Family outings to crowded supermarkets.

AIBU To think that one parent should stay at home with the babies/children whilst the other parent does the weekly shop.I understand this cannot be helped in single parent families, but there were lots of whole family units in supermarket this afternoon. My two dc stayed at home with dh,I don't understand why others don't do this. One family I know who I saw there today dd3 was screaming the place down, she obviously had better things to be doing than shopping.Unfair on kids, fellow shoppers etc.

Nobody enjoys Lakeside, surely?

tarantula · 08/05/2010 19:30

Neither of us drive so we both go to the supermarket so we can get all the stuff home which means dd(6) has to come with us. She now understands meal planning and wrote the menu for this week as well as helping to write the list of what is needed to cook the meals. She is also in charge of the list at the supermarket. She likes going shopping which is more than can be said for me and dp who both loathe it.

She has a good eye for the bargains too esp. in the meat section and of course the freebie tasters .
Maybe this is because she has been coming shopping with us (and helping) since she was baby.

PollyTicks · 08/05/2010 19:30

YABU and a real bore.

darkandstormy · 08/05/2010 19:32

Pollyticks Of course you are so interesting?

OP posts:
SpringHeeledJack · 08/05/2010 19:34

YABU

we both have to go because

  1. I don't drive
  1. dp has not yet realised that the whole point of taking a shopping list is that you buy the things that are on the list

rrrrrrrrrrrr!

nappyzoneloveslindor · 08/05/2010 19:35

We all go together when i have not managed to do it online and actually my 2dc (3and 7) have just moaned because its been 4 weeks since we last all went. DH loves ASDA. They like to get involved with picking out our meals / makin pizzas up and weighing and stuff - yes we really know how to get on everyones tits

PollyTicks · 08/05/2010 19:42

Um...I don't get het up in supermarkets, so, urrr....yes, guess I am!

darkandstormy · 08/05/2010 19:45

Neither do I just think that other people could be a bit more sensible at times.

Salbysea · 08/05/2010 19:47

YABU

if both parents only have limited time off work together (and the shopping needs to fit into that time somehow) then it can be valuable time spend together rather than a chunk taken out of their already limited time off together

go to a 24 hour supermarket late at night alone while the co-shoppers are snuggled up together

darkandstormy · 08/05/2010 19:49

Salby surely it is quicker for one just to whizz around?

OP posts:
Salbysea · 08/05/2010 19:49

and my DS loves the supermarket - he loves the doctors waiting room too

SHOCK · 08/05/2010 19:49

Child hater

darkandstormy · 08/05/2010 19:51

shock who?

OP posts:
darkandstormy · 08/05/2010 19:53

SHOCK Why are you a child hater?

Tidey · 08/05/2010 19:54

I prefer going on my own, so that's what I do when possible. If you have pre-schoolers and are a SAHM, you really have no choice. Each to their own innit.

MiladyDeWinterOfDiscontent · 08/05/2010 19:55

You are being disingenuous there darkandstormy and I claim my five pounds

hmc · 08/05/2010 19:57

YABU - I didn't take my dc's when small because I couldn't stand the irritated tuts from folk who couldn't bear small children (and would often come to verbal blows with them - I just can't let things go - shrugs)...so I would leave mine at home.

However, I totally unreservedly support the rights of families to go to the supermarkets with dc's in tow if that floats their boat - and fuck anyone who doesn't like it. I've been to a funeral today so you'll have to forgive me if I am somewhat plain speaking

coppertop · 08/05/2010 19:58

I like to take my children out as much as possible so that they can be around other people. Otherwise there's a danger that they might turn into adults who don't understand how or why other people's circumstances could possibly be any different to their own.

darkandstormy · 08/05/2010 19:59

milady what are you on about, don't get you sorry.

OP posts:
hmc · 08/05/2010 20:01

coppertop - lol, excellent

Salbysea · 08/05/2010 20:01

I don't care if it would be quicker, I don't hate shopping and we always have a laugh and nice chats going round together

don't care if we annoy people because the people who are annoyed by a family out shopping and chatting amongst themselves are the type of people who'd still be annoyed by SOMETHING anyway even if children were banned and only one member of a family was allowed in at a time

don't mind families been there and done it, it's the gangs of yobs who hang around in the evenings and are abusive that bothers me.

junglist1 · 08/05/2010 20:04

You can hold your own DarkandStormy I like it

poshsinglemum · 08/05/2010 20:04

ROLF at whole family units. Am I not a whole family then? Clearly not!though!
Kids and supermarkets aren't a great combination
