Is DD right about muslims being forbidden to keep dogs as pets?

She came home from school saying that Islam forbids it's followers to keep dogs as pets or companions, unless they are kept for a purpose, such as hunting or guarding. Is this right? Thanks in advance

Couldn’t do without my dog but pride is considered a sin in other religions too. Not just pride in material things but any pride is my understanding (I think it’s because it’s too close to being boastful). Can cause problems.

@BitOfFun

My dog is definitely unclean.

Muslim household here and sharing it happily with our wonderful little dog who we adopted from her Muslim homeland after being abandoned onto the streets and treated like dirt.

I am fascinated by Islam, as much as DD is right now. The Muslim way of slaughtering meat seems much kinder than non-Halal ways, so i've told her we can go into the part of town which has Halal butchers and choose our meat from there. I think it also has a mosque there. Are only Muslims allowed in a Mosque? I would love to take her in one to have a look.
OP I suggest you research halal meat and how the animals are killed. Killed without being stunned, by a knife slice to the jugular vein, then the bodies drained of blood. RSPCA say that it can cause unnecessary pain and suffering to the animal. I have no axe to grind on this either way, but make sure you get your facts right before passing on to your child . It's great that you are interested in learning about other cultures fascinating stuff

OP's child is probably an adult now to have asked the question over 10.5 years ago.

It's more informative than the usual zombies though and makes a change from fitting a carpet Grin

I would have thought washing carefully once after touching your dog would do it, not seven times? Bonkers!

Are you being serious??
The UK Farm Animal Welfare Council says that the method by which kosher and halal meat is produced causes severe suffering to animals and it should be banned immediately. According to FAWC it can take up to two minutes for cattle to bleed to death, thus amounting to animal abuse.

What on earth possessed you to resurrect this thread?

And how on earth did you find it?

saraclara · 17/11/2020 00:31

@buildingbridge

You could have easily googled this Hmm. Yes, Muslims are forbidden to keep dogs as pets
I'm glad she didn't. This has been an interesting thread.

Also if everyone googled their questions there'd be no need for Mumsnet to exist.

Hall slaughter is kind? Is that some kind of sick joke? Unstunned religious slaughter is barbaric beyond words, all so the animal can hear a prayer to a non existent god; give me strengthHmm. Unstunned Religious slaughter needs to be banned entirely.
safariboot · 17/11/2020 15:32

Islam is as varied as Christianity. Different branches have different views on this and many other matters. Saudi Arabia endorses quite a conservative and fundamentalist school and has the money to promote this worldwide.

safariboot · 17/11/2020 15:32

And I can't read dates. Talk about a zombie thread. Oops.

mamamia2020 · 17/11/2020 15:36

I live in a Muslim country, my husband is Muslim and we have a dog in the house. He isn't allowed in areas where he prays and if he has washed to pray then he wouldn't stroke him. But aside from that he strokes him all the time and wouldn't keep washing.

We live next door to a mosque and Fridays are really festive. Every week they make rice with milk and nuts and golden raisins to hand out to everyone. I now associate Fridays with Rice pudding and will miss it when I return to the UK in a couple of weeks.

I've been to lots of mosques and have always covered my arms and hair. I've always been greeted with genuine warmth and people are always happy to talk about their religion if you are interested. In our home, we celebrate Ramadan, Eid, Easter and Christmas and it's lovely.

I've been married to a Muslim for almost 20 years. I have the most wonderful inlaws who have only ever treated me with kindness. Blooming love my loud, noisy, slightly bonkers Muslim family. It makes me really sad when so many people think Muslim = easily offended religious nuts. Really upsetting.

CSIblonde · 17/11/2020 15:43

I know plenty of Muslims who drink & have cats,dogs & other pets that aren't for guarding. I also know quite a few who don't go to the Mosque & don't have a faith at all, mostly under 45. A much younger than me Muslim friend said "the problem is, we send the dumb ones to the Mosque to keep them out of trouble: & look what happens ". I'm not entirely sure if he was joking . It seemed a bit insensitive to pursue the subject.

RanyaHere333 · 17/11/2020 16:56

Idk lol

TheSmallClangerWhistlesAgain · 17/11/2020 17:10

Attitudes to dogs vary between Muslim traditions, families and individuals. On the whole, Muslim folk are less likely to keep dogs as pets and are more likely to be scared of them, but it's down to personal choice and interpretation of scripture. I met a woman in Turkey once who told me that her fluffy spaniel lap dog (that barked like a loony) wasn't allowed on the people's beds, and that this meant he was within the rules.

Coincidentally, almost all the Jewish people I know have dogs, although that's a small sample of people and none of them are particularly religious.
