It's odd isn't it?
Meet Anna, Alan and Aliteration.
Why?

I think two is probably fine, and looks like you just happened to like two names starting with that letter. Three looks contrived, obviously. I wouldn't judge anyone for doing it, or think they were wrong to do it. I just wouldn't do it myself.

toccatanfudge · 26/04/2010 14:35

DS3 would have been Alexis Yananai if he'd been a girl though - wouldn't have been anther T...

Birdly · 26/04/2010 14:36

Both my DC have the same initial. At the time, we simply went with the name we liked best for DS2, and it was only after the post-birth haze cleared that we realised properly that their names started with the same letter!

Doesn't cause any problems tho.

crumpette · 26/04/2010 14:37

toccata- are those really your DCs names? I love them!

mrsruffallo · 26/04/2010 14:37

It just seems weird to me..lack of imagination perhaps or just quite twee?

Dh named our first two daughters in time-honoured fashion after girls he fancied at school - they happened to have the same initial. I named 3 and 4 - they also share an initial. I don't think it will be confusing, they all have middle names.

ShadeofViolet · 26/04/2010 14:38

I dont think children with the same initial is too bad, but I agree with megonthemoon about matching names.

And names with themes (Yes you Jamie and Jools)

toccatanfudge · 26/04/2010 14:41

crumpette - yes they really are my DS's names

Rockbird · 26/04/2010 14:41

I think those names knock all the Olivias and Bens into a cocked hat (no offence).

I didn't know you were QoQ as well!

uggmum · 26/04/2010 14:42

Both my dc have first names that start with the same letter. I can honestly say, it never occurred to me at the time. I loved Harriet as a girls name and the only boys name I liked at the time was Henry.

crumpette · 26/04/2010 14:42

they're lovely!

123andaway · 26/04/2010 14:42

One of the parents at school has Emma and Gemma - how confusing must that be!!

I think rhyming is awful but alliteration is OK in small doses, I mean DD had an L name and I like other names starting with L and DS has a J name and I like other names starting with J, as long as it's not intentional (ie only calling DC a certain name because of the initial) and does not exceed a certain number in the style of mad US family, it's fine

NorbertDentressangle · 26/04/2010 14:52

I think first letter is fine if, like Toccata's DSs the following letters vary but I once worked with a family with names along the lines of:

Shania
Shantelle
Shane
Shannon

which I thought was a bit much - 4 DC with the same first 4 letters to their name.

(I've changed the names slighly just in case !)

horridhobo · 26/04/2010 14:55

Sounds fairly twee and contrived to me, but no biggie......I know a family at dc's school who have named their 5 children after themselves. Eldest boy has dad's name, eldest girl mum's, then next boy dad's middle name etc. They must be running out of names now.....not sure how they managed with youngest boy! They are an odd family anyway who have very little contact with anyone else, so the whole thing just seems....weird.

NorbertDentressangle · 26/04/2010 14:56

Pressed post too soon there as I meant to add that I'm not keen on rhyming names.

DDs good friends with a girl whose name rhymes with DDs name. Its a bit weird when I pick them up from an activity they both go to every week and have to say "come on Molly and Polly". People presume they are both my DDs and I've deliberately named them like that

(again -names changed !)

toccatanfudge · 26/04/2010 14:56

I have been known to shout for "Tee-Taa-Tong" before now

shelleylou · 26/04/2010 14:58

My brother and 1 have the same initial. It was never done deliberately my parents just loved the names and thought they suited us/ Youngest DB has a different initial and no1 has ever commented on it partly as we've all got our own personalities and all of us are refered to as nicknames with only DB's starting with their initial

canella · 26/04/2010 15:01

our neighbours kids are called jannika and annika!!! not right!

SoMuchToBits · 26/04/2010 15:02

I think it's particularly bad if you have twins/triplets, as happened in our family. My older sister, my twin sister and myself all have names beginning with the same letter. It's not so bad having the same initial as my older sister, but with twins its awful, especially if you are identical.

Lots of people can't be bothered to tell you apart anyway, and having alliterative names is no help whatsoever.

toccatanfudge · 26/04/2010 15:02

my first long term boyfriend was called Ben..........my dad is Bill............I think he was rather pleased it never lasted don't think he fancied "bill and ben" retorts for ever more

notso · 26/04/2010 15:05

I know a family with 5 girls who's names begin with Z, which is a bit much, the youngest sounds like they were scraping the barrel.
I suppose if you've done it three times you feel obliged to carry on.
I find matching names a bit try hard, I know twins called Noel and Leon.

If DS had been a girl we would have had two M names and Dh's name begins with M but we just liked those name.

lefroglet · 26/04/2010 15:06

My DB and I have the same initial for our first name, but different for second names. Also, it's not the same sound (Gem & Greg). My DH's immediate family were all D.J.'s, and so is my DS. If I have another DS he will also be a D.J. I managed to veto the idea of DS being named after DH and grandad as I am of the opinion that it is my DH's name and his alone IYSWIM. I have never really thought that much about it in regards to my DH's family and other families I know who have done it

BexJ78 · 26/04/2010 15:10

we only have one DD, but if we have another Dc and it's a boy, we like a name that starts with the same letter. I did wonder though if it would be a bit poncy if we went down that path, but hey, who cares.

Just on the subject of parents naming their child after them, i must admit, i don't really like it... My DH is named after his father and in his family, there are about three names which DH, his brothers, cousins and uncles all share. We often joke, him included, that if were at a family party and you shouted one or the other of the 'chosen' names, about 5 people would look up!
