smoking in a kids playground/area?

carocaro · 08/04/2010 17:26

Three times over the Easter holidays in three different places, all women.

Why?

We can smell it eg: breathe it in. It makes no difference that you are outside.

I told one woman off as he flicked fag ash landed on my sons coat.

From now on I am going to take out cubed smelly blue cheese and throw it chunk by chunk at a smoker in a playground, they are infecting my atmosphere so I will infect theirs.

annoying tho completely legal.

Pozzled · 08/04/2010 17:33

We had this issue on a thread a little while ago. I'm in complete agreement with you, it's unnecessary and doesn't take much to walk a little way off. But loads of people last time thought that the person had every right to smoke in that environment.

sixlostmonkeys · 08/04/2010 17:33

tsk ..know what you mean- playground near me is near a main road and not one of the cars that goes by turns the engine off to stop all that nasty exhaust infecting my atmosphere....

"doesn't take much to walk a little way off"

So why didn't you?

Throwing cheese at someone would be an escalation, but you are allowed to eat it and stink of it and no one can stop you going into children's play areas.

You can even stand there eating a pork sandwich which would be offensive to some.

We have these things calls laws which define which things are enough of an infringement of your personal freedom to be banned and which things would be an infringement of someone else's personal freedom to ban. We decided smoking outside was one that isn't banned so you just have to get over it.

emsyj · 08/04/2010 17:43

I think smoking in a children's playground is gross and antisocial. Let's face it, the 'outdoors' isn't equipped with a giant magical extractor fan - most of the time, the fag stink is just as intrusive and noticeable outside as it would be indoors, and if an area has been designated for children to play in, it would be appropriate IMO to avoid smoking there as there will obviously be children playing and other parents sitting within a short distance so as to supervise them.

Veh bored with the whole 'smokers have rights too' argument, which doesn't hold much water as far as I'm concerned. Also with the comparison of fag smoke to exhaust fumes. Yes, traffic fumes are smelly and unpleasant, but cars at least have some social utility whereas smoking is just a bad habit.

Have to abandon this thread now as bound to degenerate into arguments.

4madboys · 08/04/2010 17:43

as an on/off smoker myself, currently OFF as i am preg! i agree that it is a bit antisocial, i would smoke when i take my kids to the playground but always stood outside the playground or far enough away from any children so that the smoke wouldnt affect them. i certainly wouldnt sit on the slide or near any play equipment and smoke, most parks are big enough that its not hard to move away from any children.

tis always slightly annoying tho when i go and sit on the bench away from the kids and have a crafty fag and someone comes and sits down next to me and then starts moaning about the smoke!! well you came and sat next to me when you could see quite clearly that i was having a fag!!

Confuzzeled · 08/04/2010 17:56

I'm an ex-smoker now but when I did smoke I would try and stand away from people in general. Not always possible but I kept my anti-social habit to myself.

I would NEVER have smoked in a playground. I did however smoke while standing outside the playground but within distance to watch my nephew playing. It's just being polite and considerate to people no matter their age.

I used to roll my own and people would look at me like I was rolling joints, not only was I smoker but a druggy as well....dah dah daaaahhhhh.

onagar · 08/04/2010 17:58

"Veh bored with the whole 'smokers have rights too' argument, which doesn't hold much water as far as I'm concerned."

Yes rights for other people is such an inconvenience isn't it. There should only be rights for you.

CoupleofKooks · 08/04/2010 18:05

if it means they aren't indoors breathing smoke over their children i am all for it
of course it isn't so bad outside - i think people have forgotten what it's like to actually sit in an enclosed space with someone who is smoking - you come out stinking of it, there would be no way you'd come home from a playground stinking of smoke

4madboys · 08/04/2010 18:11

confuzzled, when i smoke i roll my own as well andyes you do get the are you a druggie looks

juicy12 · 08/04/2010 18:11

I don't like it particularly, and as an ex-smoker, can't understand why someone can't wait. Doesn't bother me that much, though, and certainly annoy me as much as people letting their dogs into the enclosed play areas.

desperatelylackinglibido · 08/04/2010 18:12

Exactly - outside is much different to inside and really, OP, why didn't you just walk a few feet away or ask the terrible smokers to?

By the way, don't smoke myself (hate it) but think this reaction is very OTT

emsyj · 08/04/2010 18:12

Quote: "Yes rights for other people is such an inconvenience isn't it. There should only be rights for you. "

Rights are fine as long as they don't impinge on OTHER people's rights - such as their right not to stink of fags or suffer lung damage. Do I have a 'right' to poke people who annoy me in the eye? Sadly not, because it might injure them and they may well find it offensive. Same goes for smoking IMO. It affects others, so you should do it in a place where other people don't have to suffer its ill effects. Simples.

desperatelylackinglibido · 08/04/2010 18:15

Lung damage from standing near someone smoking in a park? Are you serious? Or just very delicate?

MoreCrackThanHarlem · 08/04/2010 18:16

'You can even stand there eating a pork sandwich which would be offensive to some.'

pork sandwich won't burn my dd's cheek as she runs past, will it?

don't care if it's legal
so is spitting and eating bogeys
both grotty habits

desperatelylackinglibido · 08/04/2010 18:18

She needs to watch where she's going then!

I really think that line of argument is a bit limp, don't you think.

MrsForHowLong · 08/04/2010 18:18

Of course it's good for children to see adults smoke in a playground, it'll give them tips on how to do it when they're older. Smoking around children is practically encouraging them to do it and disgusting, I am always when people defend it. Personally I look very far down my nose at people who smoke around children, I usually think rough and yucky weak addict.

The car and smoking argument is boring and wrong, the comparison is ridiculous....

emsyj · 08/04/2010 18:21

Not actually that worried about lung damage tbh, although yes since you ask I AM rather delicate... More concerned about having to wash my hair and clothes as the smell makes me . Best thing about smoking ban is not having to come home from a night out and hop in the shower before bed so as to avoid smoky pillow. I grew up in a house with 2 40 a day smoker parents (although they did give up eventually for financial rather than health reasons) and I still can't stand it to this day - the sight of a pack of fags makes me bristle.

xkaylax · 08/04/2010 18:24

i know its disgusting

xkaylax · 08/04/2010 18:24

i know its disgusting

desperatelylackinglibido · 08/04/2010 18:24

But surely the smell from cigarettes outside wouldn't be equal to the smell you may, and I mean MAY, get from being close to someone in a park? In fact, if the smell from cigarettes clings to you and affects you that much you must rarely leave the house!

I agree it's horrible but I do also think that the line of thought in this thread is more than a little precious.

I just wish people could have a little more self respect and be honest.

Why can't people just be adult and say yes, smoking in a children's playground is a really pants thing to do. But I am so desperate for a fag that I am going to carry on doing it.

The op is not raving about people smoking outside just anywhere. We're talking about a playspace for children.

Rest assured all you playground smokers, you are being massively judged, even by the people who appear not to have noticed.
