,( I studied and worked at the same time). That was just the way it was.. I see wtc/ ctc or help with childcare costs as a gift tbh.. And it will effect us.. But I'll just work harder and around dh and the dc's..
IMO lots of parents on here have always had such things ctc available to them as they have young children.. And it would be a shock to have that removed or reduced.

Just wanted to point out that wtc and ctc hasn't always been there.

LadyBlaBlah · 14/05/2010 10:34

Exactly 100x - and to think these amateurs have absolutely no experience of running anything, never mind a bloody country is simply frightening.

Cuts in this way will not encourage growth.

I predict a riot

grumpypants · 14/05/2010 10:34

I think it's just a good headline - I'd buy the paper just to read more if I thought it wd affect me. Spin and fear.

expatinscotland · 14/05/2010 10:37

'do you really know that many people expat that just make excuses and cant work when they should?

People on here certainly do. And I'm not the only one to notice it, even on this thread, and I'm not talking about carers of people with disabled children or people who are ill before everyone jumps up.

I'm also not talking about my experience IRL. Most people here work, too.

Bought a house?

We couldn't afford that even in the worst area.

We rent a council flat and our downstairs neighbour is always a criminal because the council uses that flat as temporary housing and it's only 1 bed so it's always a single, male criminal.

I mean, you know, break out the violins.

Could be worse! A whole lot worse!

ahundredtimes · 14/05/2010 10:43

Exactly LadyBlah

and the other thing that makes me cross is that the Tories made such a big deal about the 'job tax' saying they wouldn't raise NI

Now they say, 'oh it's the employers that won't be affected, the employees will still have an NI rise'

DaisymooSteiner · 14/05/2010 10:45

Well, it looks like Capital Gains is going to back up again. This is a tax that really doesn't affect anyone other than those who are rich enough to be disposing of their 'assets'. Let's not forget it was Labour who cut it whilst removing the 10% tax band.

IMoveTheStars · 14/05/2010 10:45

what lowrib said.

LadyBlaBlah · 14/05/2010 10:46

I am past splutter and have reached the AAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH stage

I have been livid since Monday now

cupcakesandbunting · 14/05/2010 10:48

The "wtc/ctc hasn't always been there" argument is a bit of a red herring, ArsenicCupcake. We have lots of things now that our mothers probably didn't. It's called progression.

OrmRenewed · 14/05/2010 10:49

Well much as I am not a Tory I think that this is something that is overdue. DH and I have a good income now. But still we get 185 every month - which is lovely but hardly an essential. If people like me and those better off have tolose that money it is a price worth paying if it helps to save services.

I have a question for all who claim it and don't need it: can you stop getting it? Tell them not to give it to you anymore? Not claim it at all if you have no need of it?

I'm genuinely interested, it's not meant as a dig at all.

4madboys · 14/05/2010 10:54

the ONLY reason we were able to buy a house was because we got some money from mil after the death of a relative and that enabled us to put down a deposit, it seemed like a good idea at the time (5yrs ago) as mortgage prices were and still are, cheaper than renting. but now we are really worried about how much interest rates will go up, we always go for a fixed rate deal so we KNOW what we will be paying. but i dont know how easy it will be to get that kind of deal the next time we need to re do our mortgage.

At least you have a council house, it is a NIGTHMARE trying to get one here, we looked into it when dp was made redundent 7yrs ago, and even if we had been made homeless then we would have spent months if not years in a bedsit before getting a flat or house.

i know that we are VERY fortunate that we have family who have been in a financial position to help us out, but that was only because dp's dad died at a young age of misdiagnosed bowl cancer

i dont expect that we should be given anything, but i do believe that as a society we all have a responsiblity to each other, and part of that is helping lower income families through tax rebates etc.

btw our bought council house, well we have another 30 odd years or paying the mortgage before its bought, is in a small cul de sac with flats at one end and they too are rented out to some unsuitable types, we quite often have had the police and riot vans parked outside, but many of the other neighbours are in fact nice and the kids play together.

everything is swings and roundabouts tbh and yes i am very aware that things could be worse, MUCH worse, i have four healthy kids, i have successfully battled back from and got well after suffering postnatal psychosis and sevre depression, with not much help from the nhs who just told me i needed to get more sleep and pull myself together..

and i havent noticed on mumsnet that lots of people expect things to be given to them, but then i dont actually spend that much time on here, i find it too big a board, tbh and often go days without posting at all unless something catches my eye, like this thread!

and i am NOT trying to start an argument with you expat, i have seen you post before and you often make valid points, i am just VERY wary of making generalisations about people and just saying that 'you should just get a jo, shift work etc' because it is not always that simple.

fwiw i DO think that cb should be means tested as should the heating payments made to old people, as plenty of them, my mil included do not need them.

but as ever the worst hit will be those who can least afford it, especially with vat increase and that sucks and no one is unreasonable in complaining about it, well as long as they didnt vote tory and then they deserve to go to hell in a handbasket

jellybeans · 14/05/2010 10:55

YANBU

I read (not officially) that ctc were probably going to be cut around 40K but not read anything about CB. Maybe they will just freeze increases for several years?

It will affect us as we get some CTC but we will just have to deal with it and hope the other measures are positive.
