stopping my kids going to a Catholic Church

jennyslinger · 17/03/2010 22:57

I know religion is contentious so I'd like to say up front that I am a confirmed atheist and my DH is a confirmed catholic. This is not about the rights or wrongs of believing in god.

DH wants DS and DD (when she's 4yo) to go to our local Cathocis church to attend sunday school and get involved with other church activities.

I have read so much over the last few years about the child abuse cover-up in the Catholic Church. For this reason I have told DH and his family that the kids will not be going.

DH says I am fussing over nothing.

I asked DH he knew a nursery had covered up child abuse would he be happy with the kids going. He says this is not the same.

Am I being unreasonable?

No, they also don't regard registry office ceremonies as marriage. What has this got to do with the subject of the thread. If you want to have a theological debate about homosexuality you should take it elsewhere instead of using this thread to have a bash at everything and anything about the Catholic Church.

pigletmania · 18/03/2010 16:20

ERm the Catholic faith is not the only religion that does not believe in sex before marriage, and is anti homophobic, other religions are too you know, why isnt anyone questionling the Muslim or Jewish faiths or other Christian denominations, or is it Catholic bashing day today.

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 18/03/2010 16:21

pamplem0usse, can you really compare the organised cover-up of abuse with the OP lying in church? God knew she didn't mean it..

pamplem0usse · 18/03/2010 16:22

No they don't regard Civil Partnership as marriage. But I don't think the legal definition does either?
Incidentally I know of plenty of Catholic Churches where gay men make up a significant proportion of the congregation. From my experience it's less about homosexuality (in terms of impulses) being viewed as wrong, than sex outside marriage. But then, this is high Institutional doctrine. Catholicism is one of those religions where I would suggest the majority deviate from one or more of these doctrines (re: contraception, sex before marriage, etc...)

BattyKoda · 18/03/2010 16:24

I've not had a bash at everything and anything about the Catholic Church... I've asked a question. No need to be so defensive...?

But as you mention it I will . I think it's disgusting that this country allows such an organistion to exist, let alone run schools, after child abuse cover ups and teachings against homosexuality. Do they also exclude children from certain ethnic backgrounds from attending too?

pamplem0usse · 18/03/2010 16:25

OldLady they are structurally comparable, rather than practically. Even if you take God out of the equation it all comes down to systematised deception.
And don't dare suggest that I don't totally abhor many of the things that have gone on in the Catholic Church. But then, I know some truly wonderful priests who've done amazing things and they're not getting a word in here, are they!

glastocat · 18/03/2010 16:25

BattyKoda, no, they don't.

My husband went to a catholic boarding school and was taught that homosexuality was wrong. It didn't stop at least one of the priests being quietly asked to leave for buggering schoolboys though. They were also told that masturbation was a sin, contraception is evil etc etc.

As for Catholic bashing, I'm an equal opprtunity basher. I think all religions are nonsense, but ones that won't allow half the population to have any part of the heirarchy particulaly boil my piss.

BattyKoda · 18/03/2010 16:25

piglet - perhaps becuase the thread is about catholic schools

RockbirdisdrinkingGuinness · 18/03/2010 16:26

Still going then. Hey ho at least the op has confirmed how stupid she actually is. That settles that debate nicely.

BattyKoda · 18/03/2010 16:26

I wonder why they teach that contraception is wrong....

TheHeathenOfSuburbia · 18/03/2010 16:28

Tch, Battykoda - if God says so (via His representative on Earth, the Pope), then it is wrong! You don't go asking why - that way hellfire lies!

swanandduck · 18/03/2010 16:29

BettyKoda

You are bringing up all kinds of questions about the Catholic faith that have nothing to do with the OP. No one is being defensive. You jumped into the middle of this thread, said you hadn't read it and then immediately asked if the Catholic Church taught that homosexuality was wrong, even though that was not related to the discussion on hand. You have now made an absolutely ridiculous accusation against the Church. I don't know what your agenda is, but it sounds nasty.

pamplem0usse · 18/03/2010 16:30

Batty no they don't exclude people on the basis of ethnic background.

You can actually use the rhythm method of contraception.....

I'm finding it quite interesting how I as a thoroughly lapsed Catholic end up defending my old Church!

RockbirdisdrinkingGuinness · 18/03/2010 16:30

Oh yes and pmsl at the op being the font of all knowledge regarding Irish Catholic families. Definitely a troll, far too stupid to be real.

GenevieveHawkings · 18/03/2010 16:33

I wouldn't call anyone who wanted to keep children away from any form of organised religion unreasonable!

And quite frankly the whole "they're his children too" argument stinks.

They are their own people and should be left to make their own decisions about what they belive.

I'd advise you to leave your DH alone to believe in whatever sky pixie he choses to belive in but tell him to leave the kids out of it.

Hopefully that way they'll go through life realitively unscathed by relgious indoctrination.

glastocat · 18/03/2010 16:33

BattyKoda, contraception is wrong because you are meant to go and breed lots of little catholics, every sperm is sacred apparently.. By planning your family you are setting your own wishes above god's.

swanandduck · 18/03/2010 16:33

But Rockbird, did you not know that all Irish people just want craic and parties and loads of drink and everything is all bound up in this. We also spend our free time wearing tartan dresses and dancing jigs. That's when we're not listening to priests threatening fire and brimstone from the pulpit if we let a African or Indian child into our schools.

BattyKoda · 18/03/2010 16:34

swanandduck - I said I was having a conversation earlier about this, someone mentioned the homosexuality thing, so I thought I'd ask here. Can you point me to the section in the rule book that says that asks questions slightly off subject is not allowed on a thread?
Where's my ridculous accusation? Is it the accusation that the Catholic church excludes whole groups of society becuase of sexual preference? Something that can't be chosen, a bit like race, or disability? That is ridiculous, your right.

glastocat · 18/03/2010 16:34

Although the rhythm method is ok. Which makes no sense to me, but hey, none of it does TBF.

BattyKoda · 18/03/2010 16:35

glastocat - I see, thank you

swanandduck · 18/03/2010 16:36

Your ridiculous accusation is that Catholic schools exclude children from different ethnical backgrounds.
What has the Catholic Church's views on homosexuality got to do with this thread. You are expected to stay broadly on topic, you know.

pigletmania · 18/03/2010 16:36

No the thread is not about Catholic schools its about the op not wanting her kids going to Catholic church! If the Op felt so strongly about the Catholic faith why did she ask for our opinions when she already knew what she wanted to do Seems like a bit of sh£$%t stirring if you ask me.

swanandduck · 18/03/2010 16:37

Anyway, this thread has descended into undignified and nasty Catholic bashing. Now hiding it.

pigletmania · 18/03/2010 16:37

No the Catholic chruch is not the only religion that excludes half the population

BattyKoda · 18/03/2010 16:38

Would you like me to start a thread about it swanandduck? Will that not be frowned upon though?

Sorry piglet, I missed the sunday out of school when I read the OP.
