When i found out i was pregnant i was sure i knew when i concieved.

When i had an early dating scan it showed i was 8 weeks when i thought i was just over 11 making me just a little over 3 weeks wrong.

My dating scan showed i was even less far on in my pregnancy showing i was four weeks wrong.

My first scan tied in almost eactly to the day with my 20 week scan but i still wasnt convinced.

All scan dates showed i got pregnant around the end of july could all this be wrong and i was possibly right on thinking i got pregnant a month earlier?

I did have a period between the two months but its not impossible to bleed when youre pregnant is it.

Any chance the 8 week dating scan could have been over 3 weeks out?

My daughter was born 2 weeks late of the date the hospital gave me which means she would have been over 5 weeks late at birth if im right. Could this be possible?

She weighed 8lb 3oz at birth and has always been about average on her height and weight charts.

You can bleed when you are pregnant, especially at first.

Why does it matter so much about a couple of weeks?

skinsl · 22/03/2010 09:21

I think they know what they are doing. never heard of baby being born 5 weeks late, but then i guess they would induce before that. why are you so sure you are right?

ladylikelilly · 22/03/2010 09:24

just more curious than bothered.

I supose it doesnt matter i just felt pregnant before where there saying i wasnt.

The difference between an 8week scan and 11week scan is immense. At 8wk I wouldnt expect to see much more than a heartbeat. At 11 weeks you can see a 'baby' so for them to be 3 weeks out they would have had to be a terrible sonographer imho which is unlikely really given they'll be doing loads of these scans all the time.

Also I dont know if the placenta would last 5 weeks 'extra' and she wasnt a huge baby or anything.

I would assume the docs were right. Anyways your daughter is here now so why does it matter unless its a case of paternity.

belgo · 22/03/2010 09:28

I agree with waiting for bedtime. All the evidence seems to point to you dd being conceived a few weeks after the date you initially suspected.

ladylikelilly · 22/03/2010 09:33

Yeah i just always thought i was so sure that i was quite shocked when i was wrong.

No question of paternity just wondered wether maybe my body carried for 5 weeks longer was just interested if it could have been possible.

My sonographer told me the early scan was accurate to within 2-3 days and the NHS dating scan accurate to within 5 days. still not convinced tjo im a stubborn thing

MmeLindt · 22/03/2010 09:35

I would say it is highly unlikely for both scans to be wrong and you to have been overdue by 5 weeks.

I was 2 weeks overdue and the amniotic fluid was already green, a sign that it was definitely time for DD to come out.

JustMyTwoPenceWorth · 22/03/2010 09:40

My date was 2 weeks before theirs. They insisted that their scans showed I conceived a fortnight after I thought I did.

Except that me and my husband rarely had sex and I knew exactly when I conceived -because unless the good lord had a hand and ds1 is destined for Great Things, there's no way the scan was right.

But they also said he was about 8lb, and he was 10lb 4oz.

And they said I could not feel him 'stuck' in me and he got stuck and ended up with erbs palsy (shoulder dystocia)

And he was born with wrinkly dry skin (which they can do if they're over)

So imo, they can be wrong.

ladylikelilly · 22/03/2010 09:43

justmytwopenceworth when did you have youre scan did you have an early scan orthe nhs 12 week scan?

OP posts:
ladylikelilly · 22/03/2010 09:44

Sounds like you were right twopenceworth My DD looked fairly normal not dry and an average size at birth which i supose differs but i still definately felt pregnant beforehand.

ObsidianBlackbirdMcNight · 22/03/2010 09:46

Both scans said the same date
you had a period after the time you thought you conceived
you went 2 weeks overdue

Nah - you were not pregnant for 45 weeks. What possible reason could you have for thinking you were?

ObsidianBlackbirdMcNight · 22/03/2010 09:48

sore breasts, irritability, tiredness and nausea can be menstrual symptoms as well as pregnancy.

ladylikelilly · 22/03/2010 09:48

Well i feel abit stupid now i supose none really other than i felt pregnant before.

anastaisia · 22/03/2010 09:51

When you have sex isn't necessarily the time you conceive though.

Sperm can live for up to 7(ish) days in the right conditions and as you approach ovulation the conditions inside you get better (lower Ph, fertile mucus etc). So you could have actually conceived about a week after you had sex.

And they don't date a pregnancy from when you conceive because not everyone knows when they ovulate so they go from last menstrual period. When you say the first scan was 3 weeks out - do you mean from your last period or from the time you had sex?

JaneS · 22/03/2010 09:56

It's possible you were pregnant and miscarried without even realizing the first month?

Btw, I read an article a while back about a lady who consistently went to the end of the tenth month with her babies.

nickschick · 22/03/2010 09:59

I was 43 ++++ with my first ds its on my notes.

Its not good and certainly best avoided.

We had a letter of apology over the 'error'.

ladylikelilly · 22/03/2010 10:01

when i was told i was 8 weeks pregnant (6 weeks from conception) i thought i was about 9 weeks from conception 11 weeks from lmp. the sonographer told me this wasnt possible but i just wasnt too sure.

All my scans were the same plus or minus a few days but maybe i just had a small baby?

could an 8 week fetus be mistaken for an 11 week fetus?

or maybe she was just small?

OP posts:
ladylikelilly · 22/03/2010 10:03

what happened when you went that far over.

I heard it was dangerous to go over by more than 2 weeks because the placenta fails.

How did u go that far over without being induced?

OP posts:
Horton · 22/03/2010 10:05

could an 8 week fetus be mistaken for an 11 week fetus?

Absolutely not. The two would look completely different!

ladylikelilly · 22/03/2010 10:08

Yeah i mean the difference betweenmy 8 an 12 week scan was immense.

Mabe i did misscarry

Could i have gotton pregnant so soon after a mc though?

OP posts:
JaneS · 22/03/2010 10:12

Didn't mean to upset you, ladylikelilly. It just sound like it's a possibility if you are so sure you were pregnant earlier. But as someone else said, you can bleed while pregnant too.

ObsidianBlackbirdMcNight · 22/03/2010 10:12

Why do you think you were pregnant? You say you felt pregnant but how? I feel pregnant sometimes when my period is due, this month I thought I was pregnant seriously, doesn't mean I was though. Remember at 2-3 weeks after conception symptoms are very indistinct anyway!
I think you're being a wee bit daft thinking you might have miscarried. Honestly (I've had one) a failed implantation is hardly a miscarriage, especially if you don't know about it til afterwards. Nobody knows how many 'periods' are actually failed implantations because we can't usually test before period is due. What is far more likely is that if you were trying you were hyper aware of any pg symptom, and convinced yourself you were pg when you weren't.

ladylikelilly · 22/03/2010 10:17

Yeah i supose. Maybe i was just displaying signs of menstruation rather than pregnancy.

Maybe the docs were right.

I supose the odds that 3 scans including one so early were wrong and that i went over by 5 weeks and beeing pregnant through a bleed do sound abit daft when i think about it lol .

Maybe it was my bodys way of telling me to prepare haha :D

OP posts:
zazen · 22/03/2010 10:23

I was given the wrong dates by the scans - 2 weeks after her due date according to me.
I had had fertility treatment - a scan which showed exactly when I ovulated and then we knew (obv) when we did the deed - we were booked into do IUI that day, but thought we'd have one last 'go' ouselves

I was a little PO'd with the obs as I kept saying one date and they kept saying another - when my DD was born (over by three days according to them) the paediatrician said she must be 10 days over as her skin is so dry.

I was delighted that the proof of the pudding was in the eating - IYKWIM! I had told them about the fertility scan etc.....

they can be wrong..
