Is DD right about muslims being forbidden to keep dogs as pets?

She came home from school saying that Islam forbids it's followers to keep dogs as pets or companions, unless they are kept for a purpose, such as hunting or guarding. Is this right? Thanks in advance

I have no idea but I'm interested to know the answer/reasoning.

BitOfFun · 13/02/2010 18:03

Yes.

SilveryMoon · 13/02/2010 18:04

I heard something along the lines of them not keeping pets that cleaned themselves iyswim, but think that must be a load of bull, but def think there's something in the forbidden thing.

MummikinsOopNorth · 13/02/2010 18:05

Thank you bit of fun, such a speedy answer! Why is this? (Can't imagine going a day without snuggling little pooch!)

Seen as unclean, I think.

beeny · 13/02/2010 18:07

I am a muslim and sister is a lecturer at uni in Islam. It is a more a case of dog saliva would be considered unclean before praying you could have a dog in the house but areas would need to be restricted.

CheerfulYank · 13/02/2010 18:08

Why? Not a judgmental "why", mind you, just a curious one. I'm with you, mummikins, can't imagine life w/o the big, shaggy mutts that have populated it!

CheerfulYank · 13/02/2010 18:09

Oh, I see beeny.

MummikinsOopNorth · 13/02/2010 18:09

She also said that pride is forbidden. I asked her "So when you do well at school and I tell you I am proud of you and brag to aunty and grandma, in Islam it's wrong?" and she said yes, it is wrong. Surely she's got the wrong end of the stick there?

It's probably like pride in Christianity, when it makes you feel that you're a better person than others or something.

Missus84 · 13/02/2010 18:12

Well, Christians consider pride a sin as well don't they?

beeny · 13/02/2010 18:13

Exactly.

BitOfFun · 13/02/2010 18:13

My dog is definitely unclean.

MummikinsOopNorth · 13/02/2010 18:13

I am fascinated by Islam, as much as DD is right now. The Muslim way of slaughtering meat seems much kinder than non-Halal ways, so i've told her we can go into the part of town which has Halal butchers and choose our meat from there. I think it also has a mosque there. Are only Muslims allowed in a Mosque? I would love to take her in one to have a look.

Oh, so the pride thing is thinking that because one has the latest pair of Nike trainers and an expensive coat, or a large house, it is forbidden to show pride in those material things , rather than to be proud of achieving children for eg?

Half DP's muslim relatives keep dogs as pets. They live outside but that's a normal hygeine thing and observed by people of all religions in their country. (hindu, Christian, etc)

beeny · 13/02/2010 18:17

Non muslims are allowed in mosques you just need to be modestly dressed and covered up.The more i talk to my sister about Islam who is very well read the more i realise that Islam is not about wearing hijaabs(she doesnt) or conforming but about trying to have a connection to God at all times.

victoriascrumptious · 13/02/2010 18:17

Dogs are haram which means forbidden (I think). Dogs are considered unclean.

I once read in a book of facts that if a muslin person touches a dog they have to wash 7 times so i suppose owning a Dog would be impractical.

That is excellent, thank you Beeny. I think that we may have to wear headscarves in the Mosque? I would love for DD to have an interest in religions, especially Islam and Hinduism, if only to avoid the racist ignorance my parents and older generations show.

Mummikins, you mght want to ask the imam to gve you a tour of the mosque, it'll just be big empty carpetted rooms with possibly bookcases along one side with books in Arabic.

The imam will be able to explain the place better to you.

Also if you ask you won't walk in on a congregational prayer. We don't speak whilst engaged in compulsory prayer nor is anyone supposed to pass in front of the person praying till the prayer is over.

It'll be less confusing & hopefully an imam will be able to asnwer your questions too.

Word of warning you may need to remove your shoes in a mosque. I know a lot of people are offended by this.
