Get one. I think if you run them full etc not too dreadful and frankly Worth It.

You could argue that if you let the machine stack up and only use it once every few days when full then it will be more green than kep running hot water to do washing up every meal time.I'm probably making that fact up though

YANBU I love my Dish washer. I believe they actually use less water. Just costs more to buy the tablets than washing up liquid!

YANBU. I've just had to get rid of mine as my new house's kitchen is too small to accomodate it. God I miss it! I spend way too much time washing up and I'm fed up with it already, just 2 weeks into our move, despite living in a lovely house in an idyllic village.

If your DH won't budge from his stance buy him a pair of Marigolds and put your feet up whilst he uses them!

Indeed. I only got one a few years ago when the kitchen was redone and would not be parted from it now. Just get online and get it ordered.

Could you compromise and get a second-hand one? It's the manufacturing of them that's un-green; they can be quite economical in water and energy.

Actually, I'd get one anyway.

We just got one after 10 years of me doing the dishes and it is the most freeing feeling I have had, (I am so pathetic but I just don't care)

I heard some report that dishwashers are more environmentally friendly than hand washing as you tend to use it once per day or less while some people wash up 2 - 3 times per day.

I'm sure they're not that environmentally unfriendly as long as it's fully loaded.

Go on washing up strike so that your DH can see how long you spend at the kitcken sink every day!

Just go and get one. It will change your life. People do not wash clothes much by hand anymore - same with dishes. As long as it is completley full every time it is used the energy/water use is almost no difference betwene a dishwasher and washing by hand.

Really if DH wants to save the planet, he can fit the house with insulation, a solar panel, stop driving, make sure every electrical item is switched off every night.

Get the most energy efficient one you can, your dh can prove his green credentials by handwashing the stuff when he wants to, otherwise the machine gets to do it

Having a dishwasher will give you loads more time (to do environmentally friendly things) and I have also read about them using far less water than when someone washes up by hand frequently during the day.
Does your DP do all the washing up at the moment, may I ask?

Dilemma - ours is v.economical and uses only 16 litres of water to do it's whole wash. When you consider that it will hold an entire day's washing up where you might use 3/4 bowls of water to do it by hand, much better to use the dishwasher.
No running gallons down the sink while you wait for the hot to come through.
V.good if you are ill because it gets everything sterile.

If he barely does the washing up then he has no say - just order one and organise a plumber!

Seriously though, my DH is very eco-minded and he did his research and insisted we got one.

mine is second hand! much greener you use less water, less detergent and less energy and you dishes are much cleaner.
