for making a quip about seeing me in there every day and beginning to think i was a member of staff and how i must have loads of spare time on my hands.

I'm not in there every day. i pop in when passing for essentials, the occasional paper or wine on my way somewhere else, usually in a tearing hurry, perhaps 4 times a week maximum.

I don't work there. the uniform wouldn't suit me.

Spare time? what's that. I work very long hours, i study, i work extras to pay the sodding bills.

Daft cow.

Are you always so unpleasant?

catinthehat2 · 04/03/2010 22:29

Can I make you feel really bad about WAitrose checkout ladies?

Had a MC, went out to get shopping WAY too early, wept at till.

Waitrose lady shut till, took my shopping to car , parcelled me up in car, was a complete & utter human being. I have a long memory for that sort of behaviour.

So, she was probably being nice!

2old4thislark · 04/03/2010 22:31

My DS works in Waitrose. They teach them that customer service is EVERTHING! I love that they go out of their way to be polite, make small talk and actually take you to find the things you're looking for!

Having said that he'd rather stack shelves and do the home shopping than do the check outs.......I wonder why?????

YABU - think you're overeacting or is this a wind up?

EccentricaGallumbits · 04/03/2010 22:31

i'm only deeply unpleasant when over tired, over busy and over stressed.

most of the rest of the time i'm only low-level unpleasant. which is just about bearable.

derrymac · 04/03/2010 22:32

No idea why you're taking such offence - yes, she may be a silly old moo, but probably just trying to be friendly and not a natural at it or perhaps she mistook you for someone else - quite likely if you really only pop in for a paper or wine.

I'd have to go back and say 'are you sure you meant me?' I'd just have to know why she'd said it if it wasn't true??!

My DH works for another supermarket and all the till staff have to greet you and ask how you are and I love it cos the rival supermarket I used to go to was so bad at customer service I used to be infuriated every time I shopped.

catinthehat2 · 04/03/2010 22:32

sounds reasonable to me

2shoes · 04/03/2010 22:34

My cousin is a Waitrose checkout lady... slap her and I'm coming for you!

sevenkeystomysoul · 04/03/2010 22:36

YANBU, you are being a bitch. People who work in shops have just the same stress/child/life issues as you do. Attempting a little human interaction is not a crime. Oh, a don't shop in the Co-op as I fear I would be forced to give you an ethical, fairtrade kick up the mimsy if you were that rude to me.

NeedsWillWhenBarrattBuilds · 04/03/2010 22:39

You are clearly far too common to shop at Waitrose, and seriously out of your depth. I suggest you move much further down the food chain and try to work your way up.

Iceland might be a good place to start.

I think you should head for 'Happy Shopper'
Might cheer you up

bran · 04/03/2010 22:40

One of the weekday only ladies in Waitrose remembers DD's name (which is more than some of my relatives can do), asks after DS during term time and is thrilled to see him during holiday time. This could either be because I have the world's most adorable and fascinating children or because she's being nice. (Obviously the former.)

hf128219 · 04/03/2010 22:42

Do you wrap the wine up in the paper?

EccentricaGallumbits · 04/03/2010 22:43

yes. i admit it. i am an unhinged, common, busy, unpleasant, and perhaps a litttle unreasonablebitch.

but i don't like small talk.

jasmeeen · 04/03/2010 22:43

In the dim and distant past I worked on the check out at a major supermarket and it really is a boring job. So yes, you do try to make conversation with customers just to make the day go faster. And yes, you do recognise regular customers and the kind of shop they do and would notice if they bought something unusual for them. And you might even mention it to make conversation. A bit of chit chat makes for a more pleasant day.

So YABU - cut the till lady some slack. She doesn't really care that you are in there 4 days a week.

JustAnotherManicMummy · 04/03/2010 22:46

I agree with Bran.

jenduff · 04/03/2010 22:47

they are just being nice.

My mum friends and I clearly do have too much spare time on our hands and so the ladies in our waitrose coffee shop know our orders / who we're with etc and bring our order over to our table even if we haven't actually finished storing up trolleys / getting high chairs etc - does that make you feel better?

JustAnotherManicMummy · 04/03/2010 22:48

DH has to practically high-five and embrace everyone in our local Waitrose.

So could be worse

bran · 04/03/2010 22:50

Your OP gave me a feeling of nostalgia for the time I lived in Berlin. I don't know why as Waitrose is so incredibly pleasant whereas the open hostility of checkout workers in Berlin has to be experienced to be believed. You don't imagine they are sneering at you there.

MadameDefarge · 04/03/2010 22:52

Yes, YABU. Have you ever worked on a checkout? Do you know how much shit those people take on an hourly basis? And you have the selfishness to get pissed off because she actually noticed you?

ffs.

Spoilt. Stupid. Selfish.

Slartybartfast · 04/03/2010 22:53

talking aobut slapping, i was wondering, just in a reverie you know, during ds' parents evenign tonight, what would happen if i slapped one of his boring teachers
it woke me up anyway.
