mn is using some kind of web page tracker to link us to our facebook pages

how dare you

how fucking dare you

Don't see what the problem is - mumsnet can't see your facebook profile, it's a link that only works/exists on your computer. If you don't want it to do this you need to untick the box which says 'remember me on this computer' next time you log into facebook.

mmrbonbon · 01/05/2010 05:47

really? it's amusing that an anonymous site isn't anonymous except on the page?

it's amusing that I have just created a link that wasn't there before between here and fb? it's amusing that I'm not savvy enough to understand that would happen?

why is that funny, wmmc?

mmrbonbon · 01/05/2010 05:49

Kitten: so far as I understand it's not just a link on this computer any more. I linked from here to fb when I was logged in. So out there in etherworld or whatever, mmrbonbon is irretrievably linked with my fb page.

Nothing on the web is anonymous. I find it funny that people assume it is. However in this case, unless you have chosen to use Facebook, there's no easy way to connect the two.

I think it's ironic you are making big angry statements in multiple threads. You are creating lots of links to yourself you see. Instead of emailing MNHQ you broadcast your displeasure!

mmrbonbon · 01/05/2010 06:05

wmmc have a good laugh then at the fact that I clicked on the fb link without realising

enjoy someone else's discomfort and your own superiority

ho ho ho

whomovedmychocolate · 01/05/2010 06:12

Oh get over yourself. If I go all over mumsnet making big angry statements people will take the piss out of me too!

And rightly so! You put this in AIBU after all

mmrbonbon · 01/05/2010 06:17

get over myself?

oh sorry i forgot you're a better person than me

oooh fight fight fight fight!!!

calm down dear.
It's a bit much for this time in the morning.

MamaG · 01/05/2010 06:31

The thing is, all the snippets of information you put on MN can build up and have someone say oh hang on, I know her.

I think the FB icon will perhaps remind those who DON'T want to be identified online that this ISN'T an anonymous form. I was identified by a RL mate by a drawing of a whisk fgs! That's how simple it can be.

CarmenSanDiego · 01/05/2010 06:32

Ok... This is what happens. Assuming you have set Facebook to remember your login, when you click the 'F' link from Mumsnet to Facebook, a 'Share' box comes up. If you then click 'share' on that share box, you will make a link on your Facebook profile to that particular Mumsnet discussion (thread).

A link to the thread will appear on your Facebook wall but it won't tell anyone who you are or make your Mumsnet username known (although your friends may guess at your identity if you make it obvious in the thread).

If you can't see the link to the thread on your profile, you probably didn't click 'share' on the share box so the link was probably never made.

It is /technically/ possible that Mumsnet's techy staff could perhaps follow this link to see what your Facebook profile is - but very they probably won't. Unless you have a stalker who happens to work for Mumsnet, I would not be concerned.

Bear in mind the admin of ANY website you visit can see your IP address, work out your general geographic location and see what search terms you used to find their website and/or the websites which took you to their website, as well as the website you visit directly AFTER visiting their website. Plus more info. No, there isn't a lot of privacy on the internet, but generally the people who see all this info about you aren't the people who know you personally.

whomovedmychocolate · 01/05/2010 06:39

Nothing is anonymous on the web. Where on earth do people get the idea it is? That's why you can namechange.

If you are really, really concerned about this. take appropriate steps to mitigate (log out of each and every site, delete posting history, post misinformation, use an anonymiser service etc.). Also don't use social networking if you are concerned about privacy.

It is possible to disappear, and dissociate quite easily, but you have to do it regularly.

CarmenSanDiego · 01/05/2010 06:53

WMMC, I loled at your 'life of Riley' gag in your profile

ditavionteased · 01/05/2010 07:02

wmmc, had to look at your propfile after the last comment and now I hate you, you are gorgeous and your house is beautiful and I am quite which is not like me.

ditavionteased · 01/05/2010 07:05

oh and sorry no comment op, I know nothing of the tech world but would think facebook is not a good idea if you nbeed to keep annonymous, btw I log out at every visit and it took me to my page.

TheBossofMe · 01/05/2010 07:05

mmrbonbon, I think you think that a link exists that doesn't, IFSWIM. The link is only on your own pc, and is easy to remove if you disable cookies on your pc. Can help you do this if you want. It means you will have to relog into MN and FB every time you use them, but removes the security fear you are concerned about. Shout if you want some help in how to disable cookies.

whomovedmychocolate · 01/05/2010 07:11

dita - green is a pretty colour

Shaz10 · 01/05/2010 07:14

Just log out of facebook.

TheBossofMe · 01/05/2010 07:17

Shaz - if you truly want to be safe, logging out isn't enough, you have to disable cookies. Otherwise, it is easy for anyone who wants to to find you MN name/password from your cookies on your PC (note, only if they have access to your PC).

twoisplenty · 01/05/2010 07:25

Sorry for being a bit obvious, but if you want to be anonymous, why are you on the world wide web? Why FB? The whole world can see you!

FrazzleRock · 01/05/2010 07:31

But even if you click on the FB link, it won't put a link onto your FB page unless you press "post". There is a "Cancel" button.....

Chiiiiiillllll

fidelma · 01/05/2010 07:42

mmbb I think you have gone.I want to see your house!!!!

have you not just told us who you are with that times link?

I wasn't interested but now I am nosey.(sorry)

Can you delete your fb page?

Rindercella · 01/05/2010 08:17

dita, knowing wwmc in RL (arrggghhh - the internet and RL crossing over ) I can confirm that she is indeed gorgeous and her house is quite lovely!

mmrbonbon, I had not a clue what you were on about earlier on but if you are logged on to Facebook and you click a link to it then of course it is going to take you to your FB homepage. If you click on a FB icon which says 'share this thread on Facebook' then of course there will be a link between your MN and FB identities.

Tee2072 · 01/05/2010 08:49

OH FFS!

If you are going to use the internet, you really should learn how it works.

The only person going to your Facebook page when that link is clicked is you. When I click the link I go to my Facebook page.

And I will second, third and fourth WWMC. Nothing on the 'net is private. You are kidding yourself if you think you are not findable 100000 different ways. Even if you name change here at MN Daily.

Remember, MN is completely searchable by Google. And they own every post on here. Read the Terms and Conditions.

Perhaps, OP, you should go live in a cave. Then the world would never find you.

BTW do you leave your house with a bag over your head? Because, you know, people can see you in real life as well.

lowenergylightbulb · 01/05/2010 08:53

It's just a link to facebook from this thread. The only way that anyone could possibly link your MN account to your FB one is if YOU decided to post a link to this thread on your facebook page and said 'look at this thread on mumsnet that I started'
