I'm engaged, but I can't bear to call my DP my fiance, I don't know why, it just makes me cringe, as it does when I hear others say it. Am I alone?

Dumbledoresgirl · 07/04/2010 09:52

How do you feel about the term "husband"?

BattyKoda · 07/04/2010 10:12

Still call him my boyfriend s'pose thats no better!Reality - does sound poncey doesn't it?!

Can't wait to call him my husband! Then I can call him hubby..... NOT!

OP posts:
Rhian82 · 07/04/2010 10:28

I called DH hubby a few times after we got married. He called me wiffy in return.

I soon stopped.

mamsnet · 07/04/2010 12:59

Hate fiancé too.. never saw any real need. He does have a name.
I've been married for almost 8 years too and don't use husband that often either.

However, I suspect you may not find that many like minded souls on here..

msrisotto · 07/04/2010 13:01

I don't see how it is poncy personally.

Trikken · 07/04/2010 13:07

I like it. It sounds special. plus you only get to use it for a little while. (In most cases anyway.)

FourEyesGood · 07/04/2010 13:45

I'm with the OP here. I too am betrothed (that one just makes me laugh), but 'fiance' makes me grimace. I have no problem at all with the term 'husband', and will use it proudly in a couple of months. I'm not keen on 'partner' either, mainly because it sounds so businesslike, but am far too old to have a 'boyfriend'.

Wanderingsheep · 07/04/2010 13:52

I don't like Fiance either. Sounds much too poncy and makes me cringe when other people say it! I never call DP Fiance but he seems too important to me for me to call him my boyfriend, iyswim.

Fimbow · 07/04/2010 13:59

Partner sets my teeth on edge too, especially when people are elderly. The lady in our local charity shop has one but refers to him as her man friend. Not sure if that is much better to be honest.

msrisotto · 07/04/2010 14:10

Man friend, pfft, man child would be more appropriate in my case.

Undercovamutha · 07/04/2010 14:12

Totally agree with you OP. I could NEVER bring myself to say the word, when we were engaged.

Tbh I felt really funny using the word 'husband' for ages after getting married as well though. And as for introducing myself as Mrs...... NO WAY!

BattyKoda · 07/04/2010 15:34

I get all tongue tied when I have to say his name when I'm talking on the phone to people about the wedding (venue/florists/etc) because I feel like I have to say fiance. Stupid really! I just can't say it without bringing up a little bit of sick!

OP posts:
BattyKoda · 07/04/2010 15:36

Rhian82 - if he calls me wiffy I might punch him in the face

Undercovamutha - I had completely forgotton that my name will change! Arggh

OP posts:
iskra · 07/04/2010 15:48

Agree with OP. I can't say it either - I have this compulsion to say "fian-saaaaaaay" for some reason. I just say partner or boyfriend. I like using boyfriend now we have a daughter together 'cause it makes me feel younger!

MPuppykin · 07/04/2010 15:55

This will completely out me if anyone here knows me in RL, but I call my DH 'the old boy'. And I call my mother 'the old bat'. All completely in love, and taken that way, tho probably does not sound like that to outsiders!

Krugerellie · 07/04/2010 15:57

I struggle with husband. Lived together for years before getting married and could just about bring myself to say partner - but husband eeeuggh! Refused to change my name as well.

MorrisZapp · 07/04/2010 16:00

Fiance is the worst word in the world. Usually spoken by shreiky teenagers and prounounced fee-ohhhn-saaaaaay, at least here in Edinburgh it is. YANBU.

(my DP is a lovely Rob too )

BattyKoda · 07/04/2010 16:10

DP says it to me sometimes, as in 'where's my gorgeous fiancee' when he gets home. That should make me feel all mushy, but instead it makes my toes curl

fee-ohhhn-saaaaay

OP posts:
JaneS · 07/04/2010 16:42

I don't like it either. Don't know why. It helps that there isn't really an equivalent term in DP's language, so he doesn't find it odd that I don't use it.

I still say 'partner', which I've found is great actually, because it doesn't result in a deluge of awkward comments about the wedding. I guess using fiance is a bit like wearing a sign saying 'ask me about my wedding plans!', and that's not my thing.

BattyKoda, how about you and I begin the crusade against annoying wedding-industry personnel and just say 'partner'?

JaneS · 07/04/2010 16:43
  • or 'boyfriend', oops, missed that post!
