in being cross at the girl on the very crowded commuter-stuffed bus who decided to peel and eat a satsuma?

Two reasons I am pissed off at this. One is, I do think that eating something very odiferous in a confined public space is anti-social....there is no escape from it...(even healthy foods)

second, and I do know this shouldn't really come into it, but its an hour long bus journey for ds who has dyspraxia, and he has trouble with travel sickness AND is a supertaster....literally throws up in the presence of oranges being peeled and eaten. She was sitting right opposite him.

I saw how he was trying to control himself, but it was clear he wasn't going to make it. So I manage to get him off the bus, for him to throw up all overhimself, and poor wee lad has to walk 25 mins in the freezing cold without his top layer....

Possibly IABU.

cant ban every activity on off chance it may affect someone.

MadameDefarge · 08/03/2010 14:24

amber, again for the umpteenth time, there was NO WAY I could have got past the ten or so sardine packed people in the aisle to tap her on the shoulder...

I know someone who has a buttonphobia. Shall we ban all buttons?

nappyaddict · 08/03/2010 14:25

YANBU - I thought you weren't supposed to eat on buses? Would he also have thrown up at the smell of a carton of orange juice?

SoupDragon · 08/03/2010 14:26

"Good manners would say that any strong smelling thing is likely to provoke a negative reaction in a least a few people, so the polite thing would be not to do it."

So people should stop using all fabric softener, detergents, perfume and aftershave...?

You can't expect people to stop doing things on the off-chance that it may offend one person.

amber1979 · 08/03/2010 14:26

so how did you manage to get off the bus then, Madame? Levitation?

ifancyashandy · 08/03/2010 14:26

To be honest, I think you're more pissed off that someone (unknowingly) had the audacity to upset your Infant Prince. She didn't know it would cause him to be ill. Satsuma's are inoffensive to most. Get over it.

MadameDefarge · 08/03/2010 14:26

rockbird, I can't imagine that an acidic orange would help to quell queasyness.

And actually, there are lots of routemasters in London, and plain old doubledeckers...

The new routemasters have just replaced the bendybuses on the 38 bus route for example...

Boris, doncha know...

Could you get a slightly earlier bus on Mon AM that wouldn't be as busy. How many miles away is it? Is it too far to walk?

MadameDefarge · 08/03/2010 14:29

IfIfancy. That dig at my son is uncalled for. He has SN.

Peeled oranges are rank in enclosed spaces.

and amber, I got off by finally pushing my way through in an unbeleivably rude manner but got through by saying loudly he was going to be sick...he managed to hold on until off the bus, holding the sick in his mouth with his hands....

jumpingbeans · 08/03/2010 14:30

You should be greateful, a big rip roaring fart is far worse [imo]

MadameDefarge · 08/03/2010 14:31

nappy, the problem is that the north london line is closed where we are, and lots of people normally get that to Highbury and tranfer onto the Victoria line...for the moment they are all sardined onto the buses from about 7 onwards....

littleducks · 08/03/2010 14:32

You seem to be loosing the plot abit now Madame, the op wasnt so weird

The posters all say no smelly food there is definately not a no eating rule on tfl buses or trains

I realise you (and unfortunately your ds) see oranges as smelly but the majority of people dont. Sorry.

MadameDefarge · 08/03/2010 14:32

and actually I am pretty proud of my "Infant Prince". He had the consideration to hold it in his mouth, rather than guffing all over her...

SoupDragon · 08/03/2010 14:33

"Peeled oranges are rank in enclosed spaces."

Not according to a good number of people on this thread they aren't. Far more than those who agree with you.

ifancyashandy · 08/03/2010 14:33

The dig was not at your son - it was about your attitude that everyone else should accomodate yours and his needs before their own - even when they don't know about them.

MoreCrackThanHarlem · 08/03/2010 14:33

We all have opinions as to what is considered rank in small spaces.
It would seem your opinion is in the minority and therefore you cannot expect it to be catered for.

nappyaddict · 08/03/2010 14:34

TWM buses where I live don't allow any food or drink. I presumed that was the same everywhere, so I take my comment back.

MadameDefarge · 08/03/2010 14:34

well litteducks, I think some think I am trolling!

nope.

I get the message, IABU.

You're quite a charmer aren't you shandy

amber1979 · 08/03/2010 14:35

That's unfortunate Madame but you cannot blame the orange eating woman. Start an orangeallergy awareness group or something. Shove through rudely when she's eating it.

You cannot change the entire world to suit your son, you can only make it possible for him to cope and accept it's going to go wrong occasionally. That's life am afriad pet.

MadameDefarge · 08/03/2010 14:36

My point would be, that the rules about no eating and drinking would cover the fact that the tiny minority who dislike those smells would be treated with the same respect as the majority. Since when did being a minority mean you don't count?

Clearly most bus companies think they do, hence the rules.

OP posts:
Vivia · 08/03/2010 14:37

YABU

MadameDefarge · 08/03/2010 14:38

I don't want to change the world to suit me or my son. I want the world to abide by the established rules already in place.

And he is pretty much aware the world does not accomodate him on all sorts of levels, pet. More's the pity.

Madame, im confused now, are you allowed to eat on the bus you were on?
