ice cream and jam

pingviner · 01/05/2010 20:59

I have just asked DP if there is anything sweet in the house
and he brought me a bowl of vanilla icecream with a spoonful of jam on top

seriously - is this normal practice? He says its totally usual where he comes from, I think hes taking the piss in some strange indefinable way

obviously I have eaten it but still think its strange

AIBU or is it him?

What a darling husband!

I am trying to diet, so I wee on anything tasty-looking first.

zisforzebra · 01/05/2010 21:01

I did see an episode of Come Dine With Me where a woman served vanilla icecream with some slightly warmed up strawberry jam as a desert. She came last.

Still, ice cream is ice cream . . .

BessieBoots · 01/05/2010 21:02

God, that sounds lush...

winnybella · 01/05/2010 21:03

Hmmm...where is he from? Where I'm from we used jam (well, confiture) as a garnish on things, but that was a while ago when there wasn't anything in the shops (former Communist block country).

Isn't that just baked alaska without the sponge and meringue crust?

Still, ice cream is nice, jam is nice...

zisforzebra · 01/05/2010 21:03

Sorry dessert

differentID · 01/05/2010 21:03

that's just weird! sorry.

what was wrong with just a bowl of vanilla ice cream? maybe with some cocoa sprinkled ontop and allowed to meld to go all chocolately?

epithet · 01/05/2010 21:05

My mum was out of strawberry sauce last week so she heated up some pip-free raspberry jam with a splash of water and used that instead on the dds' ice cream. They liked it, I'm told.

LaurieFairyCake · 01/05/2010 21:05

Not weird - heat it up and it's fruit compote and all posh.

BeatRoute · 01/05/2010 21:08

When you think about it, jam is just fruit and sugar boiled up, so it's perfect for an icecream topping! We used to have jam mixed into tinned rice pudding which was lovely and also my Dad would put neat Vimto on our vanilla icecream as a topping. Beautiful!

BeatRoute · 01/05/2010 21:08

So yeah, YABU!

pingviner · 01/05/2010 21:30

I wont say where he's from but he thinks the UK is pretty third world where icecream is concerned...

(And now hes all cocky because many of you have said I am unreasonable)

I could have accepted warmed jam? or compote but a big spoon of it from the jar just seems weird, though it tasted OK
Shouldnt really complain though, I got fed

I like to add peanut butter and strawberry jam...crunchy peanut butter, otherwise it has nothing to bite into...mmmmmmm, now I want some icecream!

SpringHeeledJack · 01/05/2010 21:38

think yourself lucky

my Mum used to give us Bird's custard with a teaspoon of jam in it

at least you got ice cream

KurriKurri · 01/05/2010 21:40

Obviously it's compulsory to have a big blob of jam on rice pudding or semolina, not sure about ice cream. I'd be willing to try it though.

Am rofl at 'obviously I have eaten it but still think its strange'

Possibly because I'd have eaten it too with exact same expression on my face. You've confirmed he's a foreigner, maybe even American? Whatever, he's a freak!

tethersend · 01/05/2010 21:49

SpringHeeledJack, you were lucky... my dad used to make us sugar sandwiches.

White sliced bread, margarine and sugar. 'Disappointing' doesn't even come close.

SpringHeeledJack · 01/05/2010 21:51

Heh! my kids would kill for a white-bread-sugar-sandwich

BoysAreLikeDogs · 01/05/2010 21:54

hell I would kill you for a white bread sugar sandwich

Oh I had made a cheese cake and when we got down to the last slices we had ran out of raspberry coulis and dh heated up jam and poured it over it, IT WAS BLOODY GORGEOUS!!

tethersend · 01/05/2010 22:00

After eating a white bread sugar sandwich, we would kill anything that moved. We were off our tits.

SpringHeeledJack · 01/05/2010 22:01
