Is DD right about muslims being forbidden to keep dogs as pets?

She came home from school saying that Islam forbids it's followers to keep dogs as pets or companions, unless they are kept for a purpose, such as hunting or guarding. Is this right? Thanks in advance

Lol @ 'book of facts'. Why does that tickle me?

beeny · 13/02/2010 18:22

There is nothing in the Quran that says angels will not enter your house.

I think so, my Dad mentioned that once (he grew up in Iran).

Onestonetogo · 13/02/2010 18:31

haven't read the whole thread. I remember reading (dunno if it was in the Koran or the Hadith) that it's true, esp black dogs with a white spot, as they're considered satanic. Very silly imo, especially when people are basing their lives on such nonsense.
Thankfully several muslims I know do have dogs.

victoriascrumptious · 13/02/2010 18:32

Allah liked birds-he sent a shit load of them armed with hotrocks to kill someone who was waging war with elephants (apparently)

victoriascrumptious · 13/02/2010 18:39

Seems the prophet did especially like cats and people who fail to feed their cats or are unkind to cats get smited mightily.

?A woman entered Hell because of a cat which she tied up and did not feed, nor did she let it loose to feed upon the vermin of the earth.? (Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 3140; Muslim, 2242).

MummikinsOopNorth · 13/02/2010 18:42

Muezza (I think) was his cat.

The saliva of dogs is unclean. Dogs can be kept if they're kept for a purpose eg guard dogs, hunting, guide dogs etc.
One cannot pray if one has been licked by a dog unless one then has a bath first, one cannot pray on an area where a dog has salivated unless that area is first cleaned.
Dogs are to be treated well, just not kept in the home as pets of Muslim people.

There are levels of permissibility in Islam I don't think dogs are haram (not permissable), rather makhroo (disliked) as pets.
And Allah knows best.

Never heard the black dog evil thing, would need a chain of narration for that to comment.

Well Victoria, the prophet (pbuh), told a prostitute who gave water to a thirsty stray dog, her past was forgiven her & she would enter heaven for her actions.

illgetyoubutler · 13/02/2010 18:50

Beeny: On the authority of Ibn Abbaas (may Allah be pleased with them both), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:" The angels do not enter a house which has in it a dog, (nor the house which has in it) an image (soorah)" Reported by Al-Bukhaaree and Muslim. This (particular) wording is from Muslim[18]

Veggiemummy · 13/02/2010 18:57

I had a friend who went to Catholic school who was told by the nuns that large black dogs are satans demons on earth. How horrid is that to tell a child. I think some things are tagged in along the way in all religions.

beeny · 13/02/2010 19:01

I have spoken to my sister about this and again you have to still look at the Quran for you original source and there is no mention of this.

darkandstormy · 13/02/2010 19:05

My sudanese friend told me that if a dog licks her hand then she must rub her hands with sand.Although my Iraqui friend says that this is no to in Iraq, so perhaps more of a traditional variation according to which country.

I recently heard that a young blind boy has been given permission my his Iman to take his guide dog into his Mosque.

Muslims can be progressive too

darkandstormy · 13/02/2010 19:12

there are them on mumsnet who feel that poor staffies are the devil incarnate. I wonder which holy book some of these folk get their ideas from?

cissycharlton · 13/02/2010 19:12

Imam, not the woman David Bowie is married to.

Ask the Imam Verity.

fuzzywuzzy · 13/02/2010 19:32

Verity ask the imam if he'd give you & dd a tour. Islam has it's fair share of single mums too.

Irons · 13/02/2010 19:51

I noticed it was said that the reason dogs are forbidden is because they are "unclean". Funny that because I was just commenting to DH today that my DD (8 months old) plays with our 2 dogs every day and she has never been ill. 2 weeks ago I started taking her to soft play and she has now had her first cold. So who are the unclean ones I ask?
