to think that skinny jeans on toddlers in nappies are ridiculous

??? What is this all about? Especially as it means that they cannot climb and play unless they want to look like mermaids!

I hate character tops....eeeewwww, children need to be taught taste, no crappy character pyjamas, no awful character bedding and no fashion wear, until they're much older!!

TinaSparkles · 05/04/2010 18:15

I've had a few pairs of skinny jeans for DD, who is now 4 (and been out of nappies for a couple of years but would have worn them at some point with), all from H&M and all roomy and stretchy.

They're more dressy than the looser fit ones and I put them on her with little blouses and frilly tops if we are going to, say, a nice restaurant.

Not to look older, or shudder - sexier - just because they look more tailored and go better with the rest of her outfit.

OK on most occasions kids will want to run and jump about but there are times when they are a bit more dressed up for the sake of it. It would be stupid for her to wear them for a trip to the park, that's just impractical.

livviloo · 05/04/2010 18:18

TinaSparkles I agree. Thank you for a sensible answer. I am starting to wonder if the issue I have is more with the impractical choice of clothing and that is probably a reflection of what my kids get up to (get muddy play in garden) and SIL kid does (lives in flat goes shopping with mum in a buggy)

i think it's okay, especially as when my DS was younger he was a skinny little thing and all i could ever find were huuge trousers that he ripped constantly!

but i do always wonder how easy it is to get them off babies for nappy changing...and how do you get them on in the first place?

my DD wore leggings almost constantly, and this was 15 years ago! easy to wash, comfy, layerable

traceybath · 05/04/2010 18:24

But you see - I don't do the whole jogging bottoms thing for my dc's (2ds's and a dd).

They just wear their normal clothes, they get dirty and I wash and iron them. Be that shirts/dresses whatever.

Have never seen a baby/childs pair of jeans that they can't move properly in though.

'I hate character tops....eeeewwww, children need to be taught taste, no crappy character pyjamas, no awful character bedding and no fashion wear, until they're much older!!'

I'll never understand parents who dress their kids in Kiss and Ramones T shirts when the children have never even heard of them. That is the parents trying to be 'cool' imo. A child in a Spongebob or Dora t shirt is, imo, expressing their own taste, and there's nothing wrong with that. My ds loves his George Pig jumper and Macca Pacca t shirt and I really don't think that's tacky. I think it's adorable. So there

cracklingfire · 05/04/2010 18:32

my nephew wears black band tshirts all the time. It really doesn't suit him

How ever you dress it up character stuff is tacky and that's why it's soooooo cheap, never found on decent makes of clothes either.

kitkatsforbreakfast · 05/04/2010 18:42

I let my dc choose character clothing, for their pants! Then I don't have to see it, nor does anyone else, but they are being given some chance to buy into Ben 10 or whatever.

Afraid I really really couldn't have a Peppa Pig t shirt in the house. And, on the subject, how on earth does my dd (just 3) know what Peppa Pig is - she's never seen it on television, and I don't think she goes in for meaningful conversations at pre-school, more the 'give me the raisins' type.

blueshoes · 05/04/2010 18:43

Another one with slim children who wear skinny jeans like they were normal trousers. Not restrictive at all. But gorgeous, really cute to see, esp on ds.

mummee09v · 05/04/2010 18:43

Justallovertheplace:

My DS does like the music of the bands who's t-shirts I put him in - actually. He has his own playlist on spotify of songs he has chosen himself. And his favourite bands are Kiss and Iron Maiden.

So there.

And I still think character stuff is horribly tacky and cheap-looking. Why is that snobby?

kitkatsforbreakfast · 05/04/2010 18:44

Actually, I must eat my words - ds1 has a Tintin top that I really like. I probably like it because it's well made, high quality fabric, nice colour (sludgy brown and indigo-y), and... I approve of Tintin! (my era)

mummee09v · 05/04/2010 18:45

oh DS has character pants and socks too!! Lol. and I am fine with that as no one sees them! his favourites at the moments are Lazy town ones

ShadeofViolet · 05/04/2010 18:46

I hate jogging bottoms on my children - I dont know why, but I really do. However if other people want to dress thier children in them I wouldnt give it a second thought. Its each to thier own isnt it.

My DD wears leggings and jeggins, mainly because she is such a chunky monkey that she doesnt fit it other trousers without having a muffin top, she needs the stretch!

My DS1 lives in character tops - he has about 15 Mario ones and he never looks tacky (and they are not cheap either!). He choses them so its up to him.

livviloo · 05/04/2010 18:55

My daughter is very slim and skinny jeans are not tight at all but my nephew is far from it.(hence the mermaid tail)

OP posts:
livviloo · 05/04/2010 18:56

oh and she is 8(out of nappies) and he is 2(in nappies). So I doubt he could chose a playlist on spotify or anywhere else.

OP posts:
mummee09v · 05/04/2010 18:57

oh yeah i agree that, erm, chunkier, children should steer clear! in the same way as bigger than a size 8 adults should not wear them!

my friend puts her DD in skinnies but she is fat not very slim.

ShadeofViolet · 05/04/2010 18:58

Bigger than a size 8 shouldnt wear skinnies I love mine and I am a 10.

eandh · 05/04/2010 18:59

Riven - my 5 year old (but very tall so in age 6-7 bottoms) has got joggers fromNext and Primark. Primark ones are velour but quite thin but Next ones are thicker and warmer (she wore them with thermal leggingsand snow suits when we were in Finland and it was -21 and never complained she was cold once)

livviloo · 05/04/2010 19:01

Boden do trackie bots but at a cost! I got them in tescos.

SpawnChorus · 05/04/2010 19:01

DD had to wear skinny jeans as she was such a beanpole that normal jeans didn't stay up (even adjustable elasticated ones). She had absolutely NO trouble with agility while wearing them!
