to think my friend was rude for smoking drugs next to me

Brief context...

I met up with some old friends I've known since school (we left school about 15 years ago).

As teenagers I suppose we used to smoke dope a bit, me less than others, was never that keen on it but didn't have a problem if other people chose to do it.

We all met up in a pub, we've stayed in touch but are scattered around the country so I don't see them often.

We were sitting in the (heated)garden of the pub and one of them decided to roll and smoke a big fat spliff. The garden was full of people, bar staff in and out collecting glasses.

I asked my friend not to smoke it nex tto me, it made me really comfortable him doing it in public, plus he knows I work for the police now and I didn't exactly want to be involved if someone called the police (I'm not a police officer, by the way).

Anyway, he refused and sat there blatantly smoking it so I ended up moving inside to another part of the pub. One friend came in to keep me company and the rest just sat with him and acted as though I was over-reacting.

As I say, I don't much care if people smoke dope, but I just think he could have been more considerate.

AIBU?

(disclaimer - I had no idea he was likely to do that, having not seen him for years)

Sounds like an idiot.

bunnylicious · 22/03/2010 17:39

He can be lovely though, which is what surprised me about him point blank refusing to accept my point of view.

I would have been really embarrassed and gone inside too. It smells so everybody knows. Don't care what people do but there is a time and a place.

Slartybartfast · 22/03/2010 17:43

does your job mean you have to report him?
and not associate with spliff takers?

birdworthington · 22/03/2010 17:45

Why didn't you just move to the other side of the table, I can understand that you don't like it (I don't) but you were over-reacting by going inside.

posieparker · 22/03/2010 17:47

I love weed, can't ever do it now I have dcs or I would need SS intervention, and I would be mortified if anyone in my circle was smoking it in public. I think you were fair you asked him not to, he refused you moved away. Can't really see an issue here.

RubyBuckleberry · 22/03/2010 17:48

YABU - sounds like you need to chill out

bunnylicious · 22/03/2010 17:48

Because I'd still be sitting with him if I was on the other side of the table. What would moving there achieve?

As far as I'm aware, no, I don't have to report him - certainly it's not something I've ever been directed to do in the course of my training or contact with management.

I've never been told not to associate with spliff takers either, although it's something I generally choose not to do.

would you have reacted to a normal roll up?

bunnylicious · 22/03/2010 17:51

Slarty, I'm not going to answer that because it's probably the daftest response I've ever seen to AIBU.

OP posts:
Slartybartfast · 22/03/2010 17:52

yabu
on 2 counts in that case.

groundhogs · 22/03/2010 17:52

Your friend was RUDE, and to smoke that stuff in the open, is just beyond LOW CLASS.

Ditch em.

Confused
bunnylicious · 22/03/2010 18:33

Actually, come to think of it, I already was on the other side of the table.

OP posts:
junglist1 · 22/03/2010 18:42

Why was he rude? He could say you're rude for choosing to work for the police

SouthMum · 22/03/2010 18:47

YABU

You asked him to move, he didn't, so you moved. End of.

nighbynight · 22/03/2010 18:48

Do you remember, at one time this situation was posed to people who were interested in joining the metropolitan police, ie what would you do if a friend started smoking dope in front of you?

always a tricky one. He sounds fairly undesirable as a friend, I must say, as he obviously didnt care that he was putting you in an awkward situation.

nighbynight · 22/03/2010 18:49

the YABUs seem to be forgetting that smoking dope is illegal....

SouthMum · 22/03/2010 18:50

No, just not too arsed if someone else wants to do it and take the risk

nighbynight · 22/03/2010 18:55

Southmum, the OP works for the police...

junglist1 · 22/03/2010 18:57

You can't expect other people to not do what they like because she chose to work for the police. I know people who are PC's who actually smoke weed themselves

EmmaBemma · 22/03/2010 18:58

It wouldn't bother me much in that situation, and I do partake occasionally myself (even post-children) but obviously it is illegal. And it's got an unmistakeable pong, I don't blame you for going inside if you didn't want to be associated with it.

bunnylicious · 22/03/2010 18:59

No, you're right.

I guess if you're the kind of person who can't last two hours in the pub without smoking a joint in a public place then your needs must come before anyone elses.

OP posts:
SouthMum · 22/03/2010 19:00

So its up to the OP if she reports him.

Or make a citizens arrest
