OP, don't panic. As others have said, it is not linking everyone to your facebook when they click on the f by your name.

I just clicked on the F by your name.

It went to a facebook page with a link to this thread. it had the option to share. therefore putting this thread on my facebook.

I didn't see your page. It didn't link me to you. It linked this mumsnet thread to me.

So when you clicked, it linked this mumsnet thread to you.

Click on the f by my name.

You'll see that you can't access my fb

Which wouldn't matter anyway, cos it's a fake one only set up so I can access facebook when people go "OH MY GOD look at this on facebook, I'm so angry..."

JustMyTwoPenceWorth · 01/05/2010 09:07

Oh, am I right in thinking that you are also saying the fact that it can link you to your facebook page is why you are de-regging?

That's just a cookie. Every website you visit puts them on. Every page you click on. So really, you're tracked by every single site you visit. Go to Tools and find clear cookies. You'll have to do that after every visit to the internet.

YABU
chill the fuck out

MortaIWombat · 01/05/2010 09:21

Is this whole thread an elaborate push for "Erasing David"? Cos I was going to see it anyway, y'know.

whomovedmychocolate · 01/05/2010 09:56

The other thing is....you don't have to post to link it to you Facebook account. If I decided to post a link from a vague thread to my FB you might assume I was on that thread, but I may not be. So even if there was a link it did not infer a connection with the person whose facebook account it appeared on.

Bumperliouzzzzzz · 01/05/2010 10:41

Blimey - bit of an overreaction OP! Agree with the sensible people on here who have explained things proper.

wasmmrbonbon · 01/05/2010 12:33

i just reregistered briefly to say thank you to Carmen and others who tried to help.

By clicking on that fb link when I was logged in (I suppose I was curious about what would happen and thought it might take me to the mn group or something) I've created an undeletable piece of electronic history, a record that links my anonymous persona on here to the real me. It's not just on my pc. I never had a link before, I never shared, never linked to any other site, it was all at maximum privacy. No personal data on there to be picked up and shared.

We all know how loose fb's respect for privacy is: it's already found my school and university though I've never even searched them on there. Nothing I can do now changes that link I've unwittingly created, no matter how many cookies I delete, or forums I deregister from.

I don't like that, much in the way I don't want Tescos emailing me when my period is due because Tampax are on special offer. Yes I was stupid to click on it, and I didn't realise it would make that pathway. It's not exactly made clear. I didn't know that would happen because I'm no expert, I'm just usually pretty careful.

So anyway, thanks to those with helpful suggestions. Bye.

YANBU

Tee2072 · 01/05/2010 12:36

Wasmrbonbon, if you did not then click 'share' after you clicked the link, then you have not made any sort of link between your FB page and MN AT ALL!!!!

Kaloki · 01/05/2010 12:37

hands over a tin foil hat

How very strange.

Yes I have Tee. That's how lots of websites work. They record where the clicks come from, save it and use it. I have to agree with WMMC on that. It's got nothing to do with me clicking share. In effect, I agreed to share when I clicked on the link being logged into fb. Really am off now.

MamaLazarou · 01/05/2010 12:44

YABU, and slightly potty.

auntyviral · 01/05/2010 12:46

you'd think they would ASK

Kaloki · 01/05/2010 12:46

"Yes I have Tee. That's how lots of websites work. They record where the clicks come from, save it and use it."

They save it on your computer for the most part. Not accessible by anyone but you and the websites that you have allowed access. Please do some research on cookies.

ICouldHaveWrittenThis · 01/05/2010 12:55

just de-reg and delete your cookies, you looon!

Tee2072 · 01/05/2010 15:22

::continues to make and pass out tin foil hats::

Thank you Kaloki. That's what I was going to say.

CarmenSanDiego · 01/05/2010 15:39

Hang on... If you're using the same internet connection to access both Facebook and Mumsnet, there already IS electronic data linking you to them both - your IP provider will have it and be aware of it.

If you ever visit Facebook immediately before or after Mumsnet, then the admin of Facebook and the admin of Mumsnet will have access to such a link.

The thing is, NO-ONE else will have a link (no google indexing etc.) unless you clicked the 'F' button and confirmed 'Share' on the share box that pops up. If you did that, you were a bit silly really, because it does ask for your confirmation and you can see quite clearly it will post on your wall. Even so, if you deleted it fast, it probably won't have been indexed.

Kaloki · 01/05/2010 15:45

"If you ever visit Facebook immediately before or after Mumsnet, then the admin of Facebook and the admin of Mumsnet will have access to such a link."

True, the only way to not have any data stored anywhere about your browsing habits is to either use a different computer to visit every single website, or to not use the net.

And the ones that are retaining info on your habits aren't actually keeping it on you just on trends. Eg. I know that most of the links to my personal website came from MySpace, I have no idea who came over from MySpace, I just know that a certain number of links were clicked through.

Noone is spying on you, you just aren't that important, sorry to say.

juneybean · 01/05/2010 15:50

PML at this thread....crikey!

runnybottom · 01/05/2010 15:51

I'd start covering your windows with tin foil OP, they're all watching you, y'know.

Kaloki · 01/05/2010 15:52

In other news MNHQ knows all your addresses and will be visiting to peer round your windows, take notes and sell them to The Man.

Tee2072 · 01/05/2010 15:57

Don't forget, Kaloki, that when you leave your house? The world can see your face!!! And your children's faces!!!!!!!!

::goes back to making tin foil hats::

Kaloki · 01/05/2010 16:03

We should go into Tin Foil Hat making business Tee! We could make a fortune, we'd have to deliver them in brown paper parcels though, and have a secret door knock and handshake, maybe a password too.

Tee2072 · 01/05/2010 16:07

Oooh, excellent idea Kaloki!!

What shall we call the business?
