I think this is already happening in the uk?

StrawberriesAndCherries · 13/04/2010 19:44

no point - talking on a non-handsfree mobile was banned ages ago and still people do it. Unenforcable though I would support it personally

sparkle12mar08 · 13/04/2010 19:54

It's already covered under "being in control of a vehicle" I suspect.

just don't eat the biscuit whist driving

pjmama · 13/04/2010 22:37

If it's illegal to eat, drink or use a mobile phone while driving, then why should smoking be exempt? Surely rummaging in your handbag for fags and lighter, manhandling one out of the packet one-handed and lighting it takes just as much of your attention away from the road? Does anyone know if the existing law does already cover smoking? I can't imagine it's enforced much if it is anyway.

kreecherlivesupstairs · 14/04/2010 08:00

pjmama, you are clearly not a smoker. You don't need to rummage in your bag for fags and lighter, you get your dd to spark one up for you.
YABVU by the way.

Dogandbone · 14/04/2010 08:40

ho ho kreecher

radiohelen · 14/04/2010 08:57

YANBU.... how can anyone argue that holding a burning stick while driving is not dangerous? Eating, drinking, talking on the phone - all these things are considered to make your driving unsafe so adding fire to the mix is IMHO just about as unsafe as it can get.
Boo hoo, the poor smokers will have to stop the car and get out to have a fag - shame! Lorry drivers have to do it if they use shared vehicles and if you are a parent who smokes while in the car then frankly you are putting your kids in double danger - once from careless driving, then again from inhaling your smoke.
I'd prosecute you!

claig · 14/04/2010 08:58

YABU. Why not propose a ban on breathing while driving as well while you are at it?

ooojimaflip · 14/04/2010 09:04

Claig - that's just silly , everyone would crash when they passed out.

claig · 14/04/2010 10:58

of course it's silly, that's why they will be implementing it soon. It fits in with getting us off the roads, either by fining us, banning us or increasing our petrol prices and car taxes. You will be able to smoke as many fags as you like while you walk home up the hill carrying your heavy shopping bags.

2shoes · 14/04/2010 11:03

if we are talking distractions.........what about children they are the worst.
thsy should be banned from cars

ooojimaflip · 14/04/2010 11:04

Claig - that sounds a very good idea.

claig · 14/04/2010 11:08

ooojimaflip, I thought you'd like it

2shoes, please don't give them any more ideas, that's just the sort of stuff they love to hear about

claw3 · 14/04/2010 11:10

Not much point stopping parents from smoking in their cars with children, unless you also ban smoking in your own home.

ooojimaflip · 14/04/2010 11:32

Claig - it will get people to perfect the important skill of smoking a fag with both your hands full without getting smoke in your eyes. I never mastered this back when I smoked.

claig · 14/04/2010 11:50

I think you are right, it will be another great revenue earner as those who have not mastered the art will be fined until they pass the required standard, and the bar will be set increasingly higher to maximise revenue.

ooojimaflip · 14/04/2010 12:16

And what with all the smoking inspectors we will reduce unemployment too!

claig · 14/04/2010 12:26

true, except this is the usual nonproductive Labour type employment. We need wealth creating private enterprise, not more Labour style inspectors, busybodies and jobsworths.

ooojimaflip · 14/04/2010 13:04

Outsource the inspectors then.

ooojimaflip · 14/04/2010 13:04

They could be like those other heroes of Enterprise - clampers.

HoppingHeather · 14/04/2010 13:08

We should mandate that all cars contain smoke sensors that cut the engine if activated, that'll stop these bastards enjoying a quiet fag in the privacy of their own vehicle.
