to think finding two dead blackbirds might be a bad omen?

I think I probably am being silly and superstitious but when I went out to my car this morning there were two dead blackbirds (one male one female) on the drive - not obviously mauled by a cat. Please tell me IABU and that it isn't a portent of bad luck or whatever

If you're a blackbird it's a very bad omen as there's obviously a feline serial killer on the loose. If you're not then you'll be fine.

Cyb · 16/02/2010 13:46

We found a dead blackbird squewered onto dh's car aeriel once- and we lived to tell the tale!

tallulahbelly · 16/02/2010 14:02

Cyb - that's a good idea. So many people use that ping pong ball trick now you can never work out which car is yours.

Cyb · 16/02/2010 14:02

lol

fotheringhay · 16/02/2010 14:07

Yes, bad omen. Not nearly enough to bake into a pie.

mydoorisalwaysopen · 16/02/2010 17:41

good - just being stupid then.

cornsilk · 16/02/2010 17:42

were they babies?

mydoorisalwaysopen · 16/02/2010 17:44

no - adults. Babies I would have understood albeit the wrong time of year - we've had baby birds dropped in the garden before - by birds of prey I expect.

No dead blackbirds not an omen, but apparently it's unlucky to have a bird fly into your house. So let's hope your posting name isn't literal.

cornsilk · 16/02/2010 17:51

adult blackbirds are really bad parents and push their babies out of the nests apparently. Perhaps the babies decided it was payback time.

pjmama · 16/02/2010 17:52

I once stepped out of my front door and a dead pheasant landed on the ground right next to me, with a thump and a cloud of feathers! Poor thing had obviously expired in mid flight, missed me by a foot.

taffetacat · 16/02/2010 17:54

We have a local sparrowhawk kills lots of blackbirds in our garden. But there is normally a feathery mess everywhere with them.

Its not one of those lateral thinking puzzles is it where they are called Romeo and Juliet and are pieces on a Monopoly board?

cocolepew · 16/02/2010 17:56

How did you know they were male and female? Was one wearing a dress.

pjmama · 16/02/2010 17:58

Female blackbirds aren't black, they're brown.

taffetacat · 16/02/2010 17:59

............and males have orange beaks where the laydee has a yellow one

fishie · 16/02/2010 18:00

i had a cat leave dead blackbird in my handbag once, i found it in the queue in the bank.

taffetacat · 16/02/2010 18:03

@ fishie

did you pay it in?

cocolepew · 16/02/2010 18:03

oohhh [impressed]

KurriKurri · 16/02/2010 18:08

Lol - I've got a vision of fishie taking a dead blackbird out of her bag in the bank, looking at it with mild curiosity and nonchalantly putting it back.

taffetacat · 16/02/2010 18:10

pmsl

like a scene from a David Lynch film

PeedOffWithNits · 16/02/2010 20:41

might be worth asking the neighbours if they have been using any rodent poison, and ask them to keep it better covered up if so

WickedWench · 16/02/2010 20:48

Well it depends if the cat that killed them was black and came from the left or the right.

I wouldn't worry, but then again I own a jet black cat who frequently tries to kill me by tripping me up on the stairs - which is probably considered lucky somewhere in the world.

GrimmaTheNome · 16/02/2010 20:53

Possibly someone has put out something for the birds that's gone off. If it was smaller birds I'd suspect an infected birdtable but blackbirds are usually ground feeders.

I was once staying at a large country house in scotland and a pheasant flew in through in through the (unopened) window. So a couple of days later, brace of birds one with the usual shot to pick out, the other with glass shards.

fishie · 16/02/2010 20:54

i pretended it wasn't there, went about my banking.

then rushed out to high street and disinterred it into nearest litter bin.
