smoking in a kids playground/area?

Three times over the Easter holidays in three different places, all women.

Why?

We can smell it eg: breathe it in. It makes no difference that you are outside.

I told one woman off as he flicked fag ash landed on my sons coat.

From now on I am going to take out cubed smelly blue cheese and throw it chunk by chunk at a smoker in a playground, they are infecting my atmosphere so I will infect theirs.

Not quite thesunshinesbrightly. Pretty soon there will be more restrictions on smoking outside too, thank god!

thesunshinesbrightly · 09/04/2010 10:27

Shouldn't think alot of people will listen to that but hey if it give's you more comfort, thinking it, carry on

BattyKoda · 09/04/2010 10:29

Gave me more comfort when it was banned from indoor public places. Outdoor will soon follow (bus stops already I believe?)

MoreCrackThanHarlem · 09/04/2010 10:30

Funny how you assume that only non smokers have an issue with smoking in a playground

I smoke
never near my child or anyone elses
my dd does not know I smoke
it's called self control

if I can go for a day out without smoking so as not to set a bad example to my child and put her health at risk, why can't others manage an hour at a park without a fag

selfish in the extreme to imagine children should have to move away so as not to impinge on the rights of smokers

thesunshinesbrightly · 09/04/2010 10:32

How many people actually don't smoke in a bus stop and you can smoke outside, what about all you non-smoker's leaving indoor place's and all the nasty smoker's are all blowing smoke on your child, on purpose!!

So much evidence out there - I wonder why?

thesunshinesbrightly · 09/04/2010 10:41

I don't smoke in children's playground's, bus stop's etc.. i hate smoking myslef and if i could stop, i would.
Just thought i would have some fun.

MoreCrackThanHarlem · 09/04/2010 10:42

Thesunshines

I don't understand your last post
I am not a non smoker
I just don't smoke near children
especially in areas specifically designed for children

their rights take priority over mine
fgs

BattyKoda · 09/04/2010 10:47

I think thesunshine smokes something other than cigarettes.

thesunshinesbrightly · 09/04/2010 10:49

No! I do not that is slander and i would be grateful if you took that back.

Druzhok · 09/04/2010 10:50

What MoreCrackThanHarlem says, really. I don't smoke anymore, but if I did, my right to do so would be a far lower priority than my children's health.

Druzhok · 09/04/2010 10:51

And, at the risk of being really controversial ... if you hate smoking, you can stop. I've done it. It's not pleasant, but it can be done.

BattyKoda · 09/04/2010 10:51
Grin
MoreCrackThanHarlem · 09/04/2010 10:53

Seriously though

my dd is 9
I have never smoked in front of her
if we go out for the day I go without
children of smokers more likely to smoke

if you can't give up at least do it away from your children
it's about putting their needs first

Downdog · 09/04/2010 10:56

our local playgrounds are clearly marked as 'no smoking' zones. everyone ignores it - they practically use the signs to stub out their fags.

Winds me up! I hold my tounge!

BattyKoda · 09/04/2010 10:57

MoreCrack - good on you. My DP is the same, although he can't go a day if we are out, he'll sneak off to the car park. When at home, he can usually be found behind the shed

BattyKoda · 09/04/2010 10:58

Downdog - It also drives me mad when DS2 (14mo) comes trundling over will a (stubbed out) fag butt in his hand

MoreCrackThanHarlem · 09/04/2010 11:05

BattyKoda

if we are out with dh I can occasionally sneak off to the car park under the pretence of using the loo
if we are out on our own I have to go without

I hide behind the bin shed at home
tis a pain
I will give up
I just worry that I will be short tempered with dd when I do

your dp sounds like a good man
putting his dc above his need for nicotine

some people on this thread could learn a lesson from him I reckon

5Foot5 · 09/04/2010 13:47

I am with AliGrylls on this one. Do people seriously think their health is at risk from being stood near someone smoking outside for a short time? [OK the lady with the seriously asthmatic DD has a special case]

I think the main concern about smoking in a playground is the danger of burning. I agree that anyone not taking care to keep the lighted end well away from kids is careless and selfish.

But it sometimes seems on here as if smokers are the popular choice for public enemy number one!

(Non-smoker - never been a smoker)

tortoiseonthehalfshell · 09/04/2010 13:52

Well but it's a balance. I grant you, the child is only exposed to a small risk. But asking an adult to move out of the children's playground and smoke a few metres away, isn't that only a tiny teeny inconvenience? Noone is saying you shouldn't be allowed to smoke outside at all. Just not inside a small area filled with children.

If you weigh up the risk vs the inconvenience, surely common sense dictates that the smoker moves away?

(Smoker for years, would do it still except worried about smoke on clothes, not anti-smoking per se)

Sassybeast · 09/04/2010 14:00

thesunshinesbrightly and all if the other smokers - wonder if your attitude to smoking will change when you have to have someone else wipe your backside because you are too weak and breathless to do it yourself ? Or when you have to have part or all of your tongue cut out and be fed through a tube into your stomach ? Will you still be vehement about your right to smoke when that tumour finally sneaks into your carotid artery and you bleed to death whilst your partner and children wait helplessly in a hospital corridor ? Who will pick up the pieces when you die from a completely preventable disease ? Will your kids just move on and think you had an absolute right to do what you wanted ? But that won't happen to you will it ? Cos you're different from all the thousands of people who kill themselves and others with cigarette smoke every year ? You won't get ill will you ? And I'll bet you know 10 people who smoked 100 a day and lived until they hit 90? But you know 10 people who've died from inhaling vehicle fumes. So that justifies your smoking ?

bibbitybobbityhat · 09/04/2010 14:01

Good God I am not concerned about passive smoking outdoors. Of course I am quite sure that normal traffic fumes (here in London anyway) are just as bad as a few wafts of smoke in the open air.

I hate smoking in the children's play area because it looks so rough and skanky and frankly like the smokers have not one ounce of self control. I could never like or admire anyone who smoked in the playground. That is why I am judgey, not about my dc inhaling a few whiffs of cigarette smoke.

BetsyBoop · 09/04/2010 14:18

I hate stupid people smoking in children's play areas

It not because I worry about the passive smoking risk FFS, it's because it's a filthy, disgusting habit that is not appropriate to do around children.

I would be equally unimpressed with someone hanging around swigging vodka or f-ing and cussing every other word, again just unneccessary and inappropriate when small children are around.

Do people have no self control & no respect for chilren, particularly their own children?

There are also my pet hates that some smokers seem to think it's okay to hold their lit cigarette at the same height as a toddler's faces and leave their butts all over the place for inquisitive toddlers to pick up...

usualsuspect · 09/04/2010 14:20

Nowt like a smoking in the playground thread to get mn's knickers in a knot....again
