Every time I make a coffee for my mum she leaves a small amount in the bottom. I noticed after the first few times I put it in the dishwasher without noticing! It literally is every time.
With real coffee the last little bit can be full of grounds/very thick but this is instant! I realised my aunt (her sister) does it too the other day - is it just them or do they know something I don't?

I do that - tis always too cold by the time I get to the bottom.

KathKa · 09/04/2010 14:16

I always do this too, with tea or coffee

Tis very annoying apparently (so my dh tells me when he splashes his feet loading the dishwasher!)

No idea why, it's not a conscious thing

StealthPolarBear · 09/04/2010 14:16

ah now i thought of that, but surely if that was the case the amount should vary? on hte days she runs off & plays with DS half way through there'd be more, and when she sits and drinks it in one go she should finish it?

Do they put 3 sugars in but not stir it as they don't want it too sweet? I equally don't get it, but I suppose if they mostly drink real coffee it's become automatic and they don't really think about it...

breastfeedingquestion · 09/04/2010 14:17

Hate it when people do this at my house too. I always pick it up not very carefully and slop it over our cream carpet as am just not familiar with the concept of wasting tea. I will still drink it if it's cold!

KathKa · 09/04/2010 14:19

If I'm at someone elses house I rinse my cup out

Think it must be some childhood hang up - I always have to eat my food by category too

Fliight · 09/04/2010 14:21

It's because in the OLD days there would always be leaves or something at the bottom. Or scale, or crumbs...everything sinks.

Anyway if you drink the last half centimetre you risk ceramic poisoning.

StealthPolarBear · 09/04/2010 14:22

lol no,. no sugar, not sure about aunt but mum generally drinks instant during the day

OP posts:
vinhotinto · 09/04/2010 14:23

I do it with tea and coffee out of habit. My gran used to make tea with leaves and not use a strainer so I got used to leaving a bit at the bottom.

StealthPolarBear · 09/04/2010 14:23

lol at the old days - mum's in her early 50s, aunt is 49

OP posts:
StealthPolarBear · 09/04/2010 14:24

well it would seem to be habit then
I'm the same as bq - heat up cups that are a third full and cold in the microwave

OP posts:
5DollarShake · 09/04/2010 14:24

I almost always leave some as it is too cold by then.

Odd that it is always the same amount she leaves, though.

WebDude · 09/04/2010 14:26

re ceramic poisoning... not if you have a glass cup!

OP - Why not use a glass cup some day, and ask why she left the last bit of her coffee! (As if you have only just noticed!)

When your aunt does the same another day, you can laugh, and say, "Oh, you're just like Mum - she left the last bit too!" and see what reaction it gets. (Vice versa if the aunt visits first.)

StealthPolarBear · 09/04/2010 14:28

ceramic poisoning??!
WD she would take it as a criticism - we are very touchy in my family

OP posts:
Fliight · 09/04/2010 14:28

Ceramic poisoning isn't real, Webdude. I was joking. It's Ok.

ASecretLemonadeDrinker · 09/04/2010 14:28

'cos that's where my biscuit is

junkcollector · 09/04/2010 14:28

My dad does this AND when we were little and you were allowed to smoke in the house, he used to put his fag end out in it! Blurghghghghghgghgggh

StealthPolarBear · 09/04/2010 14:28

plus by the time i noticed aunt's i was in the kitchen - i think going back through & asking might have seemed confrontational!

OP posts:
StealthPolarBear · 09/04/2010 14:30

lemonade, you're not right in my mum's case but i've just realised i do it too if i've dipped

OP posts:
MamaChris · 09/04/2010 14:30

Oh, dp does this too. SOOO annoying. And not just coffee - tea, wine, juice... says the "bad stuff" falls to the bottom so it shouldn't be drunk

Tiredmumno1 · 09/04/2010 14:31

I am useless when it comes to tea, i love a good cuppa, but usually get distracted by the kids. so when i come back to my half empty cup it's cold (yuck). so i have started making my self half a cup, and still leave a tiny bit, i think its just a bad habit sometimes

vinhotinto · 09/04/2010 14:31

Oh the memories of drinking the last bit of tea and having a mouthful of leaves, horrible. Just looked in my coffee (instant) mug on desk and I have done it again.
In my defense I do rinse my own cup.

upahill · 09/04/2010 14:32

Oh God!!! I do this. I drive everyone mad with it. I'll ask Dh to make me a fresh brew and he'll look in my cup and say you haven't finished this one yet.
The caretaker at work will go to pick up cups and say 'Oh you haven't finished' I've had to for shame drink the last bit then!!

I've been doing it for over 35 years so I'm not going to change now!!!

Tiredmumno1 · 09/04/2010 14:33

I was gonna ask if ceramic poisoning was real. dont i feel like a plum

juneybean · 09/04/2010 14:34

I do this but usually because I'm sick of it by then.

It could be a high percentage of saliva by then as well lol
