To think hosting a sleepover for four 9yo girls can't be that bad?

I've never done the sleepover thing before.

Everyone I mention it to raises their eyes to heaven and says nothing and just sort of looks at me.

It can't be that awful.

Can it?

DD (birthday girl) is playing schools and is being very bossy.

i give you every sympathy, i did it only once. i couldn't hack it again - eventually i came down at gone midnight ( they were all camping in the living room) and told them to "SHUT UP AND GO TO SLEEP"

TOTALLY LOST THE PLOT

Shodan · 19/03/2010 21:09

You have checked for illicit midnight snack items, haven't you? You know, the stuff packed full of e numbers designed to ensure that at least one will have nightmares (IF they sleep), one will throw up/threaten to throw up and another one will take you to one side and quietly inform you that their mum doesn't ever let them have that stuff for ethical reasons.

Not that most of it will get eaten. Some of it will be found six months later mouldering away in a corner.

(My lot were 10, btw.)

snigger · 19/03/2010 21:11

I'm going to save myself some time, and say : bumpybecky - ditto.

Someone's going to fall out with someone and text their Mum, really soon.

snigger · 19/03/2010 21:12

If they're still speaking when it gets to cornflakes time I'll send you a doughnut.

Cadelaide · 19/03/2010 22:28

Okaaaaay.

I've just been up. There is a thick layer of broken crisps, party rings, jammy dodgers and pringles covering pretty much the entire floor.

DD is marching around in just her knickers. She is holding them open at the top, saying "I'm collecting money for charity".

Every single word anyone utters is met with gales of whinnying giggles.

They are all very red and sweaty.

They don't have mobiles.

Is that normal at 9, to have a mobile?

Are we particularly backward around here?

OP posts:
OrmRenewed · 19/03/2010 22:31

cadelaide - I assume you have the water cannons on stand-by?

TottWriter · 19/03/2010 22:32

at the knickers thing. I would have been mortified if it was one of my friends doing that at that age, let alone doing it myself.

You have a very...courageous DD. Have you said anything about the mess in DS1's room? Or will they be playing 'cleaners' tomorrow morning?

Cadelaide · 19/03/2010 22:34

Guess I'm pretty liberal then

OP posts:
Cadelaide · 19/03/2010 22:36

water cannons

spiderpig8 · 19/03/2010 22:38

Are you going to tell them when its time to go to bed or just let them go til they drop?

liahgen66 · 19/03/2010 22:39

sounds great fun I think.

My 2 eldest have always got a friend or 2 sleeping over, dd, (15) usually 3 at a time, they're very funny as they get a bit older.

OrmRenewed · 19/03/2010 22:42

"Are you going to tell them when its time to go to bed" Ha ha ha ha! Good one!

Are you having a lovely time cad? I'd offer to help but I don't know where you live......

Cadelaide · 19/03/2010 22:43

I'll see how it goes.

Seems pretty pointless telling them to go to sleep atm.

One of them looks very tired though, poor thing.

OP posts:
Cadelaide · 19/03/2010 22:44

Actually I'm quite enjoying it really.

Ask me again at 1am!

OP posts:
spiderpig8 · 19/03/2010 22:45

I turn into a wicked witch at 11 o'clock when there are sleepovers

Cadelaide · 19/03/2010 22:46

D'you think I can have a glass of wine, or will they all tell their parents I'm a hopeless drunkard?

OP posts:
SinninHinny · 19/03/2010 22:48

Hello again. You are surviving very well. I wet my pantaloons at 'collecting for charity'.

Now, I'm relaxing with a cider, idly MNing/reading/watching Kill Bill and thanking all deities that I have no sleepovers.

SinninHinny · 19/03/2010 22:50

I have a glass of wine if I'm Sleepover Mum, as do the other Mums when it's their turn....

Cadelaide · 19/03/2010 22:50

yes, I thought it was pretty funny Sinnin, but I do feel a bit bad posting it on here for all to read.

OP posts:
Cadelaide · 19/03/2010 22:50

OK, off to get one then...

OP posts:
SinninHinny · 19/03/2010 22:55

Honestly, I would have laughed. 9yr olds are still very innocent. I can't believe they don't have mobiles

Enjoy your wine. You deserve it.

cakewench · 19/03/2010 22:56

Sleepovers are incredibly popular in the US. I was always having someone over at my place, or vice versa, and most birthday parties at that age were sleepovers. This wasn't in a particularly huge American house, either- just a townhouse in Washington, DC.

No, I don't think we ever slept. We just had terrible food (pizza, crisps) and lots of horror movies to scare the daylights out of us. Then maybe we'd ring the local radio station to make requests. (pretty sure that last statement makes me old) etc.

I think it depends on the person, though, as an adult, as to whether or not you can deal with the disruption. I'm pretty sure my husband would rather move out for the night than be here for one!
