parenting pet peeves...

I know I'm going to get flamed for this but I just don't care - I have to vent somewhere after a weekend of smiling and nodding and keeping my mouth shut!

Here is a list of 'parenting' traits that I absolutely hate!

Giving babies sugar - dessert/pudding/biscuits/cake - they do not need it - they are not missing anything and they are the reason that your child is already overweight!

Shovelling food into tiny babies, scooping it up and shoving it back in when the baby's tongue pushes it out while discussing the baby's excema, constipation, tummy upsets etc

Giving toddlers fizzy drinks such as Coke and letting them run madly around before screaming at them and complaining about how badly behaved they are.

Giving children calpol because it's been a 'long day' or because they have a slight sniffle or even a hint of a temperature or just because 'they like the taste'!.

controlled crying / cry it out - I hate this at any stage but I DESPISE it in children under 6 months. I don't care if your child has been sleeping through since 5 weeks - it is bloody cruel!

and breathe....

Ok feel free to flame me or alternatively add your own pet peeves!

Disclaimer : I by no means consider myself to be a perfect parent and I could fill several threads with my own parenting flaws.

long over explained dialogues with children, when no/yes/stop/put it down would suffice eg "oh eh um like yah maximus puhleese like put that boy down.we dont remonstrate and dont like hitting.um no we like to listen and talk and explore our feelings"AGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHH shut the fuck up you goon

quacky parents who feed maximus all shite vitamins and supplements and drag him off to "fee-therapist" at any whim

competitive parents droning on about mandarin classes, cello and yoga at 2yoft

anyone who uses the expression cloth bumed

thinking products define you or add heroic qualities.it is only a fucking sling doesnt make you earth mother.get over it

chirruping on about baby lead weaning and no sugar here please

I don't wear lipstick or make up but it's not because I don't have the time, it's because I don't want to. I am quite comfortable and well-presented in my own skin.

  1. I second the sugary food thing...but only if you do not brush your kids teeth everyday. My DA is constantly feeding her kids (my cousins) crap! the lil girl is obese and shes 4yrs old, she has 4 rotten teeth that have never grown through properly and are black! Yet when she actually took her to the dentist once about 2 yrs ago...dentist said to stop feeding them lollies etc...and she turned round and said 'how do you expect me to do that? you cant stop giving children sweets'. It begs to differ
  1. Pregnant 'mums' and 'mums' who say ' why would you wanna breastfeed, its disgusting' and my DU who said 'why you wanna have a baby suck on your tit?' I feel like a punch coming!
  1. Mums who think that they will only survive labor with an epidural (starts to dig hole)
  1. Parents that smoke (dig's deeper) I just find it very selfish
  1. minxo ditto to the mums and the soft play... they sit there while their child is causing havoc and think its ok to ignore it...and this one... I was at fanatics the other day (soft play, very large, £4 quid in) and my dd who just turned 2yrs, was in a section of the soft play designed just for toddlers and she was playing with a push along toy, which was meant to stay in that part of play area or dangerous to other kids...anyway so dd wanted to get out that part of the play area - I was watching her, but I wanted to learn to do it herself and this young mum (im 22) so shes either the same age or younger and with two dd's... picked my dd up, looked at me and carried her with the push along toy - OUT of the toddler play area and put her into the main part where parents sit!!!! I was gobsmacked! I just couldnt believe she could be so irrisponsible, If i wasnt watching my dd, and not wanting to do things by herself, and was another mum, my dd could have escaped out the front door!!! arghhhh
  1. Dummies used past 2 yrs old - should really be past 18 months but my DD was in car accident and she used it for comfort for a couple months and finally got rid when she was 22 months.
  1. 4yr olds in pushchairs!
  1. parents who drive thier cars with kids not in carseats and babies on mums laps!
  1. women who say dads shouldnt potty train children
  1. mums who blame their child's bad behaviour on ADHD..(with exception to those medically diagnosed)

birth bores who think any analgesia is a failure.oft heard muttering why cant these women chant an incantation and breathe really deeply like the madeuppicus tribe

QueenofDreams · 23/02/2010 19:21

Don't have a problem with sugar in moderation.

The hovering parents get my goat, but then I'm a lazy relaxed mum.

I unfortunately have met people who do cry it out under six months. At my post-natal group (babies about 8 weeks old) one woman said her way of getting her DS to sleep was to leave him screaming. And my sister did controlled crying at 6 weeks.

Oooh overprecious parents who constantly drone on about what a budding einstein their DARLING is. He only beats up kids at nursery because he's so much more intelligent than they are. Really...

bergentulip · 23/02/2010 19:27

lequeen, maybe I am just naturally radiant and gorgeous and I have enough self-possession to venture out of the house with a neat pony tail and no makeup on....??!! What a strange point. Or ill-put.

Were you meaning tracksuit-bottomed, slipper-wearing types? Or seriously, you have a problem with someone who does not 'do' their hair and wear a load of makeup?

sungirltan · 23/02/2010 19:28

widow - oooh vaccination dodgers....don't get me started - its a social responsibilty!!

scottishmummy · 23/02/2010 19:28

going out in PJ's.put some clothes on you lazy boot

AshleyFanjo · 23/02/2010 19:29

"Parents who smugly only allow their children to drink milk/water. Usually the same parents who allow their own children to smack them in temper, and who are incapable of getting their children to bed much before 10.00pm (my DDs often drink squah, but are beautifully behaved and go to bed at 7.00pm on the dot)."

What a totally illogical and unpleasant generalisation.

I only allow my DS to drink water and milk. He loves them both so much so why would I introduce another drink that will rot his drink?

At 18mths he is going through a smacking phase which most children go through - I deal with it appropriately and certainly do not allow it. Apart from this he too is beautifully behaved. Once again I think you implying that squash is a magical elixir that improves child behaviour is, well, ridiculous and illogical.

As I didn't like the tone of your post I am going to be smug about the fact the same DS has slept through the night 7-7 from 5mths old - no controlled crying needed.

warthog · 23/02/2010 19:29

See I knew I must be getting something horribly wrong. I mean it couldnt just mean giving your baby a carrot could it? That would be too common for a special name and everything.
