farting in front of DH?

MrsSawdust · 17/02/2010 20:35

We have been together for 18 years, married for 14 years and have a 1 yr old DD.

My DH is becoming increasingly upset about me letting off wind when he is anywhere in the vicinity. I'm pretty certain this never used to bother him - or at least he didn't tell me if it did.

The thing is, he thinks it's ok for him to fart in front of me anytime he feels like it. He's quite adamant that 'the rest of society' thinks it's ok for a man to fart in front of a woman but not ok for a woman to fart in front of her man. He's so certain of this fact, he actually ASKED me to post this on MN to prove me wrong.

I've told him to get over it.

AIBU? I'm genuinely starting to doubt myself here.

He's a prat. "the rest of society" will agree with me.

mrsboogie · 17/02/2010 20:40

yup, he is an eejit.

EccentricaGallumbits · 17/02/2010 20:40

He's talking bollocks.

it's not polite to break wind in public or in front of company; but at home, with your family? I think it is perhaps OK.

diedandgonetodevon · 17/02/2010 20:40

I kind of agree. I would die of embarrasment if I farted in front of DH. But then in 6 years together, I have never heard him fart either.

[would like to add that we are not as repressed as this sounds ]

pranma · 17/02/2010 20:40

YANBU at all.OH and I are very comfortable about such matters and both fart as and when it is necessary. It is ridiculous to say there are separate 'rules' for men and women.
As my OH says 'the family that fart together stay together'.

notanumber · 17/02/2010 20:41

Are you farting more than usual? Are they unusualy smelly?

Otherwise, I have no idea why he should suddenly develop such barking ideas after eighteen years of coupledom.

morethanyoubargainfor · 17/02/2010 20:41

i agree with fluufy!

What has life come to when you can't drop one in front of your DH! Thats probably one of my least digusting habits i do in front of my DH

Buddleja · 17/02/2010 20:42

rest of society nodding in agreement with Fluffyone

Honestly? He honestly thinks this? Fart on his head and then he'll think you just farting in the same room as him the better option

SilveryMoon · 17/02/2010 20:42

I don't fart infront of my dp

Hassled · 17/02/2010 20:42

What he says was possibly true when Victoria was on the throne, but men lost the right to complain about women farting, while farting themselves, when we lost the Empire. Or something. He's a moron.

pranma · 17/02/2010 20:42

By the way this only applies at home of course, never with anyone outside immediate family.

Fluffyone · 17/02/2010 20:42

If it wasn't we'd all explode.
I hope he's not one of those blokes who thinks it's OK to let rip with a fart or break wind regularly, and then laugh at himself. My BIL will do this even when we're visiting for a meal, he's disgusting.

Fleegle · 17/02/2010 20:42

YANBU

Which finishing school did your DH attend- he has been misinformed

MrsSawdust · 17/02/2010 20:43

SilveryMoon, does he fart in front of you?

OP posts:
SilveryMoon · 17/02/2010 20:44

No. I've only ever heard him if I've walked into the bathroom in the morning when he's having a wee.
Are we weirdo's?

tethersend · 17/02/2010 20:46

Did he see you give birth?

Despite my warnings, DP wandered down to the 'other end' whilst our DD was being born by cs. He has seen parts of me I never have, nor will.

To be honest, farting lightened the mood after that.

weegiemum · 17/02/2010 20:47

My ds once told his Grannie (MIL) with pride

"mummy is just as good at farting as daddy!"

Your dh is out of touch with "society".

If you don't fart in front of your dh, do you get up and leave the room if you need to drop one say when you are watching tv?

AnyFucker · 17/02/2010 20:49

what does he do if some wind escapes while you are having sex ?

MrsSawdust · 17/02/2010 20:50

SilveryMoon don't think you're weirdos, but judging from the responses so far, you are a little unusual in that respect

I always thought we were one of those couples who were comfortable enough in each others company not to care about this. I'm kind of upset to discover that I was wrong. I'm sure he used to laugh at my farts! What went wrong?

I like the 'Families that fart together stay together' quote

mistletoekisses · 17/02/2010 20:50

I used to be a little of this view...then i fell pregnant....dunno about everyone else, but if DH had insisted on my leaving the room to fart, he wouldnt have seen me the whole pregnancy! So now, it is perfectly natural for us....

YANBU.

tethersend · 17/02/2010 20:50

How can you live without asking him to pull your finger?

mankyscotslass · 17/02/2010 20:53

My Dh would struggle if he felt like that.

After a 3rd degree tear and confirmed nerve/muscle damage I really have no control over my farts.

Dh is constantly amazed by the range of my farting ability.

I think he is just jealous.

PandaEis · 17/02/2010 20:53

my DH teases me about my parps but doesnt like it if i tease him about his. we do it in front of eachother as how much more is there to accept about the person you love and live with once they have seen a human-being hurtling out of your fanjo? i make him worse by saying 'better out than in' afterwards to wind him up...maybe try that

also what about when you are asleep?? are you not allowed to fart then either?? you would be mighty uncomfortable sleeping with your arse hanging out of the window

slightlystressed · 17/02/2010 20:54

YANBU - he's being ridiculous!

Its bloody painful to try and keep farts in.

LadyGaggia · 17/02/2010 20:55

My DH is getting more and more bothered by things like this.

We have been together 16yrs and in the last few years he has moaned about farting and even saying the word "poo".

He let one rip at the breakfast table this morning which really annoyed me, because if any of us had done it he would have pulled a face and complained about having to hear it whilst he is eating.
