in not tipping hairdresser?

brimfull · 22/04/2010 15:12

had highlights and cut and blowjob
came to mega £££

I found it really awkward when she took me to the reception to pay , receptionist dealt with the payment while she just stood there
it was obvious she was waiting for tip

all I had was a tenner so didn't give anything

left feeling like they were about to roll their eyes at 'tight bitch'

not my normal hairdresser btw

A blowjob at the hairdressers??!! Where is it and do they have a long waiting list?!!

But assuming that was a spelling mistake I think YANBU because I don't tip mine either.

TBH these days haircuts/colours etc are so expensive that I can only afford to have one of those every three months and couldn't afford to tip aswell! I will occasionally give a tip when I have my Xmas cut though!

OTTMummA · 22/04/2010 15:19

if you feel like you paid over the odds for it then no, don't tip.
however if i think they have done a good job and paid me some attention etc or a good deal money wise i always tip a fiver or so.

i always make a trip to the newsagents etc before had so ive got loose change or a fiver.

but YANBU if you didn't want to.

KAEKAE · 22/04/2010 15:19

I don't tip either, I gave up on that one a while ago. I have hightlights and a cut and the prices are getting way beyond a joke so no I don't think you are being unreasonable.

I had a mobile hairdresser do my hair today and I didn't tip her, it cost me £80 which is cheap compaired to salon prices.

Jackstini · 22/04/2010 15:19

Depends.
Did you ask how much it would be before you booked or was it a shock?
If you were really happy with the outcome and are planning going there again I would have tipped - worth it to ensure she does a good job next time!
If you are never going back and didn't like it then no, YANBU

nomorecake · 22/04/2010 15:20

blowjob!

doggiesayswoof · 22/04/2010 15:26

Up to you, so YANBU

BUT I always either get change beforehand or tell them to add £5 or so to the machine and put it on my card - or they will give you change of a tenner

I think the argument that it costs too much so you can't tip doesn't really hold water tbh

They way I look at it, if it costs a packet anyway and they do a good job then what's another few quid to me? I am not loaded by any means but a decent haircut is in my budget every two months. And the stylists are quite poorly paid and they do not set the prices so not their fault - they depend on tips to supplement the crap wages a lot of the time

But then I heart my hairdresser and I might not feel the same if it wasn't my usual one

Psammead · 22/04/2010 15:26

Yeah, what nomorecake said...

Hairdressers are really expensive though - I don't always tip. Only when they have done a really good job.

doggiesayswoof · 22/04/2010 15:28

Mind you I hate feeling pressurised to tip - that sucks - she shouldn't have hung around waiting imo

AbsOfCroissant · 22/04/2010 15:30

Depends, did you have a "happy ending" or not

snigger blowjob.

pagwatch · 22/04/2010 15:31

at blowjob

The girl gave you a blowjob. If you weren't prepared to give her a tip you should at least offered a few kind words of encouragement

Clumsymum · 22/04/2010 15:32

If My hair is done by the guy who owns the salon, then no I don't tip. BUT I do give £2 or £3 to the junior who washed it, stood passing colour solution to him, and got sent to get me cups of tea etc.

If the stylist who doesn't own the salon does my cut'n'colour, then yes I tip her too no more than £5 tho'.

Psammead · 22/04/2010 15:33

Shhh, pagwatch you'll make me wake my baby up.

pagwatch · 22/04/2010 15:39

Thank you ggirl. made me laugh

Psammead · 22/04/2010 15:41

This thread would go nicely with the one where the woman put seamen in their DC's hair...

WHY is this so funny? Did I suddenly become a teenager again?

pingviner · 22/04/2010 15:41

its like the guy who circumcised elephants for a living...
apparently the pay is not great but the tips are enormous

sorry,
still pmsl...

redredruby · 22/04/2010 15:47

I don't know if I have missed something but tipping a hairdresser has never occured to me! I guess they are in the 'service industry' but the only people I have ever tipped are waiters. Personally I would rather they were paid a proper wage than reliant upon tips - and happy for that wage to be reflected in the prices.

So....erm - you are NBU but I am not entirely sure why I make this assumption.

pagwatch · 22/04/2010 15:49

ROFL at ping

doggiesayswoof · 22/04/2010 15:51

ping

boom boom

VoilaAnotherGimlet · 22/04/2010 15:54

I don't tip either - it feels a bit patronising to tip a professional. And what ruby said.

@ ping

lovechoc · 22/04/2010 16:05

I don't tip - it's expensive enough!!

MrsC2010 · 22/04/2010 16:07

I do if I have change, otherwise I don't and I don't feel that bad!

booyhoo · 22/04/2010 16:13

i tip if i feel i have had good service, a good haircut friendly stylist.

GetOrfMoiLand · 22/04/2010 16:16

I tip a fiver. Always make sure I have enough change.
However I don't feel any shame in not tipping if the stylist is up herself.

SuSylvester · 22/04/2010 16:17

god not this thread again

SuSylvester · 22/04/2010 16:18
