??? What is this all about? Especially as it means that they cannot climb and play unless they want to look like mermaids!

My niece wears them and looks adorable....coupled with a dash of Oilily and Catimini though!!

Pikelit · 05/04/2010 15:42

There's a huge difference between "fashion" and fashionable clothes for children. I didn't buy much stuff from chain stores for my lads when they were little. Instead they had some fab shirts and long shorts from Nipper in Brighton. But all their clothes were practical - they allowed movement, washed easily but weren't boring! They were still clothes for children though. Not some strange version of crap adult fashion!

BuzzingNoise · 05/04/2010 15:42

YANBU. I saw a little girl in a play place the other week wearing skinny jeans over a nappy and it looked ridiculous.

Wanderingsheep · 05/04/2010 15:43

meant to add, don't get me wrong, the little girl that I'm thinking of always looks beautiful and the dresses that she wears are gorgeous for going to visit Grandparents/out to lunch/shopping etc. But I just think that it's impractical when she's trying to play!

DinahRod · 05/04/2010 15:50

Am always a bit taken aback to seethis sort of clothing on a 3-4yr old.

mrsboogie · 05/04/2010 15:51

I bought my DS some skinny jeans from Next - they aren't restrictive at all and they didn't look chavvy but they did make him look as if his legs were too skinny to hold him up!

hmmm, in my mind Skinny jeans in my mind are sexy and curve-hugging so therefore surely inappropriate for a baby or a toddler.....

Just my opinion though, which doesn't normally mean much

i dress my 3 YO DS in skinny jeans!!! (although he is well out of nappies) i think they look so much better than those baggy monstrosities. i actually put him in girls ones from H & M as he is very slim so the cut is fab for him.

i won't put him in "character" clothes, ie Ben 10, thomas, etc, either. i find all that horribly TACKY. all his clothes are trendy in a kind of mini rock star style (think kingston rossdale) he wears band t-shirts or retro style t-shirts and he wears either Uggs or converse trainers. i keep his hair long too.

he is truly gorge.

see pics on my profile. shamelessly proud of gorgeous child

I get a lot of my dc's clothes from rachel riley. Luckily for me, my sil passes them down to me because I certainly couldn't afford to buy them new. But they are lovely. Classic, but on the whole practical, beautiful fabric and stylish without being fashionable. My elder ds won't wear them any more!

PrammyMammy · 05/04/2010 17:09

i love rachel riley.

SalFresco · 05/04/2010 17:09

mummee your DS is indeed gorgeous!!

DS1 had skinny jeans from H&M...he often used to wear them with a white shirt and a black tie and waistcoat, with Converse and he looked lovely! Nappies are so slim fitting, it wasn't even noticeable he was wearing them. I'm not keen on character clothes either, but he does wear those that have been bought for him...he has about 4 Toy Story t-shirts, but has never seen the film!! If it were up to him, he would wear a 3 piece suit at all times, a la David Tennant / Dr Who.

I don't agree that choosing trendy clothes means you are using your child as an accesory - surely traditional clothes are also an expression of your personal taste?! Although I might feel differently if I had DD's - the whole issue of age appropriate seems more relevent to girls clothes.

sweetkitty · 05/04/2010 17:10

All my 3 DDs wear skinny jeans (they are 5, 4 and 20 months), I actively hunt them out.

They are all very skinny especially DD1 and it is a nightmare to find her jeans that are the correct length but not really baggy, skinny jeans look like normal jeans on my lot.

I love DD3 in leggings with long tunic tops as well and dresses with leggings underneath.

I agree with little girls wearing long flowing, frilly dressed to soft play areas and toddler groups.

damnedchilblains · 05/04/2010 17:16

"This child is unable to part his legs from the knees up!"

Thats nuts ok sorry yanbu from your post that's a little extreme.

tethersend · 05/04/2010 17:17

Are the objections being raised to clothes that children cannot play in or from a fashion point of view?

Skinny jeans are fine as long as they are stretchy (girls like to climb and play too BTW OP).

We all actively dress our children in a certain way to give off a certain message- those sneering at Burberry, would you also sneer at Boden? Because it's the same, only with different colours and patterns. And connotations, of course

If we were to dress our kids purely practically, they'd live in binbags.

mummee09v · 05/04/2010 17:17

awww thanks salfresco

awww your ds1's outfits sound lovely i love H n M kids, i spend a fortune in there!

"i won't put him in "character" clothes, ie Ben 10, thomas, etc, either. i find all that horribly TACKY."

Wow how incredibly snobby .

I would understand if a child was wearing a pair of low-rise super tight jeans (skinny jeans are just a phrase and very rarely hardly that) teamed with a tight cropped top, then you might "draw unwanted attention" as it probably is a little provocative but seriously, what business is it of anyone's what another child wears.

I also wonder how many "I would never put my child in skinny jeans" mners would stick their child in a bikini??

kitkatsforbreakfast · 05/04/2010 17:35

damned chilblains - much as it would make me boak, I would definitely rather put my dd in skinny jeans than a bikini. I have extremely judgy views about bikinis on small girls. More specifically, I have strong views on bikini TOPS on small girls. My dd looks rather lovely in bikini bottoms, but at 3, no way is she wearing the tops.

livviloo · 05/04/2010 17:46

To clarify my gripe is not with how they look at all but with the fact that they restrict movement and ability to climb/play etc. IMO people can dress their kids in what they like aesthetically and they will inevitable reflect the style of their parents. My kids certainly do.
Sure they are fine for times when adventurous play is not happening (dinner with grandparents etc) but this weekend he was sent to stay with 3 pairs of ultra tight jeans and is unable to run/jump in puddles/climb old tractor tyres and tree stumps. Hence he has spent the weekend in his PJs!
Is it unreasonable to keep spare clothes at our house for him to wear when he is with us and grubbing around in the mud(he is town mouse coming to stay with counrty mouse essentially- we did have to buy him wellies too!)

sweetkitty · 05/04/2010 17:58

As for character tops I have found that once my DDs could express a wish that's the ones they wanted.

I take them shopping with me for clothes and they definitely know what they like to wear and unless it is too grown up or tarty for them I will buy them what they want as clothes are an expression of their tastes as well as mine.

PfftTheMagicDragon · 05/04/2010 18:11

mummmmmeeee, I'm no fan of character clothing myself, however, there is no difference between a Thomas the Tank Engine shirt, or a RHCP t shirt. Its all branding, just one that you find more palatable.
