to think a huge family row about farts is ott?

Went round in-laws last week. After lunch SIL turned up and had a few drinks. Our ds then farted and sil was outraged saying it was absolutely disgusting and why didn't we sort our son out! Dh said that it was only a natural bodily function and not to get so het up about it but she was having none of it. She said that it was terrible when people did this and that if her partner (who is also her boss) did it she would ditch him. I thought she must be kidding and asked her what if he let one slip by accident - she said she would still dump him! Dh said that she was being ridiculous and a huge row ensued with FIL joining in and getting almost apoplectic with rage as sil can do no wrong in his eyes. Ds was very upset so we left and have not heard from anyone since. I know ds should not have farted in the first place but can't believe all the kerfuffle about this.

How old is your ds?
Mind you in a close family this wouldnt raise any eyebrows surely.Your sil sounds a bit of a pratt.

If he is say 6 months old, then your sil is very unreasonable.

If he is say 15 years old, and (for example) did it right in her face/next to her and then laughed or wafted it towards her and didn't even say excuse me when he realised how upset she was, then that (imo) is slightly different,

because farting is natural yes, but it's actually not a great thing to do in an enclosed space full of people

If your son is old enough to know when he needs to fart, he should be taught that he should pop to the loo, or at least out of the room, if he is around lots of people.

It's just polite to avoid gassing friends and family.

I once told dd1 (age 5) quite firmly to apologise as she let one out whilst sitting on mil's lap.

(mil is very prim and proper). dd1 was most put out as it was grandma and not her! To be fair to mil she did admit to it.

there's a joke about an old duchess plagued with excess flatulence who embarassed herself by passing wind in front of her guests. To try to redeem the situation she frowned at her butler and said

"stop that Smithers!"

"Certainly Madam, which way did it go?"

Thanks all. Ds is 10 and did it quite near to her but in a large room. He probably thought nothing of it as we are quite easy going about bodily functions. He has sn and is having emotional issues at the moment which sil is aware of so did not need lots of drama and shouting going on.

If sil is aware of his sn she was out of order. Would it have been possible for your son to say "excuse me" (don't mean to be inflammatory, just asking)

If not, and sil was determined to over react, then I personally would have left the room (with dh and ds) before she and your fil chose to become so overwrought.

I did actually leave my pils on one occasion. Not related to farting, but fil had a violent temper tantrum ranting and screaming at the dcs because they bumped into a small table and spilt a few drops of water.

If we had stayed in the room he would have ranted for a very long time I think.

Agree that if she was aware of the SN, she should have said nothing. Yes, it is rather ill mannered to fart in company, if one can reasonably be expected to control it. But it is equally ill mannered to comment on it and then create a row about it. Quite uncivilised IMO.

I don;t understand how these people can have grown up together and ended up with different ideas about wind.

SIL is totally being a flatulent pain in the arse though.
