Is DD right about muslims being forbidden to keep dogs as pets?

She came home from school saying that Islam forbids it's followers to keep dogs as pets or companions, unless they are kept for a purpose, such as hunting or guarding. Is this right? Thanks in advance

You can buy heated dog houses?

LOL, some people are crazy - but hey whatever floats your boat.

Bumbleconfusus · 16/02/2010 11:07

No i don't think you can buy heated dog houses, therefore, frozen-dead-dog is extremely likely. As I prefer mine with a pulse (as does my Muslim DH), they will remain in the house.

Morloth · 16/02/2010 11:13

As you are happy to have them inside it isn't a problem, if I had a dog it would have to be of a breed appropriate for the climate because it would have to live outside.

expatinscotland · 16/02/2010 11:21

Yes, but then it would have to be of the larger, hairier variety, Morloth, such as a husky or one of those Pyrenees creatures.

Yuk.

Morloth · 16/02/2010 11:29

How can you say yuck, just look at how cute he is.

It is funny, I quite like dogs and am sort of arguing the other side here. I just like dogs that are dogs and not some bizarre rat like creature that is treated as a human or worse an excellent great big dog that is then treated as a house pet, such a waste.

LetThereBeRock · 16/02/2010 12:33

My Tibetan Spaniel cleans herself as a cat does,but they are very cat like in general I'm not convinced she actually knows that she's a dog.

Oh, I'd rather walk for miles through the worst of Highland winter than ride in that car, Riven, I know what you mean!

It's so pungent, it makes my eyes water.

They of course have to walk the beasts, and as it is Scotland that means they often get wet and then they put them in the car as frequently take them to a park for walks, so the motor pongs of wet dog.

IMO there's little that smells worse than wet dog excepting dog shite and rotten meat.

What if you're a blind Muslim?

Haha funny cat owners thinking their cats smell of roses and dont lick their bums and dont jump on kitchen surfaces and dont leave cat hair all over the shop and dont have smelly shit that some unsuspecting gardener comes across while weeding the flower bed.

RanyaHere333 · 16/11/2020 22:16

No not really, Muslims tend to prefer cats over dogs because they’re said to be cleaner and if we have dogs we usually clean our hands after.

Leaannb · 16/11/2020 22:20

@MummikinsOopNorth

She also said that pride is forbidden. I asked her "So when you do well at school and I tell you I am proud of you and brag to aunty and grandma, in Islam it's wrong?" and she said yes, it is wrong. Surely she's got the wrong end of the stick there?
Bragging is not seen as Godly in Christianity either

Yes you can. People in Alaska do it everyday...365 days a year

RattleOfBars · 16/11/2020 22:24

Generally Muslims think of dogs as dirty creatures (dogs, like pigs, eat their own poo).
They shed hair, smell and are considered unhygienic to have indoors.

In most Islamic countries it’s rare to keep a dog in the house, they live under the house or in a kennel and serve a purpose (ratting, guarding, hunting).

Cleanliness of the home is a big part of Islamic culture. As are things like woven silk rugs, beautiful furnishings and clean floors, which aren’t easy to keep clean with an indoor dog.

Saying that I know a couple of Muslim people who own dogs and keep them in the house, but they’re confined to one room and the garden, and they’re little lap-dog types not big dogs.

@cissycharlton

I recently heard that a young blind boy has been given permission my his Iman to take his guide dog into his Mosque.

Muslims can be progressive too

Im not sure I count that as progressive, well, not enough to note it anyway. Of course a blind person should be allowed their aid into a Mosque, it goes without saying.

Much more progression is clearly needed in terms of rights for women, children, lessening societal pressure/hypocrisy etc.

buildingbridge · 16/11/2020 22:29

You could have easily googled this Hmm. Yes, Muslims are forbidden to keep dogs as pets

AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 16/11/2020 22:45

That's pretty accurate.

I'm a dog owner and live in a very diverse area with lots of Muslim neighbours. When I walk down the street with little DDog they'll give me a very wide berth (literally jumping out of the way on occasions) even though DDog is paying them no attention. When he's not with me, they'll pass me likw any other person. I've also never seen a visibly Muslim person walking a dog.

In the park, the pre-teen kids are often curious and want to engage with DDog (DDog doesn't give a shit and mainly wants to go off sniffing tbh) but I've used him on a few occasions to teach kids about how to approach a dog (eg ask first, let the dog come to you, expect that the dog will want to sniff you, don't grab).

In the same park I distinctly remember two lads in their late teens of Muslim appearance who saw DDog mooching around sniffing and showing absolutely no interest in them whatsoever. They simultaneously leapt on top of a bench in case DDog came close Hmm

There is, from what I can see, a lack of understanding about dogs, and by the time the kids become adults, curiosity often seems to have turned into fear or dislike.

TibetanTerrier · 16/11/2020 22:47

@illgetyoubutler

I call the street I live on Dog Shit Rally. I keep my DD in the pushchair til we reach the end of the road, as she isn't nimble enough to miss the dogs muck, then I weave the pushchair in, out and around the mess. It makes me livid, and im sick of it.
That's because your neighbours are disgusting, vile, lazy bastards, it's nothing to do with the dogs.
NotTodayMaybeTomorrow · 16/11/2020 22:57

@RanyaHere333 not sure why you’ve ‘resurrected’ two threads with similar topic.

@AvocadosBeforeMortgages where I live a lot of Muslims have dogs 🤷‍♀️ Probably kept as ‘burglar alarms’. I believe there is a differing opinion on the matter, so in some countries you’ll find dogs living alongside people with no issues (Turkey for instance).

In case anyone hasn’t noticed thread is 10 years old

Airyfairymarybeary · 16/11/2020 22:59

There is no kind way to kill animal! For halal cows are hung upside down while alive then get their throats slit so the blood drains out.
