I clean the fridge and freezers out every week, rotate the stock etc. Dishwash the fridge shelves and racks. My mum and DH think this is ridiculous and that I am obsessed with it.

I should say that I used to be a pastry chef in a 5* hotel and we stripped and cleaned our service fridge and rotated the stock daily so my clean-fridge obsession is probably a hangover from that. I am rather Monica about the house which again stems from 10 years in luxury hotels.

AIBU clean freaky ?

never occurred to me to put the shelves in the dishwasher - thats a labour saver.

bargainhuntingbetty · 31/03/2010 12:31

Love the idea of moving house rather than cleaning the oven. fantastic idea. With regards to the fridge No comment about mine and

LittleMrsHappy · 31/03/2010 12:33

I do mine every 2 weeks, due to being obsessed with kitchen cleanliness, I keep and food bugs spreading on surfaces, but I do think weekly is a bit obsessive lol x

GoldenSnitch · 31/03/2010 12:34

Big clean once a week does seem a little excessive. How dirty can it get in 7 days!!

I do the quick wipe with anti-bac spray every time I do a shop and shelves and drawers out for a dip in the sink once a month.

We only have a slimline dishwasher and I can't get the shelves in

Our fridge never stinks unless I've made kegeree and it's has smoked haddock in it.

Oven is a pyro clean one but the racks go in the dishwasher once a week. Microwave is wiped down once a week and steam cleaned by microwaving a bowl full of bicarb and lemon once a month. Toaster is given a good shake and has it's crumb tray emptied weekly too.

Could do with some tips on keeping the washing machine clean though...

I have heard that you can dishwash the powder drawer but have always wondered if it makes your dishes taste soapy?

LifeOfKate · 31/03/2010 12:34

Wishing chair - there are people who clean behind the kickboards?!

I have never cleaned the oven, DH and I solve the problem by both leaving it up to the other one

GoldenSnitch · 31/03/2010 12:41

Can't clean behind my kickboards - I have kickboard drawers

I think the chance of getting food poisoning from a freezer that is cleaned less than once a week is infintessimally small. Bacteria grow very, very slowly at -18C, and particularly if it's food that is likely to be cooked food past it's sell-by date should be fine. There's a thread on here somewhere about some double cream I used at Christmas which had been in the freezer since the previous Christmas and we all ate with no ill-effects. The best chilli con carne I have ever tasted was made with roast beef that had been frozen for at least 2 1/2 years and last week we had roast pork that had been in the freezer since 2008. All fine.

I clean my fridge and freezer if they look obviously grubby, but otherwise, nah, life's too short.

MaMight · 31/03/2010 12:56

I think my cleaner does the fridge every couple of weeks. It always seems clean anyway.

gizmo · 31/03/2010 13:08

Hmm. Fibilou, I tend to clean fridge every 2 weeks, generally 15 minutes before food delivery arrives because it will be nearly empty then. Takes 15-20 minutes.

But then I was only a kitchen assistant in a 3 star hotel - looks like yer gets what you pays for in hotel hygeine .

oldraver · 31/03/2010 13:10

I only clean/clear out the fridge at Christmas... so I can get more in

TheChewyToffeeMum · 31/03/2010 13:10

Right you lot. If my fridge shelves come out of the dishwasher all wonky you are getting the blame!
I am feeling quite guilty at the minging state of the back of my fridge.

Pikelit · 31/03/2010 13:17

I've got a cleaner but actually, I'd rather do the simple maintenance of the fridge myself. Because simple is what I do. Food does get rotated (if rotation means using the milk in the order it was bought) and shelves are given a quick wipe down before being filled again. Beyond that I'm not going. I live in a house, not an operating theatre.

Paste is on 'the stain'.

What on earth are you lot doing in your fridges that they are getting dirty?

If you take a little care not to spill stuff all over the place every time you put something in there, there will be no need to clean it for months weeks.

Acid test is - are you getting food poisoning, does it smell, does it look dirty? Answer to these questions is no, then it's good enough for me

Longtalljosie · 31/03/2010 13:29

Fibilou - can we really put the shelves in the dishwasher? Even the glass bits?

ImSoNotTelling · 31/03/2010 13:33

All this cleaning of fridges and freezers every 5 mins is not v environmentally friendly.

drloves8 · 31/03/2010 13:38

once a week is not "every 5 mins" . whats unenviromentally about bicarb and lemon juice? ... or perhaps you ment having a fridge at all , being that it uses electricity.

ImSoNotTelling · 31/03/2010 13:43

The longer you have the door open /spend time switching it on and off, the more cold air is escaping that will need to be replaced.

If you are going to try and convince me that you can clean a fridge in the time it takes to open and close the door and take some milk out then I don't believe you.

Every time you remove a shelf and wash it, it will rise in temperature and the fridge will have to work to cool it back down when you put it back in.

Obviously.

ImSoNotTelling · 31/03/2010 13:44

It's the fridge equivalent of using a washing machine on a high temperature setting.

drloves8 · 31/03/2010 13:51

im so told off !

Charlieknows · 31/03/2010 13:52

God, everyone's making me feel very manky! I only clean my fridge every few months...

ImSoNotTelling · 31/03/2010 13:54

You give me an eyebrow I give you a decisive answer

My DH drives me mad, he is one of those who wanders up and opens it and then peers in blankly for ages. I am forever saying "shut the fridge" as if he is a small child
