About 2 years ago my mums car set on fire in a petrol station.

She had it repaired and they bought a larger 7 seater as the had grandkids.

The car sat at theirs for a few months then they gave it to us. Really nice of them but we were wary about the faults but it had been fixed,

We paid around £200 to sort sveral little things out and DH started his lessons.

Since then DH lost his job and the car has just sat on the drive rotting,

we have 3 children and its now too small for us.

Its an old car.

We have told my mum that we are saving up to bu a 7 seater and will get it in about october and asked if she wants the car back.

She says no.

She said sell it.

Thing is, its old, we on't he e mon get it sted up, ithas no tax, no m its fily and it stinks inside.

I don'tthink its worth anyhing.

The scrap yard will give us £100.

She said my dad said we are to clean it up and sell it.

AIBU to say that I'd rather retuun it to them or scrap it as i really dont want to spnd ££ doing it up ontop of the £200 we spent last tme for it to not work or not be sellable?

I was really grateful for it but things just didn't workout and now I feel a bit awkward because its sat there, they don't want it back, we don't want it, but Ireally don't thin it will start up again to sell

How old is it? and what sort of car?

ABetaDad · 12/03/2010 21:26

Could it not be traded in under the Car Scrappage scheme for £2000. You have just 2 weeks to get it in under the scheme before it ends.

LeSangeEstSurLaBranche · 12/03/2010 21:27

We will have to sell it as broken though as it wont tart and we cant get it taxed or have it MOT'd and repaired.

it needs a new battery and tyres too.

the seats are moudly.

in the state its in we might get a tenner, lol.

we have no money yet to buy a car, when we do we will only have about 2 or 3000 for a run around.

EBay it. Tidy it up, polish it etc etc and then eBay it. We've sold many cars on ebay. YABU to not even try.

BranflakeGirl · 12/03/2010 21:32

UANBU at all! To be honest, they gave the car over to you so it's now yours and you are entitled to do as you wish. If you spend ££ doing it up there is no guarentee you'll get even what you spent back selling it...no profit.

You could, if you can be arsed, try to start it. If it does start give it a wash and a turtle wax (no maintainace, no spending) and sell it for £200 (twice the scrap dealers price) as a "fixer-upper"...make sure you specify it's condition.

Or just scrap it, take the £100 and deal with any consequences.

Either way, it's yours to do as you please.

PandaEis · 12/03/2010 21:32

i know it may be a long shot but have you tried webuyanycar.com?? we sold our old corsa there and it was in a terrible state and they gave us £1000 for it and took it without tax (gave us the disc back and told us to cash it in) it had no MOT and a flat spare too i would seriously try them if there is one near you
a quick spruce up is prob all u need to do- as in wash it and hoover it, bit of furniture polish and it will smell nice again too

Silver1 · 13/03/2010 15:00

Maybe clean it and sell it to the scrapyard for £100

BrahmsThirdRacket · 13/03/2010 15:02

YANBU. Do you think you can get it scrapped under the scheme? It's a pretty good deal.

borderslass · 13/03/2010 15:04

BrahmsThirdRacket to qualify under the scheme it has to run have an mot and tax.

RustyBear · 13/03/2010 15:08

Also the scrappage scheme only applies if you are buying a new car, so OP would have to find several thousand pounds.

paisleyleaf · 13/03/2010 21:46

I think it makes a difference what sort of car it is as to whether it's worth trying to sell it or not.
Are we talking about a metro or a karmann ghia ?

mabble · 13/03/2010 23:43

You could still try and part ex it, even if they only give you scrap value it will save you having to arange to get it to the scrap yard!

stripeyknickersspottysocks · 13/03/2010 23:49

When we bought a 2nd hand Ford the Ford dealer paid us £100 to not give them DH's old banger. They said it would cost them more than £100 to get rid of it.

So we got £100 from them and £120 from the scrapyard.

mabble · 13/03/2010 23:51

Result or what stripeyknichers?!?

ThatVikRinA22 · 13/03/2010 23:52

how did it "set on fire"??

is it safe to try and sell on?

What is it? Sure it'll sell for more than £100 on ebay or something.

nightcat · 15/03/2010 21:30

pity you can't afford new one at the moment, Vauxhall are still doing scrappage/swappage scheme, I have just got a brill new deal on my 10 year old car (scrappage PLUS p/x). But maybe they will improve on it in a few months time, so keep your eye out.
Otherwise try scrapping/selling it through a local newspaper, where there are some adverts for anything considered with/without MOT.

I doubt it's running if it's been sat on a drive for 8 years.

Motoko · 20/04/2018 00:46

You said you could get £100 to scrap it, so do that. It's not worth spending more money on it.

Tell your parents you sold it, which technically would be true, you just don't tell them you sold it to the scrap dealer.

Aquamarine1029 · 20/04/2018 01:08

Lie. Lie your arse off. Say you cleaned it up and sold it. Honestly, it's not worth the headache. Normally, I would never condone lying, but in this case no one is getting hurt. It's just an anchor around your neck.

Sixaxion · 20/04/2018 04:50

It's an old pile of shit; just weigh the damn thing in lol
